Kibae··on Meta pitches EU to charge a $10 subscription for ad-free Facebook and Instagram
Return Youtube Dislike [0] isn't perfect, but it's good enough for my use cases.

Unhook [1] lets you hide the shorts tab from the sidebar, but unfortunately doesn't (yet) filter shorts.

Kibae··on YouTube using antipattern to force people enable history
The Unhook extension for Chrome [0] and Firefox [1] is a great way to keep yourself from falling into the YouTube blackhole.

Kibae··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Reddit relies on user-generated content so cutting the "unprofitable" users makes the product less useful for the "profitable" users.

This could lead to some initially profitable users into leaving the site and as a result make it less useful for the remaining users. This could lead to a negative spiral until Reddit is left with a fraction of its' user base.

Kibae··on Visual ChatGPT
I think it's largely due to Sam Altman bringing the YC ethos to OpenAI. Building something people want, releasing products quickly, etc.

Kibae··on Google announces ChatGPT rival Bard, with wider availability in ‘coming weeks’
I really hope ChatGPT doesn't go with the advertising revenue model. I think the paid model they announced ($20/month) is a good starting point, but there's going to be significant drop-off from the mass market it serves today if there is no free tier.

I'm hoping they're able to figure out a model where the paying customers can offset the costs for the free tier for simple queries, and that the paid model is able to do more complex computations (e.g. Input a 300-page book and condense it into a 2-page summary; or integrate a search engine in applications like Obsidian).

Kibae··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
One thing to keep in mind is that it uses a lot of memory on the default settings. I've configured mine to use ~200MB/hour.

My video resolution is 1792 × 1120 and I record at 10fps.

Kibae··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
One thing I've done to increase my productivity after reading a comment from a Hacker News post [1] is recording my work sessions on OBS.

The benefits for me are two-fold:

1) It keeps me accountable while working and

2) I can rewatch my work sessions and recall my thought process from a future me perspective.

It's amazing how much you forget about a day, but by watching the recordings after the fact, you recall the micro lessons you learned during your work sessions and you have the opportunity to encode these lessons into your long-term memory.

Kibae··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
I wonder what the cost to take down the balloon was for the US (including monitoring it) vs. the cost of the balloon for China. If the ratio is something greater than 10:1, then I would say China got a pretty good ROI on a small investment.
Kibae··on Ask HN: Books your kids like most
I remember I would stay up late reading those books. Each chapter ended on a cliffhanger similar to shows like Breaking Bad and I just had to keep reading to find out what happens next.
Kibae··on Ask HN: How can I check if a large number is prime?
Oh my goodness, you're right...
Kibae··on Japan skiers’ smartphones making unnecessary emergency calls
I assume it's all the emergency contacts
Kibae··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
I've been using ChatGPT to suggest me books similar to books I've liked and so far the results have been good. Many of the books that are recommended are books I've read and enjoyed so the remaining ones on the list are added to my reading list.
Kibae··on Amazon Ring cameras used in nationwide ‘swatting’ spree, US Justice Dept. says

Does this mean that Ring stores plaintext passwords?

Kibae··on iCloud for Windows downloading other people's photos
Why aren't photos and files encrypted in the cloud? I feel like it should be standard for cases like this.
Kibae··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
This reminds me of a story I heard about Steve Wozniak's time at HP: They were going to lay off 10% of the staff, but instead they decided to reduce everyone's pay by 10% and give them an extra day off every two weeks.
Kibae··on Update on Supply of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
It's an optimization problem. You want to minimize the number of deaths AND minimize the impact on the economy.

Let's say if you shut down the entire economy, you're able to save exactly 1 life. Is this a worthwhile tradeoff? Probably not.

Now the question becomes, where do we draw the line on the number of "acceptable" deaths and the acceptable impact on the economy.

Kibae··on Google Timer is gone (again)
The 1 and 5 minute timers show for me, but they appear after video recommendations. For my display, this is just under my viewport.
Kibae··on I fooled millions into thinking chocolate helps weight loss (2015)
I remember growing up in Canada, there were commercials about "house hippos" [1] and the first time I saw the commercial, I actually believed what was being presented.

Thinking back, I think the campaign actually worked on me because it made me realize how obviously fake things can be made to seem real if it's presented by a seemingly authoritative figure.

Kibae··on Kitsault, Canada’s $50M 1980s ghost town
Are you closely related to Brian Armstrong, creator of Coinbase, by any chance?
Kibae··on Trust in newspapers and television news collapses to historic low
Reuters is credible IMO.
Kibae··on Ask HN: Have you had success with improving your reading speed?
I recommend checking out the book "Train Your Brain for Success" by Roger Seip. There is a section in this book that teaches you to read faster while improving your reading comprehension.

> The idea of reading only 5 words in 8 repulses me.

One of the biggest concepts in the speed-reading section of the book is that a lot of people sub-vocalize the words in their heads. This limits your reading speed to around 150wpm. If you want to read 450+wpm, you have to be willing to "fill in the gaps" as you read.

Kibae··on Higher-income people are worried about the economy
I'm going to go against the grain here and say denuclearization is not the solution for peace. I believe the reason the world has been at (relative) peace since WWII is because of the threat of a nuclear war.

If Ukraine had kept their nuclear weapons, do you think Putin would even consider invading? I don't think so.

A better solution to denuclearization, in my opinion is to adopt a "No First Use" policy [1]. I suspect internally the US and NATO do follow this policy but will not disclose it publicly for strategic reasons.

[1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_first_use

Kibae··on Ask HN: What is the likelihood of nuclear war in 2022?
I think close to 0. In my opinion, space and cyber warfare will be the new norm for the foreseeable future.
