JulesRosser··on Gemini 3
Would you mind sharing the prompt please?
JulesRosser··on Steam Frame
Driving Sims, PavlovVR was a must play for a counterstrike shooter with great modding scene. Of course Skyrim VR, it's unplayable without mods but with voice recognition and QOL mods it's incredible,

For anyone like me who was struggling to manage work and personal Claude subscriptions, you can just use an alias like this:

alias claude-personal="CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR=~/.claude-personal claude"

JulesRosser··on Ask HN: Please provide your opinion on the state of React Native in 2023
> 95% of profitable customers have iPhones

Maybe in the US... This works for hobbyists or single devs, but clearly isn't realistic for most companies.

JulesRosser··on Ask HN: Please provide your opinion on the state of React Native in 2023
Agree with this. Coming from native Android there's a lot I miss, but being able to compile to Android, iOS, Desktop, Web & mWeb saves us an insane amount of time.

Thankfully we have the budget to work with expert maintainers and sponsor external libraries which allows us to reduce some of the pain.

JulesRosser··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
The US company I work for is remote first and we hire all around the world.

Not sure how helpful this is, but our method is that if we have a registered company in their country they will be hired as a typical employee. Anyone hired in a country we don't have a corporate presence in is hired as a contractor.

JulesRosser··on Banned Dogs
I hate to defend the government, but I don't think this policy is that Draconian. While sad, if an owner can't control their dog and it attacks someone then I think it's a reasonable reaction.
JulesRosser··on The Level Design Book gathers level design knowledge for 3D video games
Great resource! I found this site a couple of months ago when looking for help structuring levels.

Specifically, this page was useful: https://book.leveldesignbook.com/process/layout

For fun? To learn? Having an engaged audience of over 1/4M also helps.
JulesRosser··on Minecraft Wiki considers move away from Fandom to new platform
The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages is another great example. It looks the same as it did 10 years ago. Not sure how they are funded though.

JulesRosser··on Are the Americans Awake?
Legitimately useful. As someone working remotely I'm always wary of waking US colleagues up with my unimportant notifications.

I'd definitely use a '% of team members online' Slackbot

JulesRosser··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
Weird, I have never seen carrier bloat on any Google phone (Nexus5...Pixel6A). Is this because of EU legislation?
JulesRosser··on London Underground Dot Matrix Typeface
Love this. Would be a great addition to the 'model my local tube station' project that's probably going to remain on my to-do list for ever
JulesRosser··on Gitlab and remote work
I only see one recent applicant from Thailand, but we welcome applications regardless of where they live (with a few obvious exceptions). I don’t want to dox any colleagues by listing individual countries as we’re a relatively small company, but we have hired from 6/7 continents in the last 12 months (all except Antarctica).

Also happy to answer any other questions you have. And again, if anyone reading this is interested, please take a look at our open roles [0]. This is one of many, many things which makes the company great [1].

JulesRosser··on Gitlab and remote work
I agree some companies don't really mean it when they claim to be remote first, but at Expensify we truly are. Please apply if you like the sound of our open roles :)

JulesRosser··on Gitlab and remote work
Thanks for sharing this. That's correct, we are 100% remote first and you are not required to move to a city where we have offices. It's an optional perk.
JulesRosser··on Gitlab and remote work
We do at Expensify. A good % of our team works fully remote: https://we.are.expensify.com/benefits-perks

Also, check out remotewide.co for a list of remote companies with location independent pay. I think this is exactly what you're looking for.

JulesRosser··on Returning to the office is costing you untapped talent
That's what our company does and it's an incredible perk. All expense paid trips with planned events and child care. Even pets are welcome.
JulesRosser··on How BART on the Golden Gate Bridge died: A new history
There were plans for three circular motorways in central London. Thankfully people came to their senses and it was only partially completed.
JulesRosser··on The surreal experience of my first developer job
Same here, we must have been lucky. My early experience in agencies were fantastic.

It was only when I began contracting that I started to encounter scrappy companies, which made it a lot easier to deal with the dysfunction. We often had the perm benefits, a decent day rate, could clock out on the hour, and didn't have to take part in internal politics. Blissful in comparison to the perm roles.

JulesRosser··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
F: Emailed the company after seeing their post in a HN: Who's hiring thread
JulesRosser··on Robinhood is limiting purchases of stocks: AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, and GameStop
At least with the subscription they pay 3% on up to 4k cash, essentially covering the cost (assuming you have an emergency fund/cash available).
JulesRosser··on Startup Stock Options – Why A Good Deal Has Gone Bad (2019)
Would you mind sharing what could have been done to prevent the last minute PAYE shock? Was this something that could have been avoided, or an inevitably that you should have been made aware of sooner?

Also, as you mention a $USD, did you receive UK EMI options?

Thanks for sharing!

JulesRosser··on Why are British place names so hard to pronounce?
The map men / unfinished London series are great, Jay Foreman is a national treasure.
