IdontRememberIt··on How the airline industry got wise to seat belts
Yes. (International flights, before covid.)
IdontRememberIt··on How the airline industry got wise to seat belts
During my last flights, I always got 3 points seatbelts. Surprisingly, my 4yo was not allowed to buckle it during landing and takeoff.
IdontRememberIt··on The Sweden experiment: how no lockdowns led to mental health, healthier economy
This argument does not make sense.

1) +87% of the Swedish population live in urban area. (https://www.scb.se/en/finding-statistics/statistics-by-subje... )

2) Switzerland which is higher density has almost the same excess death rate (on your image)

3) France which had very strict and long lockdown (and killed/subsidized heavily its economy) has also almost the same figures.

As many have said, one of the major factor was how the elderly in home facilities had been protected and the state of the medical infrastructure (rate of intense care beds per capita to handle the peaks for exemple).

In the 70s and 80s, the Swedish medical infrastructure was one of the top. They still live on that legend. Please talk to Swedish friends around you and ask them how it is now (Part of my family is Swedish).

IdontRememberIt··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
Actually it was the historical excuse. But today with 3DS2, etc. the fraud/complains rates are very very small. (I have had zero in years.)
IdontRememberIt··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
CC processing business is hold by 2 American companies. When they warn you (through your CC acquirer), you have zero negotiation power. Comply or die.

You can use proxies if you are a small company. But at onlyFans' level, the solutions are limited.

PS: By experience, I can also confirm that most of the CC acquirers evaluate your business not on its legality but on its morality.

PS2: With mandatory 3DS2, the excuse of high fraud/complains rates (which were true 10 years ago) does not make sense anymore.

IdontRememberIt··on Getting a Covid jab is safer than taking aspirin
If she were 70, it would not be a conversation topic (she would have been vaccinated as the benefits would considerably outweigh the probability of risks short, medium and long term). But as she is young, there is a big question mark. And as it is not an exact science and nobody knows...
IdontRememberIt··on Getting a Covid jab is safer than taking aspirin
My wife has a "light" autoimmune condition. She is very sensitive to this topic. She was strongly recommended by several doctors to not be vaccinated. Not because of the short term possible effects but because of the unknown possible undocumented side effect which could be "triggered" in a distant future.
IdontRememberIt··on Will Work for Air-Conditioning
While travelling in some Asian countries, I discovered that in some areas students flood the classic Starbucks so they can study in controlled temperature environment (no for socializing).

As a European, I only understood late in my life how crucial was AC to boost the economical development of some countries like Singapore (among other things of course).

Where would many European countries be without heating?

IdontRememberIt··on [dead]
Richelieu said (sorry for my bad English): "Give me 6 lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I will find something to have him hanged."

We judge yesterday comments with todays' eyes. But todays compliant messages will be judged by tomorrows eyes.

Values and the fine line between morally good and bad are not static in time.

IdontRememberIt··on Why workers are calling BS on leaders about returning to the office
I wonder if returning to a more human/intimate offices size (vs open spaces) would not solve a big part of the frustrations about productivity. (Only because I remember my first offices +20 years ago).
IdontRememberIt··on Ask HN: What is the most bloated website you use
Tripadvisor beats them all: I have been using it since its beginning (amazing product and amazing competitive advantage over other travelers). Today, it is a hall of fame of all the direct marketing tricks, black hat seo technics, anti-patterns, external javascript from everywhere, etc. Also, its information is so diffused and played that it does not provide extraordinary advantage. Thanks to covid, I have not visited it this last 1.5 year.
IdontRememberIt··on Uber used 50 Dutch shell companies to dodge taxes on $6B in revenue
Agree. Unfortunately today a Foundation is mainly a optimisation structure. Most of the countries have usually other structures (in their fiscal code) to encourage people to help.
IdontRememberIt··on Uber used 50 Dutch shell companies to dodge taxes on $6B in revenue
It is a tool, you are right. But not the solution so it should not be so heavily encourage.

What should be encourage: a better distribution of the profits in the value production chain. At amazon, Wallmart, all the employees should be obscenely well paid (relatively to their job), the enormous profits should not be concentrated at the top.

IdontRememberIt··on Uber used 50 Dutch shell companies to dodge taxes on $6B in revenue
Forget it. Tax offices are chasing the big fishes so they have all the tools to catch and bother the small inexperienced ones. Also running these structure is actually very expensive and complex. Normal citizen have only 2 possibilities: cash economy or move to place fiscally more adapted to their needs (each country favor a type of fiscal profil).
IdontRememberIt··on Uber used 50 Dutch shell companies to dodge taxes on $6B in revenue
Buffett always complains that he did not pay enough tax. He could simply wire 50% of his fortune to the IRS. His secretary had no choice. (End of sarcasm)

They should donate to a foundation. They should not have link with it (direct or indirect). Their family (direct or indirect) should not have link with it (direct or indirect).

The problem with these structures is that they allow someone to control and directly benefit from assets without fiscally owning them. Usually these foundations have complex structures and use generous fiscal code of some countries.

For many, the main goal is to lower the fiscal pressure during transmission to the children.

IdontRememberIt··on Uber used 50 Dutch shell companies to dodge taxes on $6B in revenue
If IP and shell companies infuriate you. I invite you to investigate why all billionaires have foundations or its cousin structures and "give" their wealth to it... Clue: tax and inheritance (tax) avoidance. Bill, Buffett, etc. are hypocrites.

But it is not new, even in the Bible they spoke about it (Matthew 6:2): "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men."

IdontRememberIt··on Jeff Bezos comes out in support of increased corporate taxes
Let's simply say that for most foundations its only real purpose is to lower someone's tax bill and the most efficient way to transmit assets to one's kids. The name of this financial structure is so misleading. Honestly I find it fascinating from the PR/Marketing side.
IdontRememberIt··on Jeff Bezos comes out in support of increased corporate taxes
Many countries have exceptions to encourage entrepreneurship like the one you are mentioning.

Issues are borderline capital gain strategies to avoid revenue gain.

IdontRememberIt··on Jeff Bezos comes out in support of increased corporate taxes
Let's tax capital gain same as revenue and change the tax regulation for foundations (my wife is in this business and her blood is boiling with what she sees) and let's see how Bezos, Buffet, Gates, etc. will react...
IdontRememberIt··on Twitter's Dorsey auctions first ever tweet as digital memorabilia
Pump and dump friendly. Money laundry friendly. For sure this new scam will have powerful forces to drive its marketed attractivity to the roof.
IdontRememberIt··on Twitter's Dorsey auctions first ever tweet as digital memorabilia
If you are dealing with common goods, it is easy to detect if buy or sell prices are not standard. Also, IRS can detect easily if a company needs investigation when ratios do not match its industry.

With art, buy and sell prices have no comparison points and margins are very high.

IdontRememberIt··on The blockchain is one of the dumbest innovations of the tech industry
Central banks want to keep control on money. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-IZZxyb1GI) They will crush any entity who will threaten that.

Central banks are all working on CBDC (Central bank digital currency). The day they will be ready, I can suppose they will eliminate the threats.

IdontRememberIt··on Quad9 public DNS moves to Switzerland
Unfortunately. :(
IdontRememberIt··on Quad9 public DNS moves to Switzerland
We also though so. The General Prosecutors of several Cantons politely made us understood that we were wrong (in case of criminal offense). All our competitors provide the data without obstruction. We also now comply.
IdontRememberIt··on Quad9 public DNS moves to Switzerland
Historically, the data protection law (LPD) was more intended to protect the individual vs the State, than the individual vs private companies.

This was due to the Secret files Scandal in 1989 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_files_scandal ).

Regulators are now working on aligning the aging laws with the European GDPR to better protect individuals against private companies.

IdontRememberIt··on Quad9 public DNS moves to Switzerland
In Switzerland, a policeman investigating a criminal offense (délit penal), can simply request all the data about someone without the need of an explicit Juge order... How is it that great?
IdontRememberIt··on UK exports to EU slashed by 68% since Brexit
Comparing covid and pre-covid figures and being surprised is... surprising... Let's compare the figures in 10 years.

For Swiss people old like me, we still remember the exact same misleading articles when Switzerland said NO to Europe in 1992.

Switzerland had to adapt and is going fine today (minus covid). Hopefully UK will do the same.

IdontRememberIt··on Bitcoin Is a Ponzi
Ponzi Schemes can also be organized by the government and be mandatory...

Some pay-as-you-go (vs funded) pension systems are considered as Ponzi scheme by their characteristics. The population/age pyramid in western countries is an issue. Which is why the subject is hot.

IdontRememberIt··on Tim Cook Defends Parler App Suspension: ‘We Don’t Consider That Free Speech’
Will Tim Cook kick out Twitter because we can read daily homophobic, racist, hate, etc. messages on that app?
IdontRememberIt··on The Bitcoin Cryptocurrency Dream Is Dead
> Its now a money-making device... a financial instrument.

Even worse. It has been taken over by MLM moguls/scammers who migrated from classic MLM products/scams.

They now often pollute Real Estate, Stock Exchange, etc. forums trying to convert others (which is a red flag).

Which is sad because, like TOR, it was created as the right answer to a real problem but is being perverted/spoiled.

Sad...
