IdontRememberIt··on The Enigma of Peter Thiel
"John Ganz is a Stalinist, Marxist, Leninist, Trotskyist and Pol Potist. There’s really no better word for what he is. For some reason, people have a lot of trouble grasping this or just coming out and saying it."

"Where does John Ganz speak from?" (Also a famous Marxist strategy to disqualify the opponent.)

Does this open a debate or disqualify and vilify the author?

Why is attacking the person instead of his ideas getting the norm? Lake of arguments? Standardization of activism? Bolsheviks' tactics (Make them swallow the word, they will swallow the thing.)?

IdontRememberIt··on Ask HN: Why does WWDC get 10x more views than Google I/O?
The day Google will fix its killing product policy, I may invest time and money on them.
IdontRememberIt··on US Federal Reserve says its goal is ‘to get wages down’
> So, I do think it is good for wages to go up [...]

It can be. But too much it auto-fuels the inflation which is the feared scenario: inflation a-la-seventies.

IdontRememberIt··on US Federal Reserve says its goal is ‘to get wages down’
Have you read the minutes of the FOMC? Because I did and it made me a little pessimistic.

"We can't allow a wage price spiral to happen."

So if you have counter arguments, it would really brighten my day and allow me to see the future a little less dark. Thanks.

IdontRememberIt··on Ask HN: I did not get pay rise – as only person in team. Should I quit?
Jerome Powell announced an important factor for you during the last FOMC meeting: "We can't allow a wage price spiral to happen."

This means that the FED will certainly increase the unemployment rate and put pressure on companies. Why? Because they do not want a 70s type of inflation auto-fueled by wage increases which is actually already the case in the US but not in Europe.

During a time of layoffs, HR uses generally a LIFO (Last In First Out) list. => Changing job adds risk.

As several have noted: Work is not an individual sport (Forget the tv shows). You need allies. Working on your social skills will increase your income faster than changing job. And it will decrease your probabilities to be fire if (when?) a recession hits.

IdontRememberIt··on NLAW anti-tank launcher unboxing and instructions video
People are applauding that Western countries send these weapons but will cry when terrorists will buy them on the black market...

"God laughs at men who complain of the consequences while cherishing the causes." (Bossuet)

IdontRememberIt··on Ask HN: How much gas we could save in EU if we reduce our heating temp by 3°?
Not for everybody... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerhard_Schr%C3%B6der#Business...
IdontRememberIt··on Cutting Russia off from SWIFT a “matter of days” – euro zone central banker
I can only see a list of suffering people without expected outcome: North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, URSS, Cuba, etc.

(Genuine question to History geeks) Do we have an exemple of mass sanctions on a country that worked? Why are we repeating strategies that do not seem to work?

Theses sanctions seems to be designed to only short term please the people/voters/journalists of the sanctioning countries but are terrible to the sanctioned country/people long term without solving anything.

IdontRememberIt··on Cutting Russia off from SWIFT a “matter of days” – euro zone central banker
Why not punishing only the government: cancel all visas to the people working in the gov and especially their family. So no more rich gov kids in Western universities, etc.

I find a little unfair to punish people to push them in the streets and have them arrested, tortured or "administratively" punished (remember what happen after the Turkey coup in 2016? Military were punished but also many people working in the public sector.)

IdontRememberIt··on Stop Putin, Block Russia from Swift
On the contrary. If you cannot trust the people being informed properly in an efficient political system, it means that you have an issue somewhere.

Not trusting the people because we think that most are too dumb means that we praise a census suffrage or indirect form of it.

I am Swiss. I am often disappointed by vote results. The system is not perfect. But at least we decided.

IdontRememberIt··on Stop Putin, Block Russia from Swift
(Swiss speaking) What is important is that the vote/referendum process must be slow. Very slow.

We often see a trendy referendum being launched because of an event. Years later when we finally have to vote about it, we realize that it was only an historical parenthesis.

IdontRememberIt··on DSLRs are dead, and lenses are never going to be the same
Soft plastics on my nikon are an issue. I have noticed that they tend to deteriorate quickly on beach holidays. I suspect it is a combination of Sun, residues of solar cream on the hands and the salt in the air.
IdontRememberIt··on No one died in China of Covid since April 15th 2020
Now it is only politics because they are afraid of the Olympics exposure and to appear weak on TVs worldwide because they are not controlling covid.

Let's wait the end of the Beijing Olympic Games. I bet they will change their covid strategy and fully re-open for business because they need it.

IdontRememberIt··on Today’s Disneyland is a price gouge, not a magical experience
Actually, it is not the VIP package.

Disney replaced the free fastpass by a paying "Lightning Lane" pass: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/genie/lightning-lane/

The prices are adapting dynamically to trafic to maximize revenues.

IdontRememberIt··on Austria to declare nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people
In France, during the whole year 2020, people were told that the hospital infrastructure was overloaded because of COVID.

Actually, the final report shows that COVID patients represented 2% (!!!) of the total hospitalized... And only 5% (!?!?) of what they call "critical care"...

This report from the ATIH (Official agency) was published in october 2021.

The report: https://www.atih.sante.fr/sites/default/files/public/content...

IdontRememberIt··on Efficient Distance Querying in MySQL
With mysql 5.7, range searches on indexes (BETWEEN() or equivalent) are notoriously slow with large datasets.

We discovered that spacial index (flatten to 1 dimension) can be used to solve a common issue: ip range queries.

The query costs dropped and all the query metrics improved.

IdontRememberIt··on Jack Dorsey says ‘hyperinflation’ will happen soon in the U.S. and the world
My neighbor is Turkish (very good job). We often speak about inflation (because he recently came here and discovered almost zero inflation).

Sometimes he gives me examples of the consequences of high inflation in the little details of daily life. It is scary and frightening.

What people do not grasp is that high inflation kill all planification (even holidays, buy sometime "big" like a TV, meeting with friends, long term subscription, etc).

Because of it the reliability of business decreases as everbody is thinking short term and is acting at the last moment. How can you execute a big project if you do not know if the unpredictible inflation value will make it impossible or even kill your company? How do you handle an order if the customer cannot pay because the price went up? Or if the inflation eats all your margin, what do you do?

And of course I am not speaking about the negative impacts on the general mood, hopes, etc. on people.

IdontRememberIt··on Carbon-neutrality is a tale: the race for renewables is burning Europe's forests
I live in an area were most of the houses (+2 flats) use pellet (also in summer for hot water production). The air quality drastically dropped. It really "burns" the lungs some days.

I suspect that:

- combustion is not properly done most of the time and there is no need to have filters in the chimney.

- some pellets must not contain only "clean" wood

We are only waiting to move to a place with single familly houses because (in my area) they mainly migrate from petrol-gaz to solar energy (thermal) and heat pump (water-water).

IdontRememberIt··on It's weird that most of “Hacker” news is dominated by business news
Adding tags/topics has been a constant requested workaround to allow some filtering since almost the begining of HN.

Never understood the rejection.

PS: I have always read that it opens mind to other subjects. When I have enough time I agree, but when very busy I would favor some filtering to save precious time.

IdontRememberIt··on Cloudflare doesn’t have to cut off copyright-infringing websites, judge rules
For several month we have been facing continuous phishing attacks. The attackers are using cloudflare + Russian registrars + Russian hosting.

Can you guess who never cut the service (but other two react very quickly)?

IdontRememberIt··on California outlawed all-white-male boardrooms – reshaping corporate America
20 years ago, my IT friends and I were all enviously looking at California as a model to replicate. TC and Michael Arrington made us understand daily the opportunities we were missing.

Today, I honestly feel sad to see the decrepitude of this once beautiful lady we were in love with. She does not inspire me anymore. Sad.

IdontRememberIt··on Covid-19 overtakes 1918 Spanish flu as deadliest disease in American history
1) population in USA: 1918 103m vs 2020 331m

2) Spanish flu death distribution by age was totally different (mainly "young" people were dying) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3734171/

So if we considere the "years lost" (life expency minus age of death multiplied by the number of cases), the spanish flue was way more impacting.

IdontRememberIt··on Why does no one ever talk about Sweden anymore?
And compare with France which had one the strictest locked down policy, hard restrictions, covid pass, etc. https://ourworldindata.org/explorers/coronavirus-data-explor...

They have the same numbers...

Fun fact: Norway was one of the only country in Europe to have strict closed border. https://www.regjeringen.no/en/aktuelt/stricter-border-contro...

IdontRememberIt··on France recalls US and AU ambassadors over sub-deal
This is mainly due to internal reasons (Election day is in a few months). Macron wants to appear Jupiterian again. He changed its communication strategy since this summer. Last couple of months he even "replaced" his (Prime) Minister(s) in the media.

Also, an important factor has to be understood about the majority of people in France (Europe?): they hated Trump. When a Democrat was elected, they believed that they had a friend sharing their view on the world. Reality felt like a stab in the back.

Reality is that we have entered a new Cold War: China vs USA. Countries have to take a side.

For those interested about the *Thucydides Trap* (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thucydides_Trap) we are now seeing, I strongly advise this TED talk with Graham Allison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XewnyUJgyA4

IdontRememberIt··on Plans for a new city in the American desert
This is actually what Switzerland or Singapore do. Can the downvoters elaborate to enlight me why it is wrong? Thanks.
IdontRememberIt··on 'I made a mistake. NFTs are going to be much bigger than I anticipated.'
Would NFT make sense in trading of physical goods (wheat, cotton, oil, etc.) when there is a certification company (SGS, Bureau Veritas, etc)? NFTs (PDFs) could validate that the goods match the requirements? Or could NFTs be used in the land register?

(I am trying to understand NFTs outside obvious money laundering usecases....)

IdontRememberIt··on Plans for a new city in the American desert
The "fathers" of Dubai, Singapore, etc are highly respected and loved by the locals. Of course there are counter-exemples.
IdontRememberIt··on Plans for a new city in the American desert
A better bet, would be to have a strong government building and planning efficient infrastructure (transportation, utilities, ecology, etc) so that private initiatives make economical and competitive sense.
IdontRememberIt··on Plans for a new city in the American desert
These are not private initiatives. They were the will of powerful, bright and respected people.
IdontRememberIt··on Plans for a new city in the American desert
Eco-friendly in the desert and away from oceans... A sure way to have low fix and variable costs. Is this a remake of Ghost towns in China?
