Ialdaboth··on What happened to the first cryogenically frozen humans?
It's the reason why they switched from low-paid underlings to a little better paid caste of technocatric petty bourgeoisie for the XXIst century ;)
Ialdaboth··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential (2021)
Obsidian is great for syncing my notes across several devices. It was the major challenge I've struggled with for several years before it.
Ialdaboth··on New research suggests our brains use quantum computation
Thanks. I should find and read some good sources about this, it looks like a given to me.
Ialdaboth··on Copilot under fire as dev claims it emits 'large chunks of my copyrighted code'
Feels fallacious ? Most good developers I personally know, when doing code, tend to think about the problem at hand, establish the logic of how they want to solve it, and then implement the solution. They rarely try to do this by doing pattern-hunting & merge on a mountain of code from similar projects.
Ialdaboth··on AI will replace middle management before robots replace hourly workers
Humanity is shaped by its tools much more than the other way around.
Ialdaboth··on Copilot under fire as dev claims it emits 'large chunks of my copyrighted code'
Speaking about this, there is something I don't understand about AI-produced work : given how you need to train AI on an existing set of existing code (or artworks, or novels, or whatever), I don't even understand how it would be possible to patent/copyright the output as it is, to some remote degree, derivative by nature ? Humans don't need AIs to produce code, but the opposite is not true.
Ialdaboth··on New research suggests our brains use quantum computation
I'm more and more convinced this is... not exactly a false dichotomy per say, but at least a tricky one : you can have both free will at the micro level (any individual), and determinism at the macro level (any sufficiently large group of humans, considered in aggregate) at the same time.
Ialdaboth··on Intel and the $1.5T chip industry meltdown
I don't even really understand what "glory" is supposed to mean here; I'm more a believer in the cold, hard reality of geopolitical survival : you can't be a global superpower when your own seafront is literally at the mercy of an hostile (and warlike) nation.
Ialdaboth··on Nord Stream blast 'blew away 50 metres of pipe'
My guess is the Russians did it because they were ashamed of all the leverage nordstream was giving them on the Germans and on Europe.
Ialdaboth··on Using a framework will harm the maintenance of your software
The voice of reason. Frameworks just work for a reasonable cost, offer an easy upgrade pathway to follow, and facilitate the integration of new devs. In most case (depending of your business domain, of course), they should be more than adequate.

The cold hard truth is that most developers are not the genius hackers they fancy themselves to be.

Ialdaboth··on How Wes Anderson Turned The New Yorker Into “The French Dispatch”
Agreed, Life Aquatic is one of his strongest offering.

Totally different genres but what you are saying about Wes Anderson's writing remind me of Mamoru Hosoda's movies; left to his own devices, most of his movies after 2006 are basically a fevered fantasmagorical snippet of what his Facebook timeline would have looked like at the time.

Ialdaboth··on How Wes Anderson Turned The New Yorker Into “The French Dispatch”
It must be heart-wrenching.
Ialdaboth··on How Wes Anderson Turned The New Yorker Into “The French Dispatch”
I think The Grand Budapest Hotel is definitely his best. For once, the retro bric-a-brac aesthetics isn't purely gratuitous but is used in a narrative framework where history (as a source of tragedy, melancholy and loss) has a real purpose beyond the faux-retro gloss. And the slapstick action-adventure mystery makes it a great Tintin story.

I like Rushmore as a coming-of-age movie.

Ialdaboth··on How Wes Anderson Turned The New Yorker Into “The French Dispatch”
Brillant idea. As an anthology movie, I felt that the movie was a little too disjointed and didn't really work.
Ialdaboth··on You need to know what right-half-plane zeros are
I think "when things get worse we tend to double down on what caused things to get worse, until everything around us crash and burn" would be more accurate, given the current state of affairs.
Ialdaboth··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Precisely. I don't think he intend to rock the boat too deeply - just enough to appear to stick to his personal brand.
Ialdaboth··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Cynically speaking : Twitter is a useful tool for broadcasting the ruling class' narrative and pass it off as the mainstream one - as long as this function is not too apparent. Yielding to Musk's requests would be a clever way for the platform to regain some credit with non-elites and unbelievers.
Ialdaboth··on From context collapse to content collapse (2020)
A nice sci-fi theme sure, but one of the the worst choices possible to build a resilient society.
Ialdaboth··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
I guess you must be pretty young and havent experimented yet how easy it is to get swallowed by life.
Ialdaboth··on Don't start with microservices – monoliths are your friend
> * got too eager in seeking to create new lines of business and pushed * far too early to maturity, and now we're just beginning to see it's faults, many which can't be fixed without major changes that will likely make them pretty much useless

Welcome to tech.

Ialdaboth··on Don't start with microservices – monoliths are your friend
I've mixed feelings about it. As advertised it can be somewhat useful for business rules-rich apps, yes, but most of the times the application side of the project will just grow exponentially faster than your core - especially if you don't keep an eye on commits, as some of your coworkers may choose the easy way out and push business logic on the application side instead of refactoring... It's a clean architecture from a business logic standpoint, indeed, but it doesn't do a lot to keep the outside of the hexagone well organized (beside the port/adapter pattern), and that side of the app can grow into a mess really fast if your team lack experience.

Not as many abstraction layers than in a classic J2EE app, though. It's not that bad.

Ialdaboth··on Freedom is not a goal, but a direction
You can have both surveillance and crime, they are not mutually exclusive.
Ialdaboth··on It became common in the 18th century to speak of ‘English credulity’
Kings had secret agents and diplomats fooling around, sure. But you need the technical/societal advancements and the production surplus brought by modern civilization if you want to be able to run a totalitarian state.
Ialdaboth··on Trump bans Alipay and seven other Chinese apps
Good point.
Ialdaboth··on Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and the Unfortunate Implications
I don't remember those characters (AssCreed 1 was a long time ago). Thanks for the reminder !
Ialdaboth··on Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and the Unfortunate Implications
I don't think it's Ubisoft's fault, really - in 2020, you just can't produce a game where migrating people are presented as the bad guys who kill, rape and loot the locals indiscriminately.

I'm more frustrated by the lack of diverse body types... there is no way malnutrition, lack of modern-day medicine and violence can produce as many healthy bodies as what we see in Ubisoft titles.

Ialdaboth··on Looking at the experience of black Britons through an American lens
Agreed, but you cannot avoid it : the culture of the hegemon always set the norm inside its sphere of influence. There are major symbolic/social incentives for the local comprador elites to adopt American talking points.
Ialdaboth··on Olivia de Havilland, sophisticated star of Hollywood's golden age, dies at 104
Not holding my breath for Henry, as the deal he signed with the Devil obviously made him immortal.
Ialdaboth··on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Message to the Young: “Learn to Be Alone” (2015)
I believe the "understanding" bit goes hand-in-hand with the fetishization of nerdy intellect by the modern upper-class (especially in the managerial and IT urban elite). Whereas one recurring theme of classical art had to do with the sacred, and the experience of the sacred - something you can feel, but not something you can understand.
