Graffur··on Ask HN: Where Are All the Jobs At?
Is it just the states that the tech market is bad? What about moving abroad for awhile?
Graffur··on Ask HN: Are You Happy?
it's not a you problem. while it's not uncommon to hear or see, 99% of people do not do Whitewater kayaking as a hobby.
Graffur··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
they created an interface around a product they didn't own..
Graffur··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
These apps developers were trying to piggyback off the reddit api, so are you surprised?
Graffur··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
all of the third party apps sucked in terms of usage, hence why reddit was willing to destroy them
Graffur··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
So there third party apps were trying to run a a _profitable_ business off Redit APIs?

You said "I thought everyone was just playing up to the same fun thought-experiment" which implies you did that thinking at the time. I'm not questioning whether you knew how to breathe or understood the mechanics of it. I can only go by the information you provided.

Your reply even shows you don't understand the magic of Christmas that some children felt.

> I feel grateful to my parents that they managed to feed imagination without deceit

You're framing this deceit as a bad thing. What do you think about parents pretending a child's spoon is an airplane?

Graffur··on The man who broke bowling
Just watched it on youtube. He doesn't use the fingerholes but I wouldn't expect all pros use them. The second hand just remains on the ball longer before the throw. My verdict: not that different
Graffur··on Argos Catalogue Kettle Pages, 1976/1985 (2017)
Most children do not know what a "thought-experiment" is. I actually feel very sorry for you and other children who never believed.
Graffur··on Ways to say no with grace and style (2021)
Or worse..

the response is: list out your priorities and the impact of not doing them long with a recommendation of moving forward

... isn't that YOUR job? This especially sucks when it happens regularly and it means you're not spending any time on the prioritized work, just working on setting priorities.

Graffur··on Ask HN: Does anyone use pseudocode in the real world?
If I am whiteboarding with people in work I definitely don't try do proper syntax etc. That is pseudocode to me.
Graffur··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
No vehicles in the park is a rule for the people that use the park. The emergency vehicles aren't 'using' the park so it doesn't apply to them.
Graffur··on Ask HN: IP cameras that don't require an app or internet?
TIL thanks
Graffur··on Turning Joe Rogan down was the right thing to do
Upvoted you since you're starting going grey. People still try to silence the discussion on this for some reason.
Graffur··on Turning Joe Rogan down was the right thing to do
The public have been lied to repeatedly about covid-related subjects. The "experts" got exposed.

I salute Joe Rogan for keeping the conversation alive.

Graffur··on Svelte 4
It's basically a different flavor of modern web app development. It's key difference is that it doesn't download a full JS library to the client. The saves some ms/s on initial load. For most applications, that is not really an issue but, of course, there are some scenarios that it suits.
Graffur··on The hottest new perk in tech is freedom
If the freedom includes mandatory status update video calls.. is it really freedom?
Graffur··on Thoughts on Svelte(Kit), one year and 3B requests later
> I never built a web app in my life.

> I would highly suggest people to try SvelteKit.

I feel like this is a good summary of tech trends these days.

Graffur··on A case for toe socks
What do you think that dirt is going to do to you? What about if you have a child who rolls around in the grass and then comes in? Or a baby pram who's wheels go everywhere, or a wheelchair user enters your house, or you have a cat or a dog?

While I do take my shoes off in my hall and wear socks in doors all the time, I think the no shoes thing has entered meme territory.

Graffur··on System Initiative: Second Wave DevOps
So it is Flickr I have to thank for this devops nonsense
Graffur··on Show HN: Askyoutube – Ask YouTube anything
5 minute wait lol.. at least show some pre-loaded examples
Graffur··on Two years of teaching high school CS
It's like people who spend 2 years programming and become an engineering manager or worse director
Graffur··on Sequence diagrams, the only good thing UML brought to software development
When will people learn.. you need to write down stuff. Pictures are a good addition to writing, not the other way around.
Graffur··on Working quickly is more important than it seems (2015)
Agreed. In the same vein I have seen this approach work well too: "make the issue a big deal, then be the hero that fixes it"

If you just fix it business as usual.. or prevent the issue then noone will care about you.

Graffur··on List one task, do it, cross it out
I think you might be in the wrong place. You're annoyed that people are discussing a 6-month old promising technology on _hacker_ news?
Graffur··on List one task, do it, cross it out
Hey there. That reply doesn't seem to vibe with how HN works.
Graffur··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
Do you think that person speaks for all Kenyans? Clearly $2 an hour is too little but people are exploitable when they need money.
Graffur··on Ask HN: Have you made a career move “down” on purpose, and how has it been?
> recruitment, management, strategy, etc

This is all objectively easier and less skillful than your co-workers work. For example, if you recruit wrong.. the company will just fire all those people (as demonstrated by X number of companies in recent months). There will likely be no short term or long term repercussion for you unless you're one of the people fired.

For strategy, if you strategize wrong it is probably contained within a product or section of the company. I doubt you could tank the whole big tech company you work for. You'll just move on to a different project.

Sounds like you're making big money to show up to meetings.

Graffur··on Tell HN: Gmail's spam filters have gone bonkers
Gmail allows lots of obvious spam into my inbox. Seems like the spammers are winning the war.
Graffur··on Ask HN: How do you delay a job offer?
My company doesn't do that and I assume companies don't do pro rata bonuses as they are a tool for staff retention.
