DrOctagon··on Make your website a black hole to big tech
Happy (recent) Fathom customer. I use it on a handful of small side projects.

I hope there is space in the market for a product like this. I did a reasonable amount of research and the $14/month is worth it for the handful of side projects I use it on.

Their marketing can be a little earnest, but for me the product strikes the right balance between the info provided, privacy, and cost.

DrOctagon··on Why do holes horrify me?
I'm fine with crumpets but the thought of lotus pods is too much.

A few years ago I tried to get to the bottom of how Quarantine (made in Canada) ended up with a soundtrack of independent Aussie bands. Great bands, but bands that had a niche following, even in Australia, at the time.

I only got silence and a couple of shrugs in response to my emails though.

DrOctagon··on Eliud Kipchoge Breaks Two-Hour Marathon Barrier
2:21 is not even in the same ballpark as <2:00. 2:21 is a very respectable time, but not even international/national standard. It's a chasm.
DrOctagon··on Largest Contentful Paint
How often do the other GUI implementations you mention load arbitrary code across an unreliable network?
DrOctagon··on Europe is edging towards making post-car cities a reality
Class isn't purely economic. It is the perception of 'inner city elites' being out of touch with the rest of the country.

In the recent Australian election, the (losing) Labour Party had a policy to target 50% of vehicles being electric by 2030.

The Liberal party jumped on this and ran a scare campaign that Labour was trying to take away the vehicles that Australians love for work and recreation, utes and 4WD/SUVs. It worked, not because any inherent inferiority of electric vehicles but, because people don't want to be told what is best for them by people that don't understand their needs.

DrOctagon··on Why the French love to say no
Agreed it is just filler. It's closer to "But" or "Um" or "You know" than a "Yeah" or "Nah".

This song will clarify it from an Aussie perspective: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyadntqXjn4

DrOctagon··on We Need a New Science of Progress
That's a thoughtful answer, thanks. I don't agree with all of your points, but I do think of progress as something which benefits everyone, including vulnerable people too.
DrOctagon··on We Need a New Science of Progress
I'm curious, what do you think those 'things we have to fix' first are? Why they are a higher priority?
DrOctagon··on A "cure" for baldness could be around the corner
I took finsteride for a couple of years in my mid to late twenties. My libido was affected but I'm not sure if it was the drug or the severe lack of confidence caused by the realisation I was going to be bald soon.

I started balding on my crown, but being relatively tall I could hide it when standing or when facing people seated. After months of doing crazy stuff like getting to restaurants early so I could get a seat with my back to a wall and declining meetings in glass-walled meeting rooms at work I decided enough was enough and shaved my head.

Making that move was the best thing I could have done for my confidence. Instantly I felt better about myself and that translated in to other areas of my life.

DrOctagon··on Ask HN: What have the past 12 months taught you?
I'd be very skeptical of any analysis that takes one minute at a shoe shop. I'd wager those machines are there to anchor, so to speak, a buying decision.

Too much running before the body gets strong enough to handle it, along with hard surfaces are more likely the culprit behind shin splints than poor choice of shoe.

DrOctagon··on Tell HN: Pluralsight and the dark-pattern of auto-renewals
Pluralsight stung me after the free first 10 days too. I was wary, and even after carefully reading the conditions I didn't think the first payment was automatic.
DrOctagon··on Developers don't understand CORS
If an HTTP API is GET request only and there is no authentication for the API, think public weather info API, is there any risks with having "Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *" set?

I've tried to get my head around CORS a few times without much luck.

DrOctagon··on What I Learned Co-Founding Dribbble
Handcrafted CSS had a profound influence on my career as a front-end developer. That said, these days I'm neck deep in JavaScript like so many of us. To more simple times!
DrOctagon··on Coca-Cola most common source of packaging pollution on UK beaches: study
Why can't we just go to 100% aluminium for beverage packaging? The technology and supply chains etc. are already in place.
DrOctagon··on John Carmack on QuakeWorld latency and business model (1996)
I've been keeping personal .plan files since the last time I saw them mentioned on HN. So only a couple of weeks at this stage.

In some ways they reflect the way I've gone about a days work more clearly than other project management/bug tracking software I'm required to use.

DrOctagon··on The boring front-end developer (2014)
It isn't about your problems, it is about your user's problems.
DrOctagon··on Thinking on Your Feet
The featured runner's (Yuki Kawauchi) highest profile victory was the 2018 Boston Marathon. He and his agent put together an excellent strategy to take advantage of the horrible conditions to nullify his much faster opponents.

Great read on this here: http://japanrunningnews.blogspot.com/2018/04/how-it-happened...

DrOctagon··on The Heart of a Swimmer vs. the Heart of a Runner
Shin splints is the classic injury for enthusiastic people who see aerobic improvements that outpace the strengthening of muscle, tendon and bone. Shin splints is almost unheard of amongst experienced runners.

It's fantastic that squats helped you, but if you are primarily looking to improve your running then months of training at a lower intensity, to avoid the shin splints, is much more productive than stop-start training resulting from the need to let your injury heal.

DrOctagon··on The Heart of a Swimmer vs. the Heart of a Runner
Hyponatremia (broadly low sodium levels from drinking too much water) is one of the leading causes of death during/shortly after a marathon.
DrOctagon··on Digital Guide to Low Tech
I view Low Tech Magazine's website as a thought experiment (even art) rather than a pure engineering endeavor.

They do ask for feedback on improving the energy efficiency of the website but viewing it only as a series of optimisations is a very narrow view. The broader context is much more interesting.
