BooneJS··on Self-calibrating USB Paper Tape Reader
Back in college - a while ago - I made a project that played blackjack. I punched holes in a real deck and optosensors would detect light shining through the holes. 4 bits. This solution is significantly more elegant!
BooneJS··on Estimating PaLM's Training Cost
> Of course, Google didn't pay that much. They own the hardware.

You’re right. Google had to: 1. Design, tape-out, manufacture, and deploy TPUv4 2. Run PaLM

BooneJS··on Tesla Ordered to Buy Back Model 3 After Customer Describes Autopilot as Drunk
FSD on my Model Y keeps me on my toes. Not only do I look out for vehicles, pedestrians, and wild animals, I also have to be ready to take over if it slams on the brakes on the freeway or decides the safest way to navigate a gradual corner on a highway is by having the left wheels on the centerline. I'm holding out hope.
BooneJS··on U.S. Surnames with No Vowels
I've seen Srb in southern Wisconsin and Smrz in central Wisconsin (ironically including Plover, WI)
BooneJS··on A decent team could reverse engineer a version one in a month
Free speech is only in reference to government punishment. I can spout off and the government won't punch me in the mouth. The person standing next to me, however, might.

I don't understand why we keep expecting private companies to behave like the government.

BooneJS··on Bashing the Bash – Replacing Shell Scripts with Python (2017)
In my experience, bash makes the simple things simple and the hard things (like complex pipelines, validating arguments, or “pure bash”) really hard. YMMV.

Python makes everything medium difficulty which can be a big win depending on the size of automation required.

BooneJS··on You and the planet need a heat pump
We're building a house in Wisconsin soon. We think that ground-source geothermal is required for efficient electrical HVAC without gas, but if we can save a ton of $$$ and go with air-source heat pump, that would be awesome.
BooneJS··on Special Counsel Finds Mark Zuckerberg’s Donation Violated Wisconsin Laws [pdf]

BooneJS··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
Adobe Lightroom. It's stagnant but I keep paying.
BooneJS··on Wisconsin Judge Prevents Nurses from Going to New Employer
At-will employment. I don’t see how anything outweighs that. Former employer didn’t want to raise salaries nor did they want to lose people. They chose to go to court instead. The traitorous 7?
BooneJS··on Ask HN: How to take first steps to escape burnout?
Can you find little things in the day-to-day that are exciting by setting the bar lower? Can you pick up hobbies outside of work like wood working, reading non-fiction, or baking/cooking? Can you come up with a personal roadmap, one that emphasizes personal learning/improvement outside of work?

Your job will always be at least somewhat out of your control, and burnout can come from feeling helpless in a situation you don't like. It's time to take control of the things you can actually control.

BooneJS··on Almost Always Unsigned
Low-level programming, dealing with hardware registers, is so often unsigned that I use unsigned everywhere I don't need negative numbers. Youtube going 64-bit was inevitable, but overflowing 2^31 should not have been one of them. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/12/gangn...
BooneJS··on Vim9 Script Feature-Complete
Competition is good, and it’s the reason why Neovim was created in the first place!
BooneJS··on Reflections on a Year with HomeKit
Different schedules. If I weren't worried about having it on for an hour longer than necessary, I guess a timer would be fine.
BooneJS··on Midwest Developer
I work at Google Madison with many other software and silicon engineers. Come take a look! https://careers.google.com/locations/madison/

Nearest DC is in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

BooneJS··on Midwest Developer
I spent 13 years at Cray in CF. Great start to my career.
BooneJS··on Reflections on a Year with HomeKit
My HomeKit home only consists of 2 smart plugs by Eve (evehome.com). They operate over Thread which our HomePod Mini enables. We have one for the lamps in the bedroom and one on our espresso machine. Coming downstairs to a warm espresso machine in the morning is great.
BooneJS··on Internet addiction and the habit of book reading
Is this a "in case I switch books", or a "in case I have to look something up" convenience?
BooneJS··on Bird populations declining fast across North America
We've been slowly turning our urban backyard into a pleasant place for birds, but we still have 70% grass. It's not clear to me how to introduce native grasses without upsetting my neighbors.
BooneJS··on Geothermal's path to relevance: cheap drilling
We put geothermal in a house we built outside of Madison, WI. 4 wells dug, 150 ft each, for hearing and cooling. We set our home to 70F 24/7/365 and left it alone. We usually get a week to 10 days of never going above 0 F, and on some of those days the unit ran 20 hours a day to keep up.
BooneJS··on Home Price to Income Ratio
How is this true? I think our home was 2x our family income. It’s been paid off for a while.
BooneJS··on The reason employees aren't returning to work in America [video]
But how many people saw how pointless working 9-5 was when they’re making low pay that barely covers daycare? They changed their spending habits and one parent stayed home with the kids.
BooneJS··on Best American Gas Station Food, by Region
Any listicle that omits Kwik Trip from the upper Midwest is opening up with fightin’ words. I tell ya. https://biztimes.com/cult-brands-kwik-trip-midwest-airlines-...
BooneJS··on Feds probe NY Tesla crash that killed man changing flat tire
My Model Y is generally unconcerned with out of place stuff on the road. Bicycles? Yes. People walking? Not really. “Yield in crosswalk” posts in the middle of the road? No.
BooneJS··on Personal finance experts don’t get wealthy by following their own advice
Can I apply this article to the theme of the site? You’ll never get rich by joining a startup. Founders and investors have too much control writing the rules and making the decisions. Everyone hates bureaucratic institutions but the alternative with a startup is an oligarchy consisting of (often) inexperienced people playing the role for the first time. Even bad exits favor the founders over the employees.
BooneJS··on How to Remember What You Read
One bit from this post was on taking notes. I’ve purchased several nice notebooks (moleskine, Baron Fig, etc) to use but I always hate how jumbled my commonplace notes got and I’d quit. Most of these notebooks are 25% completed.

I bought a reMarkable 2 earlier this year and have loved it. I have a notebook per subject and I can append to each without carrying multiple paper notebooks or getting upset by the lack of organization in a single commonplace notebook.

If you like paper but hate disorganization, and have the disposable income, give it or another eInk tablet a try.

BooneJS··on Moving Avoids California Tax? Not So Fast
My FAANG employer and my CPA both agree I owe tax on RSUs that “partially vested” while a resident. An example of 48 shares of RSUs that vest 1/48 every month for 4 years (48 months), and I lived in CA for 6 months after they were granted (not vested, granted). In months 1-6, all were 100% California taxable. In month 7, I owed 6/7ths of the normal California tax. In month 8, it was 6/8ths. In month 48, the final vest, will be taxed by California at 6/48ths of a full resident. My new state also taxes them, but I can deduct taxes I pay to California so I don’t get double-taxes.
BooneJS··on Moving Avoids California Tax? Not So Fast
I left California 2 years ago, and I still have 2 years of taxes to pay on RSUs granted while a resident.
BooneJS··on The Pleasures of Tsundoku: How I learned to stop worrying and love book piles
I recently just used LibraryThing to catalog all of my books. The UPC camera/scanner was nice although I had to laugh when I saw a picture of a cue cat on the site! I’ve got all of my ebooks and audiobooks catalogued as well. Turns out I loved some books so much I bought them in 2 forms. Oops.
BooneJS··on “Swift is the only language I could find with over 100 keywords”
