AtomicOrbital··on Haiti left with no elected government officials as it spirals towards anarchy
Haiti has a unique humanitarian history going back to being the first successful slave revolt and subsequently isolated economically by France and her friends namely USA ... with this comes no major trading partners and poverty ... no blog post on Haiti should leave out this origin story of their misery going back 3 centuries
AtomicOrbital··on Monitoring ECC memory on Linux with rasdaemon
Pre ECC I know one big bank which republished incoming data feeds onto multiple geographically distinct compute back in early 90's to address this or any such single point of failure ... a different level of confidence is appreciated when running aggregate 12 digit books
AtomicOrbital··on The science of having ideas in the shower
neuroscience major unmet milestone will be when folk can hit replay to review adjacent past thoughts and perceptions... Monster catalyst to reward those fleeting ahaaas streams which spark off the best thoughts
AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of all the content you encounter?
I save into several text files (20 files) ... one big one ( >100k lines) for anything software related organized using labels like

curl tricks _____________

      something here about curl
then most anything else goes into a second big file mostly grab bag ... then I have other specific files for : travel, nyc, todo, videos, etc

then from a terminal I can grep into each using say :

grep -B20 -A20 someSearchString workfile

in above the parms A and B return the surrounding lines from the matching line of txt file ... then to further filter output I sometime pipe output of above grep into another grep

using this process I find I can retrieve anything I have stored I just need to save each item into a meaningful label using above xxxx tricks ... this process works just fine ... have been using this for past decade or more

naturally all of these files are auto backed up to the cloud ... currently using mega.io yet previously was using dropbox

PS. I use a ubuntu linux laptop/desktop

AtomicOrbital··on Synth pioneer and maker of ‘Popcorn’, Gershon Kingsley (2019)
a friend introduced me to Gershon one afternoon at his midtown apartment where we enjoyed a conversation about audio synthesis ... I explained to him an ongoing software coding project where my code moves 3D objects in an imaginary volume of space which bounces ~molecules~ of air to propagate waves outward from this movement ... in the volume I introduced the notion of an ear to listen to these waves by counting the number of ~molecules~ moving inward minus number moving outward ... Gershon was comfortable imagining audio at this level of abstraction and felt such was a natural progression from his body of work ...
AtomicOrbital··on Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids

AtomicOrbital··on Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids
I wash dishes by hand with hot water and a Korean abrasive cloth using no soap ... It's quicker and easier than anything else
AtomicOrbital··on Asian faiths try to save swastika symbol corrupted by Hitler
Living and working in Asia for many years I have enjoyed seeing this symbol on many temples ... its a beautiful energy boost obviously absolutely nothing to do with hitler influence ... long live this symbol
AtomicOrbital··on Dear Crypto and Fiat Bros
USD is fiat currency backed only by a rogue gov who has sunken itself into $42 trillion of debt ... how does that gov stay afloat ? it prints fake USD which floods the market resulting in inflation

look at the value of USD over past 100 years judged against a basket of commodities https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2014/article/one-hundred-years-...

value of USD is now 1 percent of its value less that 100 years ago and continually falls in relative value to commodities needed by the population

the value proposition of bitcoin: it is not issued nor managed by a mafia masquerading as the non governmental non reserve holding non bank called the Federal Reserve Bank which put USA in a choke hold death spiral back in 1913

besides BTC is independent of any country so if say USA fed gov makes stupid laws against it well those holders are free to move offshore

do yourself a favor and research the percentage of total global financial assets held in offshore tax havens ... those financial parasites should be the target of our concern not bitcoin fans

AtomicOrbital··on Tell HN: As a dev, Slack has ruined my life
first killer app of ML will be a robo Slack replacement who manages all the noise and spoon feeds only the nuggets needed on a per employee level similar to what back in the days a good manager did for the team
AtomicOrbital··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
government has gone way too far ... kids need the freedom and independence of exploring their neighborhood and surroundings ... when I was that age all the kids in town would travel as a pack sometimes riding our bikes 10 miles to the next village with our dogs running at our sides ... I do not buy the Oh restrict to save them mentality ... when gov imposes what has happened here it kills the future of our kids
AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
This video was my breakthrough in learning how to pass data into a FFT call and to parse the output returned from the call

AtomicOrbital··on High-Tech Cars Are Killing the Auto Repair Shop
I can see a demand for a modular open hardware / open source ecosystem where the community takes ownership and drives change from these shared resources ... car review process needs to include a review of the vehicle's ease of repair outlining compliance to these industry wide open source plugNplay components
AtomicOrbital··on Philips Cuts 4,000 Employees
lest we forget they gave us ASML
AtomicOrbital··on I help seniors with technology issues
I also help locals with their PC issues ... my favorite solution is to wipe the drive and install Ubuntu ... they get the same browsers without fighting Windows ... these new linux users absolutely love their PC once again
AtomicOrbital··on TSMC downgraded as analysts warn of worst slump in a decade
allowing entire ecosystem to have a single point of failure/success is very risky... gone are the days of such a monolithic enterprise... massively distributed small scale machines are needed not asml and tsmc ... disruption is coming
AtomicOrbital··on Even after $100B, self-driving cars are going nowhere
30,000+ fatal vehicle accidents annually, not 3000

AtomicOrbital··on Do fungi lurking inside cancers speed their growth?

AtomicOrbital··on UK Has ‘No Chance in Hell’ of Making Its Own Tech Champs: ARM Founder
For newcomers ARM cpu was/is designed in the UK ... Say nothing about Alan Turing who first conceived of how digital computation can happen using hardware then went on to help design and build one of the first computers and yes he coded it to use a Bayesian algorithm... Not to mention Thomas Bayes, De Morgan, Charles Baggage and Boole of boolean logic fame just for starters
AtomicOrbital··on Show HN: Free app to share your screen more privately

AtomicOrbital··on What happened to Tandy computers
back then I had a commodore vic 20 which ran out of ram simply coding up the creation of a backgammon game in basic so I borrowed a friends TRS80 ... wow what a dream machine ... I was able to finish writing the program and its graphics was infinitely higher resolution than my vic 20 ... I have fond memories of that Radio Shack box
AtomicOrbital··on Simulated Growing Plants
Sure some NN tool can ape anything however that approach sheds zero intuition on understanding the hidden structure of what it's mimicking... current wave of NN masks asking the important questions like how does a cell grow ... I fear NN mania kicks the can down the road without revealing anything fundamental to understanding
AtomicOrbital··on 5k Years Later, Beavers Return to the High Plains of West Texas
wildlife in general with the exception of insects has flourished over the past 20 years here in upstate New York ( Norwich area ) probably due to massive depopulation ( globalization forced shutdown of most local factories ) and fewer hunters ... beavers, turkeys, black bear, bobcat etc used to be extremely rare now are making a come back

cities get bigger yet towns get smaller seems to be the trend not just locally but across the globe

AtomicOrbital··on Show HN: VoxelChain – An Experimental Voxel Engine
I get same error on ff 105.0a1 (2022-08-01) (64-bit) running on Ubuntu 22.04 ... however I know WebGL runs fine on this setup

on same laptop using chrome Version 106.0.5249.21 (Official Build) dev (64-bit) get error

[.WebGL-0x1b80018ed800]GL ERROR :GL_INVALID_OPERATION : glDrawArrays: Source and destination textures of the draw are the same.

again this same chrome browser runs other WebGL just fine

AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?

AtomicOrbital··on Scrum Has Failed the Developers
Exactly ... agile fails on any project which requires pure research or exploratory hard problems which are above and beyond just grunt work ... Agile shops typically assume the work is predictable and just a function of redoing a known recipe
