Anon84··on Port of Los Angeles says shipping volume will plummet 35% next week
It may not matter. The ships that were supposed to be here, aren't. Even if the tariffs were lifted today, it would still take weeks for new orders to be shipped and delivered to the US. We're very much in the FO part of FAFO
Anon84··on A Map of British Dialects (2023)
A few years ago I worked on an empirical (twitter data) look at how English dialects change from place to place and how British and American evolved separately (based on Google Books): https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal...

Anon84··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
I'm working on my epidemic modeling package in Python: https://github.com/DataForScience/epidemik (also https://pypi.org/project/epidemik/).

Currently adding support:

- loading/saving models

- model library

- simple math in parameter definition (for example, defining beta=2*eta, where eta is defined previously)

- viral intra-host models

- demographics

- arbitrary seasonality functions

The goal is to have it all ready for when my Cambridge epidemic modeling review gets published in a couple of months.

It's my first serious package, so I would love any feedback

Anon84··on German civil activists win victory in election case against X
Let me chime in quickly, from the perspective of someone who worked for a few years on Twitter data (see https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=rtKaL18AAAAJ&hl=en...).

The Twitter API used to be extremely open way back in the day. This proved to be a boon for all kinds of social (and not so social) science research. In my mind, this was also one of the reasons for Twitter early growth as it made it trivial to build apps that interact with it. Over the years, the API got increasingly closed, making research in this area extremely difficult.

On the plus side, a decision like this can bring back the good old days of easy access for researchers. The down side, of course, is that it's almost impossible to define "researcher" in a way that prevents Cambridge Analytica like abuses from occurring again (not that the current owner is particularly interested in preventing them)

Anon84··on Antiqua et Nova: Note on the relationship between AI and human intelligence
As someone (I forget who), "God is not something you believe in. God is something you experience". In my view, any given religion is just the accumulated ways in which a specific group of people found to handle the aftermath of that experience.

Of course, the problem is that you get indoctrinated into a religion before you have a chance to experience It in the first place and end up mistaking the aftermath of the experience

A lot of the motional subsystems in your brain are turned off when you dream so you don’t react to things as you normally would. Nightmares, etc happen when those subsystems stay on for some reason (PTSD, for example). See Chap 10 (IIRC) https://amzn.to/3DzSLva

Anon84··on Bird flu in Canada may have mutated to become more transmissible to humans
You probably did, but it wasn't called CoVID back then. I remember I had Chinese coworkers who were already forced to quaranteen when they went home around late Dec 2019.

In the beginning nobody knew what it was and it went through some name changes over the first few months. It the beginning (from what I remember) it was nCov19 (as in Novel Coronavirus). Eventually people figured out it was an off-shoot of SARS-Cov (from 2004) so it settled as SARS-CoV-2 and the respective cluster of symptoms/disease as CoVID-19 (CoronaVirus Infectious Disease).
