> Sugars are part of a balanced diet

Citation needed. Only two things are necessary to live: protein and fat. Carbohydrates are decent fuel. Literal sugar (as added fructose/glucose to regular food for taste) isn't required for a diet to be called balanced or healthy any more than alcohol is (both are considered fuel for the metabolic system).

Thankfully the body is quite resilient and can work with reasonable amounts of sugar or alcohol in the diet, but to say it's part of a balanced diet is a bit of a stretch.

Re: fructose. I was reading recently some interesting theories about fructose possibly being obesogenic, I'm about to leave so I can't do a proper Google search and link the studies. The theory makes sense evolutionarily: fruits were mostly available for a couple months a year, so the body tries to store fruit sugar as fat, for the long cold winter days, instead of using them immediately as short term energy in the form of glycogen.

"He had a proper dietary routine now, he said. [...], made oatmeal for breakfast, ate a banana as a snack, had a salad or PB&J for lunch, and some pasta for dinner."

Ah yes, the proper diet of carbs and sugar, little protein and even less fat. PB&J for lunch for a diabetic, seriously? We're still a few decades away before the common populace and your GPs learns that sugar, especially fructose, is one of the biggest causes of the obesity epidemic.

1_player··on Four-year-old Israeli child tests positive for polio, first case since 1989
Yet on the page strictly about babies and children, the recommendation is to "[use] a moderate amount of poultry meat and some red meat as a source of protein. [...] Eating fish two to three times a week is recommended for the whole family."

https://www.ruokavirasto.fi/en/themes/healthy-diet/nutrition...

There's far too many stories of babies dying of malnutrition on vegan diets. While it's possible to make them healthier for them, let's not go saying it's recommended, just like children can survive on crappy junk food (and plenty of them sadly have to), provided it's fortified with nutrients for them. There's a difference between surviving and thriving.

Again, semantics. One side doesn't have a proxy, the other does. Should we really be splitting hairs on the correct definition?
1_player··on Ukraine accepted to NATO cyber defence centre
We are cooperating because we're terrified we have a madman at our doorstep.

Are you saying Europe and US and NATO aren't scared shitless of what's going on in Ukraine? I am. Still, what's happening is the definition of proxy war, and I don't see the point of discussing semantics.

1_player··on Ukraine accepted to NATO cyber defence centre
Russia is indeed being a bully, the West (and not only) is terrified of this turn of events and the best course of action is to send as much equipment and weapons into Ukraine, apply catastrophic economic sanctions hoping the Russian citizens or oligarchs topple the dictator while officially not being at war.

"A proxy war is an armed conflict between two states or non-state actors which act on the instigation or on behalf of other parties that are not directly involved in the hostilities. In order for a conflict to be considered a proxy war, there must be a direct, long-term relationship between external actors and the belligerents involved. The aforementioned relationship usually takes the form of funding, military training, arms, or other forms of material assistance which assist a belligerent party in sustaining its war effort." — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_war

1_player··on Ukraine accepted to NATO cyber defence centre
These past few days we are trying to see how far we can take this proxy war without having to invoke NATO's Article 5 and precipitate into WW3. These are very precarious times.

It seems it depends which generation we're talking about. Younger Russians seems to be the ones most connected and thus aware of what's going on abroad, while middle aged Russians are playing the ostrich and burying their head in the sand. I saw an interview yesterday of a journalist wanting to show 50-something Russian people what's going on in Ukraine, and most of them were like "I don't want to see, get that thing away from me. It's bullshit, that's not what the news has been saying at all. I stand with Putin."

Here's how to run Elden Ring with actually better performance than Windows:

- Use the latest Proton-GE or Proton Experimental (and switch to its bleeding edge branch). That fixes the anticheat and it includes patches to work around the shoddy DX12 logic in the game.

- If you're running on RDNA2, you might want to install mesa 22 or the latest git version. This is crucial for the best performance.

- On most AMD cards, it's worth trying to force the GPU frequencies to max. For some reason the GPU doesn't stay in high perf mode and it's a cause of frame drops.

The game stutters a bit on Windows and frame rate is inconsistent, while I have stable 60 fps on 4k Maximum quality on Linux. I've played 6h non stop today.

Nothing. Elden Ring is here, it's the new big thing, and I'm playing it on my Fedora box. The future is now. All of the games I play or want to play are running great, and I play a lot.

Truthfully, hacks might be needed, it's not grandma time yet for Linux gaming, but the hard part (Windows translation layer) is working really well.

> he is against meditation for reasons

Again, this is _your_ interpretation. They only said they're Christian, and you've decided this must be the reason they're against, and their opinion is worthless. You're just colouring their opinion with YOUR preconceptions.

Their opinion matches my experience, and other commenters, and I'm not Christian at all. Why are you taking it so personally? It's an intellectually stimulating topic, you're free to disagree without dismissing the person based on their religion.

1_player··on Not everyone should meditate
The point I'm making is I'm not sure they're viewing it through that lens, but rather GP is dismissing the article because the author is Christian and _some_ of them are known to be against meditation. It does not segue that all Christians are against it. GP seems to be the biased one here with a preconceived opinion.
1_player··on Not everyone should meditate
I don't know. They're Christian but their argument is more nuanced than just thinking meditation is opening up to the dark side. I think it's worth talking about, especially given the experiences shared by other posters in the comments.

While this makes business sense, what kind of world are we creating where nothing is worth investing in if we can't monetize the fuck out of it? Where KPI and user engagement is king?

Thanks, I hate that. Mozilla is dying because they've forgotten their core product. We're here for the browser, not the content that makes us the product.

Very true, though the public opinion seems to be overwhelmingly against the Russian government, while being sympathetic to the Russian civilians, recognising they're being lied to, brainwashed, and don't care for this war either.
1_player··on Twitter restricted in Russia amid conflict with Ukraine
Superhero media has been trendy for a while now, and now there's a real life leader and real life fight for liberty against a supervillain.

It's quite uncanny, but among all this senseless massacre I find there is something immensely beautiful and human in people all over the world united towards the same ideal, even if we're safe in our houses and they're dying under the bombs. "The next war will be livestreamed" has been a common meme intended in the negative sense, but to me there might be something positive about it being shown raw, in real time what kind of absolute hell war is, from your next door Tiktoker.

I also expect worldwide catharsis when this fucking war ends, hopefully a small moment of hope and respite for humanity as a whole. We've been needing that.
