zerohp··on Myths Programmers Believe about CPU Caches (2018)
The author has a good grasp of coherence but either ignores or fails to understand memory ordering.
zerohp··on Reddit Doubles Down
The president demonstrated it from 2016 to 2020. We are just seeing the copycats now.
zerohp··on Ask HN: Intel Mac Pro Users with > 192GB of RAM, Views on New Machine?
OpenSCAD is a problem even with 96GB ram.

Something is very wrong with their build on Apple Silicon. It works fine for me on other platforms.

zerohp··on Lawyer cited 6 fake cases made up by ChatGPT; judge calls it “unprecedented”
It is almost certainly case 2. People don't often write text on the internet just to say that they don't know. It doesn't even make sense to post that most of the time.

A great example would be on a Q/A forum or something like Stackoverflow. It better to let someone else answer when you don't know.

zerohp··on YouTuber who staged plane crash faces up to 20 years jail
Good. Make an example out of him.
zerohp··on The Framework Laptop 13
Large die area and low production volumes.
zerohp··on Ask HN: Is "At which age did you start coding?” a good data point for hiring?
One of the smartest engineers I know learned to program in college at 20 years old. He has never done much coding outside of coursework or the workplace and now works on the Windows kernel at Microsoft.

This is a bad question.

zerohp··on Apple’s fight against iPhone sideloading was pointless at best, harmful at worst
Facebook has been a bad actor in this realm before: https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/30/apple-bans-facebook-vpn/
zerohp··on Jim Blinn and Ed Catmull – graphics class at Berkeley (1981)
I took a couple computer graphics classes in 2015 as part of my Computer Science degree. I only clicked through a few videos here and the content is very similar.
zerohp··on Ask HN: If the CPU redesigned today, with no legacy incentives what can change?
You can directly choose what is available on the instruction side by using the XN (aka XD) permission bits in the page table. Other mechanisms exist to make pages readable by instruction fetch but not readable by the data side.

Von Neumann vs Harvard is a pointless discussion. Both are too simplistic describe modern architectures.

zerohp··on Ask HN: Would anyone find this system fair?
> I brought it up with my manager and was told I would be rewarded, it was a miniscule improvement. I got enough to would cover a few extra coffees.

Get a new job. There's no solution here because management does not respect your effort.

zerohp··on Do not taunt happy fun branch predictor
> Going by the semantics of the opcodes themselves, there's no reason why RET should be treated differently from a simple indirect jump here.

RET is documented as a subroutine return hint in the official ARM architecture reference manual. That's the only reason it has a distinct opcode from BR.

BL is also documented as a subroutine call hint.

zerohp··on Microsoft Azure Outage
Yet people continue to defend Microsoft's telemetry practices. The OS won't let you opt out without it fighting you and they'll even fight you for blocking it on the network.

Windows is spyware.

zerohp··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
Yes there is hope.

I started college at 34, took 6 years to get two bachelors and a masters. Now I am a hardware engineer at a big tech (FAANG) company. I was an intern at 39 years old. That is not to say that you should go back to school. I'm just using myself as an example of someone that started their career over.

So to the first and fourth question the answer is yes. The others can only be answered by you.

zerohp··on Microsoft to lay off 11k employees
> Most developers at FANGS can be replaced with mediocre devs in iowa or India. They will cut high-priced salaries soon and replace them with entry-level talent.

Software companies have been trying this for 30 years and it has never worked.

zerohp··on Ask HN: How do you choose your usernames?
Would you put in your real name and address on all of those sites?
zerohp··on Directly access your physical memory (dev/mem)
A very common usage for /dev/mem is to access a device through memory mapped IO from user space.

Cacheable accesses would break that use case.

zerohp··on What happens when a CPU starts
This is pretty old. There's quite a lot that happens before instructions start on modern CPUs.

Just one small example: CPUs have many small SRAM arrays for micro-architecture features like branch predictors. Some of these need to be initialized after reset by a state machine that takes many cycles.

I have even heard of a large chip that pushes initialization vectors through the scan chains so that all flops begin in an initial state, without requiring a reset network.

zerohp··on Ask HN: Son is major in CS, but doesn't code. Red flag?
Your kid is in college now. It's time to stop helicopter parenting.
zerohp··on Existing smartphones will connect with new satellite constellations in 2023
The U.S. successfully shot down a satellite at that altitude in 1985 with an F-15 and a specially designed missile. Are they all 35 years behind? I don't think that's a good assumption.
zerohp··on The Psychedelic Inspiration for Hypercard (2018)
Every 7th grader in my middle school computer class learned to use Hypercard and I wouldn't say any of them were tech savvy at that age in 1990.
zerohp··on NTSC encoding/decoding in C89 using only integers and fixed point math
I disagree for the reason that the hardware that is synchronizing the video is the Amiga itself, not the 3rd party hardware.

https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/22320/wha...

zerohp··on NTSC encoding/decoding in C89 using only integers and fixed point math
The horizontal and vertical syncs[1] (along with the system clock) can be inputs on the video connector. That's what enabled all of the 3rd party genlock hardware. It was designed into the Agnus from the start.

Without that you'd need an external framebuffer like an infinite window TBC, which is much more expensive.

zerohp··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Does the car work if the cellular connection is physically disabled?
zerohp··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Tesla's implementation is materially different in that it's not optional and cannot be trivially disabled.

Early Onstar vehicles are trivial to disable and later ones can still be disabled by removing the radio transceiver. The vehicle operates normally without it, unlike a Tesla.

zerohp··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Yeah what kind of car maker would pioneer something like that?
zerohp··on Ask HN: Are You Using 5G?
No. I have 5 Gbps fiber at home.

I don't really care about the bandwidth of mobile internet as long as it is minimally usable. If I'm not at home or work then I'm out living my life, not stuck to the screen.

zerohp··on People tricking ChatGPT “like watching an Asimov novel come to life”
It's more scary because those answers are often subtly wrong in ways that a non-expert cannot detect.
zerohp··on Stable Diffusion with Core ML on Apple Silicon
Are you an attorney?
zerohp··on Stable Diffusion with Core ML on Apple Silicon
Redistributing that model to end users that violate Attachment A seems like a minefield.
