zen21··on Is Twitter Breaking?
It’s hard to understand why the existing employees would feel any loyalty now. Even if that don’t have any problem with Musk’s management style, they no longer have stock options, and any profit the company makes is going to pay back a loan that provided no resources to the company. How is that worth working on?
zen21··on Tether's Troubles in November 2022
A casino going bankrupt means gambling addicts will be able to seek treatment for their illness.
zen21··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
Why would a weighted coin have 50-50 odds? That sounds like a fair coin, and miscalculated odds.

1: “Never attribute to incompetence that which can be adequately explained by greed."

2: “Never assume malice by that which could be explained by incompetence.”

1+2 = 3: “Never attribute malice to that which can be adequately by greed”

zen21··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
In the absence of a government, people would respond to fraud using violence. The government protects embezzlers and fraudsters from the violence of those they have cheated, but in turn creates non-violent consequences for such behaviors.

Would you say they are A-OK?
zen21··on Tether's Troubles in November 2022
Crypto isn’t money. The money has already changed hands when people speculated on the tokens. If anything, wiping crypto off the books will be deflationary to real currencies.

Presumably the world in general. Just like the sooner cigarettes are gone the better.

Who would you trust instead?
zen21··on The one about Lisp interactivity
This seems to leave out the existence of debuggers in IDEs.

These days I tend to run most new code in the debugger, and step through it so I can see what’s going on. This works great in say, Rust, Python, or Swift. I haven’t used Java for a while, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work well there too.

I feel very connected to the code.

zen21··on FTX Yikes
And pay a fee, just to change your keys. Remind me of the benefits of this system again?
zen21··on FTX Yikes
You’d probably like ApplePay. A great payment flow and the protections of being able to charge back or rectify problems.

Also, no need to deal with insane price fluctuations and collapsing exchanges impacting the price of pizza.

Why ‘must’ it?

Nor will ~1B of the rest.

Yes, by acquiring new customers who then buy further products and services.

It could also just be sold as a service, or an addition to iCloud+.

zen21··on Key staff driving Apple search engine leave to rejoin Google
For Apple it could just be a customer acquisition cost.
zen21··on The Sam Bankman-Fried empire crumbled. What happened?
I guess we now know that A-OK just means one day away from declaring bankruptcy.
zen21··on FTX tapped into customer accounts to fund risky bets, setting up its downfall
It seems like you believe that trusting anyone is stupid.

How do they plan to avoid violence when there are betrayals of trust?

And was fine afterwards.

Luckily in many cases this is in fact not “on you”, but rather is a crime, or is subject to civil litigation depending on the nature of the fraud in question. This helps to avoid instances of retributive violence, which is the general solution when a legal system isn’t available.
zen21··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Clubhouse lost its shine on its own. It simply didn’t scale on a social level and became a cesspool of crypto scams and conspiracy theorists looking for marks.
zen21··on FTX tapped into customer accounts to fund risky bets, setting up its downfall
What about if you buy something you thought you understood, but that’s only because you were lied to?
zen21··on Mastodon’s eternal September begins?
Why would Google defederating be worse than how things are now? Gmail users are not currently on mastodon anyway and things are fine.
zen21··on The End of the Road to Serfdom
You seem to overlook the fact that Europe became dependent on Russian Energy against the wishes of the US.

You also seem to have selected an unrepresentative set of scare headlines.

Gas prices are in fact plunging in Europe, and the winter is turning out to be unexpectedly mild.

This supposed economic ‘suicide’ seems more like something that exists only in the mind of Vladimir Putin.

You also may not be aware that in the 1940’s Europe experienced war on their own territory. I am surprised you haven’t considered that they have their own reasons for wanting to disassociate themselves from Putin’s state.

They are either a vassal of the US, or they are not. Clearly, since they only do what the US wants when it suits them, there is no serious argument to be made that they are a vassal.

zen21··on The End of the Road to Serfdom
Economic repercussions of Covid and Putin’s war are to be expected and not ‘suicide’. Reliance on Russian energy was something the US strongly disapproved of.
zen21··on The End of the Road to Serfdom
Europe seems surprisingly alive for someone who has committed ‘suicide’.
