Where I'm from we drink tap water with no filter etc.
food, water, bedding, the ability to keep it safe, vaccines(they're pretty cheap mostly and often done by animal shelters for free--neutering too).
There are so many pets in shelters who could live good happy lives but no one is there to adopt them.
Better a pet to live with an owner who cant afford their chemo when theyre 14 years old than to be euthanized at 2 years old.
My childhood dog had cancer and ended up having a seizure in my arms. Later I buried him myself.
Being there for him and burying him myself gave me a lot of closure and I'm proud I was able to be his friend and give him a good life.
However aside from that R is vastly inferior.
Social pressure/not yet fully formed brain etc. leads to ppl under 21 being more likely to drive drunk. That's the rationale for not being able to drink until 21.
"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that minimum drinking age laws have saved more than 31,000 lives from 1975 to 2017"

The linked article says this was a trial in 2001. Only 1 school did it and it seemed to go well, but no other schools were willing to try it.
I'm not excusing his tone btw just explaining.
Discord to function like an IRC chat and a Wiki to store the important information on the topic of the forum.
Many of my friends also don't have social media and we all exist within a discord server and share our lives and game together very often.
Discord has this buy in like a social media platform for a lot of people.
It's what I've described above--plus communities moving to discord and away from reddit.
If you do an online game now you will end up on discord if you're even halfway serious about the game.
One of the big things discord has allowed for my friend group is it's the first platform like this that has brought in the "normies". People who would never visit a forum and didn't even know teamspeak or ventrilo ever existed.
It's a smooth experience at almost all times on desktop and mobile.
If you go to college nowadays most of the majors have discords--and study groups have discords.
My friends don't even text me anymore, they DM me on discord and have for years at this point.
I also haven't done the switch, but consider getting into a physical hobby AND also perhaps switching to a lower hours less stress role in your current field that will free you up to spend more time on your hobby.
I worked manual labor through high school and most of college. Be careful of a job that has repetitive motions that can cause you overuse injures. They're very common in the 50+ crowd in the blue collar area I'm from.
Good luck!
Good luck seriously in finding new and more quality friends! You'll find some!
The only thing that can compete with it for productivity in the science space is R.
Myself and a few of my friends drive exclusively Honda/Toyota and drive them to 200k and then sell them to people who know how to do their own car work.
A few of my friends are from well off families and they buy cars brand new and drive them to 60-80k and then act like the car isnt reliable anymore for some reason despite the fact that I usually buy my car with 60-80k miles on it.
* all distance here is miles sorry for confusion
In the USA we had opposite plans during this time. Unlimited talk/text, but strict data caps.
It's possible that I am hilariously underpaid and need a new job.
A common American complaint is "subsidizing" European defense off of our tax dollars.
America is also a big spread out place so maintaining it is more expensive than small Euro countries.
On my first point, I think we get a rather strategic advantage from being the "Western" police. However I'm just explaining a common critique you'll hear.
The US is huge.
I work in the Southeast. Where I'm working Junior SWEs start around 60k. Mid Level Start Around 75k. Senior start around 95k. Manager/Our new "Super Senior" level start around 120k.
Our cost of living is still higher than yours. In my area a 3 bed/2 bath home with a small yard within 1 hour drive of my work costs 450k minimum and that would be a full hour out and the siding would be vinyl.
We have horrible public services, many of us are in debt to have obtained our CS degrees, child care is soo expensive, healthcare is crazy expensive even after we get our employer healthcare plans. Going to a local soccer match costs me $50 for nosebleed tickets, a beer is $14, and nachos are $15. Parking costs me $25 at the game and you have to pay for gas here too which is close to $5 a gallon(but keep in mind we drive further, to EVERYTHING, and owning a car is a requirement unless you're in NYC or SF).
I just want to represent for what is probably the majority of US SWE's.
They can recruit very good software engineers out of the Southeast & Midwest for under 170k just fine. It's still going to cost them 6 figures, but they are going to be able to hire good talent.
I will admit though, they're going to have trouble retaining the tippy top of the seniority ladder at 170k.
I worked full time thru college for bad pay and still needed 30k in student loans to make it out with my degree. I went to a state school, nothing fancy.
I hardly ever had fun in college, it was awful. The working world is waaaaaaay better for me.
Not everyone who has loan debt just partied away on borrowed cash.
