yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Smart people don't think others are stupid
I think it's a question of internalization. When you have internalized the correct way to think about it, it feels obvious. And wrong ways to think about it seem absurd. We stand on the shoulders of giants, Plato being one of them. We have internalized their philosophy. And that's why it feels idiotic.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Worlds more habitable than Earth?
The closer to lightspeed you get the more shit you would collide with. I think you would reach an equilibrium speed where drag balances thrust?
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Sharing AI progress in mathematics
We don't give mathematicians research positions to solve crosswords for fun. We want something back. We want theories and results that will advance our civilization.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Loss of cell identity drives human aging: Two new papers
> How would a fitness reducing mutation become a feature of a genetic line in the first place in asexual reproduction?

A random mutation. Especially when combined with the founder effect or some other genetic bottlenecking.

yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Loss of cell identity drives human aging: Two new papers
Let me rephrase to be more neutral. Imagine two genetic lines. Both lines have one bad mutation. Survivable, but makes the individual less fit. With asexual reproduction evolution has to pick one or the other. With sexual it can get rid of both.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Loss of cell identity drives human aging: Two new papers
Sexual reproduction can remove bad mutations. Imagine two parents. One has bad mutations m1. Other has bad mutation m2. They have three children. The first gets only m2. The second gets both and dies. The third inherits neither.

Even though neither parent was fully healthy, one of the children was. Asexual reproduction cannot do this.

yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Colorectal Cancer Is Rising Among the Young, Even Kids and Teens
The current paradigm of change something and wait half a century to see if it caused or prevented cancer is ridiculous. We can do better. Look at proxies and early warning signs. Do intervention and look at something like cellular aging, DNA damage, cell death rate ( renewal requires cell division which is error prone). Bring the feedback loop down to a year and maybe we can make some progress.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on There's a spike in Bitcoin activity around the time foreign aid money goes out
Even if the money is used completely legitimately it will be exchanged for goods and services thus ending up in someone's pocket. Someone who may want to buy Bitcoin.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Oxygen-deprived underwater zones may not be “dead zones” but clue to early life
There is a saying: you can't step into the same river twice. And I wonder if these pools aren't the same. Like there is constant mixing, but some other force maintains the conditions of the pool. Those particular water molecules and sodium ions haven't been there for a thousand years but were gradually replaced. That's my guess, anyway.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Cloud Agents Are Inevitable AI Prisons
My comment did not concern that particular incident, which I do not defend, but rather future incidents.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Cloud Agents Are Inevitable AI Prisons
Punishing people who are diligent and follow best practices for getting unlucky doesn't sit right with me.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
> What use does an AI and robots have for all those resources?

Converting the universe to computronium or something maybe?

yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
It's easier to evaluate certainly. Did it solve the problem? Yes/No

When you design a new thing it will have a dozen drawbacks and a dozen and one benefits. If people then have a bias that everything ai is bad, the signal won't be strong enough to convince.

yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
If your job required you to sleep 8h a night would that make it less restorative?
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
Coffee is sold in cans yes. Very popular in Japan. Elsewhere... I think I saw Starbucks cans? Or was it bottles?
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
Opposition to energy drinks seems like a moral panic to me. Like I don't see anyone calling for bans on coffee and Irish coffee.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Hunter-gatherers introduced fish to a mountain lake 7000 years ago
One possibility for fish eggs getting to lakes I want to propose is extreme weather. Winds can move sand from side of earth to the other. Flooding. Tornadoes.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on CipherX applies painless permanent tattoos with dissolving microneedle patches
What I imagine is drunk youngsters tattooing a dick on the forehead of their passed out friend as a prank.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on SpaceX stock erases all its gains and slides below IPO price in intraday trading
His point is that sellers can do whatever suits their interests best, they don't have a duty to pick a fair price. And that it's on the buyer to decide whether to accept it or reject the price.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Factories are just rooms
A word I heard a lot some decade ago but never anymore: social construction.

But I think it fits incredibly well here. A factory is just a social constructions. A room where everyone agrees something is produced.

yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
You gotta take entropy into account too. Sunshine is high grade energy, infrared is low grade. Reflecting high grade energy is a huge waste. You could even (in theory) run a solar powered space-ir-dumper and end up with net cooling of earth.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on I am giving up on VM Gaming
Wouldn't it make more sense to use igpu for host than two discrete ones?
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on NYT and vaping: How to lie by saying only true things (2022)
If I tell a lie to support a good cause and you tell a lie to support the same cause and a third and a fourth person do the same thing then, then, being so propped up by lies how can we be sure it even is a good cause worth lying for?

In this way, the harms of lying compound while the benefits do not. For this reason I believe it highly unwise to allow it to be normalized.

yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on Bun's experimental Rust rewrite hits 99.8% test compatibility on Linux x64 glibc
The right to be suspicious of the motives of powerful people is infinitely more important than protecting their feelings from being hurt by suspicion.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on IPv6 is the only way forward
That's similar to, but not exactly what we were discussing. In particular 6in4 has a full ipv6 header after the ipv4 header, but here the suggestion was instead that supplementary infomation would follow. For example, the most significant address bits could be stored in the ipv4 header and the least significant ones in the new part.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on IPv6 is the only way forward
The protocol field in the ipv4 header seems like a reasonable choice. A value would be associated for ipv6 and if that value is chosen then additional header data follows the ipv4 header.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on A pig's brain has been frozen with its cellular activity locked in place
It is half true in that they can modify their epigenetics.
yrjrjjrjjtjjr··on The purpose of Continuous Integration is to fail
The purpose of a car's crumple zone is to crumple.
