ypeterholmes··on Insured, but Still Owing $109K for a Heart Attack
Our system is an ongoing tragedy.
ypeterholmes··on Netflix is the latest company to try bypassing Apple’s app store
They also often get their own rules. I've designed apps that onboard exactly like the big boys, and been rejected.
ypeterholmes··on Getting close to 40, mid life crisis, depression, and finding release
Sounds like you need to identify some activities that bring you joy and satisfaction, and then pursue them more aggressively.
ypeterholmes··on NFL Releases Finite Element Helmet Models
But the helmets themselves are still hard as can be. Honest question: why not replace a traditional style of helmet with a larger, inflated style bubble that in addition to protecting the head, would not itself produce any sort of large impact force?
ypeterholmes··on 'My £1,000 Macbook Air was stolen at airport security and no one cares'
Certainly the story here is about the negligence of Airport Security, but let this also be a lesson to the girl about backing up your work to the cloud.
ypeterholmes··on How a Medical Catastrophe Can Bankrupt a Life
Insurance companies are the problem. Single payer + Universal Healthcare is the answer because it will eliminate insurance companies from the equation and get us back towards actual cost and remove this threat that hangs over all of us.
ypeterholmes··on When are Lyft and Uber going to add a “refund” button within their app?
This isn't just a $5 issue. My friend had a driver start a ride without her in the car, and then kept it going as they drove multiple hours to the tune of $650. The whole time we were trying to stop it but there was no option. Months of tweeting and emailing and calling later, they weren't budging. It wasn't until I started a Reddit thread asking why Lyft allows drivers to scam riders that they finally relented and refunded the money. Customer service!
ypeterholmes··on What Bitcoin shows us about how money works
Well said. I was also struck by the author's core argument- that Bitcoin will never be stable because nobody can manipulate its value. Seems to me the opposite is true; the fact that nobody can directly manipulate supply will provide the type of stability our current fiat currency sorely lacks.
ypeterholmes··on Modern Media Is a DoS Attack on Free Will
Blaming technology for our dysfunctional political system is all kinds of backwards. The political system is broken because of corruption within our financial/judicial/media institutions. If anything, technology is our best hope to fix those problems. For example, look at this discussion we are having right here.
ypeterholmes··on Washington Post integrates Talk – Mozilla’s open-source commenting platform
Ok got it. Yeah I'm definitely in favor of folks trying new things like Mozilla and WaPo are. We can only be as intelligent as the conversations we hold with each other.
ypeterholmes··on Washington Post integrates Talk – Mozilla’s open-source commenting platform
That comment section looks terrible. For one thing- the fact you even needed to tell us how to find them? Second, what's innovative there? I can't even collapse threads.
ypeterholmes··on Marijuana use holds three-fold blood pressure death risk: study
Because the whole thing is bunk. Correlation does not mean causation.
ypeterholmes··on Declassified memos show FBI illegally shared spy data with private parties
This is what a broken system looks like- the people are no longer represented, and corruption has no check or balance. Question is, what do we do about it?

Side note: it would be foolish to think that these two things are not related. The motivations for removing our civil rights dovetail with the goals for keeping us under control.

ypeterholmes··on Redesigning Apple Music after Being Rejected
Why they made the scrubber the size of a pinpoint is beyond me. Good thing I can see the artwork though, which I don't care about AT ALL because I'm LISTENING TO MUSIC
ypeterholmes··on Why Facebook Keeps Beating Every Rival: It’s the Network
Put differently, the truth is actually the opposite of what this article argues: the vast size of Facebook's network is the biggest threat to their existence. Many people I know are ditching facebook because its become too large a social graph- why would I post something edgy to a network that includes my parents?
ypeterholmes··on To Build a Better Ballot
Good piece but seems remiss to have this discussion without also acknowledging the ways in which our electoral system + a complete lack of transparency are also undermining confidence in the system. It's 2017 yet somehow people are waiting 10 hours in line to vote? And then there's no way to verify that your vote counted?
ypeterholmes··on The Effect of State Marijuana Legalizations
Exactly. By skipping over the huge $$$ profits this article reveals itself to be pretty disingenuous.
ypeterholmes··on Streetfoto founder Ken Walton arrested at gunpoint
It's absolutely insane how quick and willing the police are to use lethal force. It's a systemic problem and an ongoing national tragedy. To fix it we need cameras on every single officer and a complete institutional overhaul where basic procedures are reworked and violations are dealt with aggressively. Too many officers currently see zero repercussions for this type of illegal behavior, and it tears apart the social fabric of our communities.
ypeterholmes··on When a crow dies, the other crows investigate the cause of death (2015)
Nightmare material right there.
ypeterholmes··on How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds
Also no mention of politics, despite going on at length about the 'illusions of freedom'. Granted, going there would force an admission that the world just kinda works like this all around.
ypeterholmes··on The internet has been stolen from you. Take it back, nonviolently
To piggyback on this, any strategy that requires competing with these established private web companies is doomed to fail. People will not choose a lesser service for moral reasons. Rather, as you indicate, the key to keeping things beneficial to the community at large will be through political power.

So we don't need another facebook. We need digital tools that organize meaningful political power in an effort to re-establish a government for and by the people.

ypeterholmes··on Facebook is King, Other Networks Fight for Scraps
Seems remiss not to include reddit in this analysis no?
ypeterholmes··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
The issue here boils down to process. Turn-key solutions like Wix have sprung up to cater the low hanging fruit. For everything else, the diversification of our digital lives across web and mobile devices have forced new interactive constraints on the traditional graphic design process, meaning its print media process foundations are no longer workable. Rather, the modern design process has to be much more agile and interactive than a flat design file can allow. The result is that we now have programmers trying to design, and designers trying to program.

But it's a short term problem, because design software with interactive and adaptive tools are being constructed to help designers accommodate the new constraints and allow them back into the process.

ypeterholmes··on The Weird Thing About Cat Legs
Still didn't quite capture it:

"When animals get bigger, their posture changes. Their legs tend to straighten, becoming stiffer and more pillar-like to better support their weight. Not so with cats. When a lion strides across the savannah, it has essentially the same posture as the domesticated tabby that slinks over your lap. Lions, tigers, and leopards—oh my—are, as Hutchinson writes, the only large, crouching mammals."

However I agree this article could have been a tweet.

ypeterholmes··on SoundCloud Will Be Worth More Than Spotify
Exactly. Between solid tech and a massive userbase, Soundcloud once had the monumental opportunity suggested in the article. But they have played their cards quite poorly which means this article is ridiculous.
ypeterholmes··on Judge: Drinking tea, shopping at garden store probable cause for SWAT raid
Agreed. However I wonder if this information age will change that? For example Netflix's "Making a Murderer" MUST yield some sort of fallout against that local department. Right? At the very least, I will be avoiding Wisconsin.
ypeterholmes··on Dropbox ignores user's complaints of poor performance for almost a year
On my macbook pro Google Drive has improved but still causes trouble and generally runs much slower than dropbox, which has always run flawlessly.
ypeterholmes··on Ask HN: How do you track issues, todos, features?
We use redmine for development ticket tracking and basecamp client side.
ypeterholmes··on f.lux for iOS is no longer available
Solution: hire them and include as an improved system setting. Obviously people want this.
ypeterholmes··on What Politicians Believe About Their Constituents: Asymmetric Misperceptions [pdf]
Interestingly? Seems this undermines the entire paper, because it's not that they don't know, but rather that they don't care.

Most don't serve us anymore- they serve the people that put them there.
