ypeterholmes··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
The current situation in the US is the depressing thing- articles like this give me hope. Real Americans aren't having these BS authoritarian violations of our constitutional rights.
ypeterholmes··on alpr.watch
Any change in behavior? Is that a joke? Setting aside the masked men terrorizing our communities, immigrants are being literally tortured inside camps across the country. They are being treated worse than criminals- tortured. Abused. What's happening right now is horrific, and the dehumanization propaganda can only be compared to Hitler's vilification of the jews.
ypeterholmes··on alpr.watch
Nah, it's your support for lawless authoritarianism because you think it will improve your safety- that's the part you missed in history class. That's the con you are falling for. The truth is that once authoritarianism takes hold, nobody is safe. Many Germans who thought the Nazi's would only target "bad people" learned this the hard way.
ypeterholmes··on alpr.watch
Setting aside their lawlessness, it sounds like we agree they are unidentifiable, meaning their identity is a secret. So they are a secret police. And you support that for some reason, maybe because you haven't read a single history book.
ypeterholmes··on alpr.watch
Then why are they wearing masks?
ypeterholmes··on alpr.watch
If you think authoritarianism will lead to order and peace, you're gonna have a bad time. The presence of a secret police is already causing wide scale violation of our constitutional rights.
ypeterholmes··on Meta is spending $10B in rural Louisiana to build its largest data center
These things destroy local communities. But none of the locals have access to the fuhr
ypeterholmes··on ICE is getting unprecedented access to Medicaid data
They have already detained many citizens. They are not following our standard laws.
ypeterholmes··on MCP is eating the world
How does it sell a basic protocol that anyone can use?
ypeterholmes··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Liquid glass is gorgeous. But it's hard to reconcile next level design like this with complete disasters like Apple TV. Maybe spend some time on getting the fundamentals right too, before inventing the future
ypeterholmes··on The Einstein AI Model
As I noted, this post is saying AI can't achieve "genius" level creativity. Just a year ago the criticisms were that it couldn't match a human. How is that not moving the goalposts?
ypeterholmes··on The Einstein AI Model
Hey look, the goalposts are being moved again. This time it's from top end researcher to generational genius. Question: what evidence is there that this benchmark will not be reached also? Time and again these essays make the mistake of assuming AI is a static thing, and refuse to acknowledge the inexorable march forward we are witnessing. As humans, we cling to our own fragile superiority. Even on this thread- I thought Hinton said the world would be transformed by now. That's NOT what was claimed. We are like three years in! Posts like this will be laughable in 10 years.
ypeterholmes··on Generative AI Hype Peaking
So Deep Research and the latest reasoning models don't deserve mention here? I wish there was accountability on the internet, so that people posting stuff like this can be held accountable a year from now.
ypeterholmes··on Jeep owners fed up with in-car pop-up ads
Advertising has gotten out of control. What's bizarre to me is that the people violating us are literally the ones who want something from us. Is there no way to boycott anyone advertising in our car? AND the car itself of course.

What does that mean?

Typo: "Your pay your taxes into the system"

Sorry to be this way.

ypeterholmes··on Artificial intelligence is losing hype
Awesome comment. I've written a piece here about the relationship between AI and human consciousness. Would love some feedback if you're able. Thanks! https://peterholmes.medium.com/the-conscious-computer-af5037...

PS. I'm buying your book right now.

ypeterholmes··on Ask HN: Should we bring software dev in-house?
You are asking two different questions here. In house vs contractors is one. The second is whether you should be using a third party product.

My advice would be to continue using contractors, but different ones, and focus their attention on building a better product.

ypeterholmes··on In a new book, Christof Koch views consciousness as a theorist and an aficionado
I was basing my number on Wolfram's work here: https://writings.stephenwolfram.com/2023/02/what-is-chatgpt-...

"In human brains there are about 100 billion neurons (nerve cells), each capable of producing an electrical pulse up to perhaps a thousand times a second."

So maybe that's wrong. Thanks for the links. Even so if we look out 10, 100, 200 years from now, that level of complexity will be greatly surpassed by AI.

ypeterholmes··on In a new book, Christof Koch views consciousness as a theorist and an aficionado
No? The human brain has ~100 billion neurons and ~1 trillion connection weights. Google’s PaLM uses ~540 Billion nodes with ~100 trillion connection weights.

And the key point is this- these models are the worst they will ever be, and are gaining size at pace. So even if you we grant the argument that our brains are still a bit more complex, hopefully we can agree that will not be the case in 5 years. Heck, how about 20 years, or 100? Let's be real.

ypeterholmes··on In a new book, Christof Koch views consciousness as a theorist and an aficionado
That's precisely my point. The database connections involved in a neural network are the corollary, not transistors. What am I missing?
ypeterholmes··on In a new book, Christof Koch views consciousness as a theorist and an aficionado
The machines will be much faster than us, and soon. So what's your point?
ypeterholmes··on In a new book, Christof Koch views consciousness as a theorist and an aficionado
“The high connectivity [in a human brain] is very different from that found in the central processing unit of any digital computer, where one transistor typically connects to a handful of other transistors.”

Has he been living under a rock? Modern AI models already outpace the connectivity of the human brain, and are only getting bigger.

ypeterholmes··on LLMs will not automate work
Based on what though? You can't just say things, you have to provide a basis for why.
ypeterholmes··on LLMs will not automate work
Where in the article does the author justify their core thesis, that LLM's will not automate work? The only argument I see is that it hasn't happened yet, which is hardly the same thing.

(The irony is that they continually criticize others for not supporting their arguments.)

ypeterholmes··on Humane execs leave company to found AI fact-checking startup
"no disagreement = fact" What? This is objectively wrong.

"the left is generally more passionate about politics and power" What? This is objectively wrong.

"People are pretty good at agreeing on facts already" What? This is objectively wrong.

ypeterholmes··on Humane execs leave company to found AI fact-checking startup
I'm curious- what's their strategy for determining what's true? Is it an Orwellian setup where certain media organizations (eg. NYT, Reuters, Wikipedia) are deemed to be an authoritative ministry of truth?
ypeterholmes··on A Model of a Mind
Not seeing your email, so I'll post here. I wrote up a similar theory of consciousness here: https://peterholmes.medium.com/the-conscious-computer-af5037...

In particular, I think there's a nice overlap between my description of self-awareness and yours. You mention a model capable of seeing its own output, but I take it a step further and indicate model capable of generating its own simulated actions and results. Curious what you think, thanks!

ypeterholmes··on Is artificial consciousness achievable? Lessons from the human brain
You're making this harder than it needs to be. Things that have self awareness via an internal world map can be considered conscious, meaning self aware. A rock has no such mechanism. Most animals including humans do.
