yew··on An almost catastrophic OpenZFS bug and the humans that made it
> I am well past the point in my life where I engage with that sort of noise in any good faith[.]

One must certainly agree that there's no point engaging with this in good faith.

yew··on The world of Japan's PC-98 computer
Nah. The people writing racist fanfiction on AO3 are equally beardy, and those are mostly women. It's just the standard weirdos/creeps problem.
yew··on Congress passes Take It Down act despite major flaws
Fictional things can't lose elections, silly.

"And absolute power is kind of neat."

Evidence is socially constructed. It's the view of the public that neckbeards and debate-bros should be expunged. This isn't a debate.
yew··on I heard the full story of the woman jailed for two years for a tweet
Sounds like Pearson here needs a few years to cool off, reconsider getting involved with this kind of provocative troublemaking.
yew··on Meritocracy doesn't exist and believing it does is bad for you (2019)
Ah, sorry for the confusion. I'm not advocating group solidarity.

("Group" and "solidarity" are such fuzzily broad terms. But I think, not in the sense you intend. Real humans are, of course, social creatures.)

yew··on Meritocracy doesn't exist and believing it does is bad for you (2019)
Meritocracy isn't real and hard work doesn't work, but there are lots of real factors under your control. Vote in your own best interest. Get involved in politics. Favor class, gender, ethnic interests. Sharpen your social skills.

That's a real internal locus of control. Shaping society is just another job, and a lot more rewarding to learn.

Get out, touch grass, do real things, meet real people, help your friends, let them help you. (Confound your enemies.)

yew··on Hey Democrats, wake the f–k up
"No, John. You are the neckbeards." And then John was an incel.
yew··on "Big 3" science fiction magazines including Asimov's and Analog acquired
I think we should probably ban reading old books. They seem to infect people with bad ideas.
yew··on Men overestimate women's preference for masculinity
> "How Americans edit sex out of my writing"

Reading, I would say that the author isn't really "European" but rather a sex pest trying to sell an American audience the exoticism of "Europe."

(See Neil Gaiman and the rest of that gang for recent more specificity.)

The representation isn't genuine but assumed. I'm not sure you picked the best example.

yew··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
(Unsafety and fear always motivate silence and action. You might expect certain people to understand that better than most.)
yew··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Not particularly. The matter is no longer up for discussion. Silence and action are best.
yew··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Hm. I see them as connected - "we must confront our problems domestically before we fight them abroad."
yew··on The Internet Is Killing Science Too
> The progressive left’s recent deviation into science-mongering is so hot and heavy with irony that it can be difficult to hold onto it long enough for serious examination. We may at least say that it represents desperation, and a tragic descent into dogmatism. It’s always been hard for our Editorial Board at least to hear “Trust the Science” as demanding anything other than: “Trust us”. If asked why one should do so, the only truly plausible answer is the one that none who mouth this phrase could ever actually give: “Trust the science because we are the ones in power, or because it is through our claims to a knowledge-monopoly that we hope to retain power, or better to secure it.”

> We may imagine that it was in some measure this intervention on ALC’s part that led some months later to that similarly acronymous New York woman-to-watch AOC’s removal, just this past week, of the pronouns from her social-media bios. We doubt this removal will lead to any confusion or social faux-pas, as we presume that more or less everyone has the “trained judgment” necessary to “sex” AOC as she would prefer.

Whoever wrote this is a truly towering idiot.

yew··on They don't make readers like they used to
Everyone who ever read that stuff needs the Larry Garfield treatment...
yew··on They don't make readers like they used to
Meh. The neckbeards deserve it.
yew··on The muscular imagination of Iain M. Banks: a future you might want
He collected the cars and wrote about the (non-fictional) drugs. He wasn't an exhibitionist, as far as I know, so you'll have to infer what you like about the middle one from his writing.

yew··on The muscular imagination of Iain M. Banks: a future you might want
Banks had very "fast cars, chicks, and drugs" tastes - a "bro" if you will - and much of his work is basically James Bond stories. I'm not sure the fans are surprising.

yew··on Disney seeks dismissal of wrongful death lawsuit citing waiver in Disney+ terms
The most important lesson of the 2010s is that neckbeards and g*mers whine online, but they can't stop paying.
yew··on The Weird Nerd comes with trade-offs
The neckbeards are leaking again. Someone go beat them with a spanner.
yew··on What Happened to the New Internet?
This seems rather confused.

The author writes about the movement to remove tech bros, but then also about the "independent web" - a movement certainly made up at least substantially of neckbeards and tech bros. How do these fit together? It isn't discussed. It's always seemed that the antagonism between the two was more irresolvable than resolved.

Perhaps the author is himself a tech bro, and so unable to examine himself?

yew··on The Supreme Court Will Set an Important Precedent for Free Speech Online
Who cares about frozen fruit? Sheer irrelevance.
yew··on Florida House of Representatives approves bill to ban social media for kids < 16
There are degrees of enforceability.

When I was first getting online, the expectation was that you at least had to be bright enough to lie about your age. Now I have to occasionally prune my timeline after it fills up with "literally a minor." Even an annoyance tax might have some positive effect. Scare the pastel death-threats back into their hole...

yew··on [dead]
Probably worth noting that the linked article claims that "Israel [...] its now-clear slaughter of many, perhaps most, of the Israeli victims on the day of the raid."

Whoever wrote this definitely deserves to be (permanently) de-banked and subject to the full force of the law. And I'd cheer other things besides...
