yarou··on Harassment at Apple: A personal perspective
Let's be honest here, we both know what you were doing. I'm surprised the mods tolerate this type of virtue signaling and inflammatory behavior. You're clearly trying to bait the person you're responding to.

And you're not even doing it correctly. Gendered pronouns in general shouldn't be used. Please use "Xir" or "Zhe" when referring to a group of individuals whose sex may be female, but whose gender identity is unknown.

The H1B visa system needs to be overhauled or done away with entirely. It's truly sickening to see how we as a society tolerate indentured servitude in the 21st century.

Companies use the system to purposefully depress wages. It needs to end.

A lot of people underestimate the anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of cannabinoids like CBD and CBN.
yarou··on Does It Make Sense for Programmers to Move to the Bay Area?
Interesting reply, it seems you've misconstrued the intent of my post.

I was merely sharing my observation that certain areas in the South Bay tend to have more stuff to do (i.e. a downtown). Not sure why you took that as me denigrating parents and families. Perhaps I was being vague.

I agree that culture is something, as you put it, that is kept inside of us. However, people don't exist in a vaccum. We are very much influenced by the environment we live in. Most people don't exist in a cultural vacuum where they don't interact with the larger cultural forces in their environment.

My (admittedly anecdotal) experience has been that the South Bay is primarily a work culture. Having lived both in SF and the South Bay, I can tell you that both are offering very different answers for the same question, regardless of whether or not you are single, married, or have kids.

yarou··on Does It Make Sense for Programmers to Move to the Bay Area?
I think it comes down to culture.

The culture of the South Bay is relatively non-existent outside of small pockets like Palo Alto, Los Gatos, Mountain view, and maybe Santana Row. It's geared toward raising kids and family life in general.

yarou··on Containerd – An open and reliable container runtime, by Docker
Thanks for the link, that's a pretty neat project.

I'm not a huge fan of Docker's runtime because it tends to be rather sluggish. I haven't used it in quite a while, though.

yarou··on Tech worker resistance is crucial to preventing human rights abuses in the U.S
IMO, you'd be solving the wrong problem. The real problem that needs to be solved is licensing software engineers. This comes with the added benefit of standardizing competence. If lawyers and doctors need licensing, why shouldn't we also have a licensing body for software engineers? Then you get the ethics enforcement for free.
yarou··on Imzy wants to be a kinder, gentler version of Reddit
> "Be Nice" policies tends to lead to communities that lack this useful sociological immune system, and it can drive out the smart people, to the point where you have a lot of "nice" people arguing some very dumb points.

I think you've touched on a very important point. There is a huge difference between enforcing "niceness" and civility. The latter allows for the organic and authentic discussion of ideas, while the former doesn't.

yarou··on Amazon workers sleeping in tents
Yeah, it's not the company's fault, they should continue to pay below market wages and collude with other tech companies to artificially depress wages[1].

yarou··on I am not a self-made man
In the long run, Democratic Republics favor loosely associated blocs of power, mainly in the form of corporations. The wealthy in Europe probably didn't like it very much when fascists and communists came to power.

Any type of centrally planned economy is an anethema to those who have saved massive sums of capital.

yarou··on Mr. Robot Killed the Hollywood Hacker
It's coding for its own sake, much like how art isn't useful in the traditional sense.
yarou··on Mr. Robot Killed the Hollywood Hacker
Have you actually seen any of Terry's streams? They're actually quite instructive about topics like OS design. Barring the occasional rants against "CIA ni*".
yarou··on Mr. Robot Killed the Hollywood Hacker
Rami Malek really kills it in the first season IMO. Especially the opiate withdrawal scene.

Also minor nit - I'm pretty sure Tyrell's wife is aware of his escapades. But you're missing the point about it...Tyrell and his wife are concerned solely with power.

yarou··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
Speaking of reconfiguration, why not buff the controversy penalty instead of outright banning political discussion?

Couldn't you also enable an enhanced slow mode on threads that seem political in nature? Maybe something like the "hate tax" system proposed here[1].

I feel as though political topics tend to generate a knee-jerk response in people, especially when they are in an...shall we say, altered state of mind. The more controversial a topic is, the slower the pace of discussion should be IMHO. Exponentially so.

yarou··on “There is no justifiable reason to be working 100+ hours a week."
I find it strange that in certain tech shops, the measure of your productivity is not efficiency, but how many hours you spend physically in the office.

Doesn't this select for inefficient and incompetent employees?

yarou··on No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problems
The assumption implicit in your argument is that the relationship is equal (as in the case of a boyfriend/girlfriend). I'm not sure that same assumption holds for a parent and a child, as much as the media tells you otherwise.

yarou··on "Solaris being canned, at least 50% of teams to be RIF'd in short term"
Solaris had some neat integration with Java, containerization way before lxc, and DTrace which still lives on.

The reason I think it didn't rise to ubiquity in the same way that Linux did is the lack of customization.

One can easily customize the Linux kernel for their use case (i.e. Embedded), compile it, add busybox/dropbear, and you have a decent starting point for an embedded OS. You couldn't do the same with Solaris.

yarou··on The Magician of Manga
Allow me to gather my thoughts for a moment.

In the West, we are obsessed with the arrow of time. Storytelling in the West is typically concerned with getting characters from point A to point B. The space of the story is of secondary importance to the one way flow of time. The here and now is of central importance.

This is not the case in Eastern cultures. Japanese culture has been heavily influenced by Vedic religions, as well Shintoism and Taoism.

A central concept of Vedic religions is Samsara[1], which can be thought of as a cyclical view of the universe. Time itself is merely an illusion, because ultimately the same cycle of birth, sustainence, and death is repeated infinitely.

That's why space is the focal point in manga. As another commenter stated, certain events are happening in the present. But the next scene may have non-linearly taken place in the future, or perhaps in the past, or even with no reference to the current time period. What ties everything together is the common space.

I've always been curious about the type of embedded OS that ATMs and ticket kiosks use. Most of the time, it seems to be an unpatched version of Windows.

Does anyone know what the SFMTA runs on their kiosks?

yarou··on Fidel Castro has died
Wholeheartedly agree with you. I consider myself to be on the left, in the classical sense, but the political discourse of the United States does not tolerate multi-faceted and nuanced opinions about the issues.

The groupthink is prevalent on both sides of the aisle - you're either on my team or you're on the other. What sucks is when you're ostracized from both.

yarou··on Married to someone with anxiety
The latest treatment protocols for anxiety seem to have shifted from GABA receptor agonists to SSRIs and supplements like folic acid[1].

The jury is still out on how effective these treatments are compared to CBT. I'd be curious about how physicians subjectively feel about prescribing benzos to their patients.
