yarou··on Cerebro App – Open-source productivity booster with a brain
It's Spotlight++, even better with an NP-hard template system.
yarou··on Playing with Toys While People Are Dying
Do you remember when Medium was tanking? I do, in fact it's happening right now.
yarou··on Ask HN: How do you deal with loss of motivation?
Substituted phenethylamines for motivation.
yarou··on Cloudflare data still in Bing caches
Discuss them, sure.

But what does it really matter?

yarou··on Cloudflare data still in Bing caches
I summarized The Stranger a long time ago, with a remark I admit was highly paradoxical: 'In our society any man who does not weep at his mother's funeral runs the risk of being sentenced to death.' I only meant that the hero of my book is condemned because he does not play the game.

The comment from eastdakota seems to be political in nature; some on here have suggested he has an axe to grind with Google.

Why do humans politicize so much? That's one thing I'll never understand, and one of the reasons why I refuse to become a manager.

yarou··on 118 Uber employees in SF have resigned/put in notice since the weekend
Ironic that a man who once bragged how he could attain any woman's attention will now be ruined by it.
yarou··on Apple Park Opens to Employees in April
De Anza is nightmare to drive; biking is also a fun adrenaline rush because you have to dodge traffic.

Vallco/Stevens Creek will probably become more congested as a result of the new campus opening.

yarou··on The threat from within
You can categorize them as identity politics.

Which is what I was trying to get at - I don't think that identity politics are useful anymore in the modern age we live in.

What's inconsistent to me is if one accepts the moral superiority of one type of identity politics over another. Either you accept them all or you categorically deny them all.

yarou··on The threat from within
> White supremacy has entered the political discourse and it does not deserve equal time.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on feminism and black nationalism. Do you consider these viewpoints to be "morally equivalent" to white supremacy?

yarou··on The threat from within
"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."

Skepticism doesn't entail blocking out viewpoints you disagree with. You automatically lose an argument if you refuse to engage with your detractor.

yarou··on Last Page of The Great Gatsby (1997)
I still can't believe the people who defend Daisy's character. She's literally the definition of an evil human being.
yarou··on A US-born NASA scientist was detained at the border until he unlocked his phone
Let it happen to Thiel or Musk, see how quickly the procedure will be reversed.
yarou··on A glitch in the human psyche that equates repetition with truth
I'm reminded of the initial "processing" scene in The Master between Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix.

Hoffman's character repeatedly asks questions to Phoenix's character, inducing a hypnotic state. Repetition can also be used as a form of mind control.

yarou··on Posix Has Become Outdated (2016) [pdf]
I'm a little confused by the distinction. For example, if I use a framework that abstracts away pthreads from me, but still uses pthreads in its implementation of threading, is the application I write still POSIX-compliant?
yarou··on Microsoft Allowed to Sue U.S. Government Over E-mail Surveillance
True, but a judge's job is to interpret the Constitition.
yarou··on Tesla factory worker calls for a union: “We need to stand up for ourselves”
> Poor working conditions for one factory and saving the planet as a whole are different concerns.

I think that's contradictory. If you are setting out to save the world, but you can't improve factory conditions for your own workers, how have you shown the capability to save the world?

I'm reminded of having a strong AI agent that's given the condition "save humanity". That condition can be satisfied by having no humans on the planet to save.

yarou··on India floats the idea of a universal basic income
Sounds like living in a libertarian paradise. Except if you get stabbed and your doctor doesn't take your particular private healthcare plan. Then you bleed out while singing the praises of deregulation.
yarou··on You don't have to be a passionate programmer
Why is finding a good tech job like navigating through a maze these days?

You have to watch out for the most esoteric of traps.

yarou··on Green tea compound may halt molecular cause of often-fatal condition
It depends on the amount of tea you're using per L of water. One could steep 1 g of tea in 4 L of water, which is essentially drinking water.

"1 gallon of tea" provides very little information on the amount of tea used.

yarou··on Doom co-creator defends his code against ZeniMax copying accusations
Excuse my French, but what the fuck does "non-literal copying" mean?
yarou··on Uber C.E.O. To Leave Trump Advisory Council After Criticism
> If Bannon leaves then I suspect he would fall more in line with a typical Republican President.

How so? This was the same guy who ran on a platform that was the antithesis to the Republican establishment.

yarou··on Tech firms are departing from their see-no-evil stance on society and politics
The new requests for startups, particularly concerning news and democracy are good long-term solutions to help solve the problem.

In the short to medium term, I'm not sure.

yarou··on Tech firms are departing from their see-no-evil stance on society and politics
I don't like the fact that American society is becoming so heavily politicized. I have family members, cousins who are brother and sister, refusing to talk to each other because of this nonsense.

This needs to end.

yarou··on Trump’s Next Move on Immigration to Hit Closer to Home for Tech
While I don't agree with the travel ban, this is actually a sensible course of action. The H1B system needs a huge overhaul. The problem is that Trump is told by a so-called advisor that issue x is bad, and there isn't much thought given to the implementation of the solution to that problem.
yarou··on Elon Musk seeks “specific amendments” to recommend to Trump on immigration order
It's also a skill to engage with people you disagree with on certain issues, or even if you dislike them personally.

These are basic life skills people.

yarou··on Thoreau and Civil Disobedience [video]
"They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then they will have my dead body, but not my obedience."
yarou··on Succeeding Against the Odds Can Make You Sick
It's sort of implied in your comment that black Americans have the same access to the superficial perks the person you were responding to suggested.

Here's a simple thought experiment for you. If you took the starting rating, x, for a set of Americans, I think you'd find that whites have a higher initial starting rank than someone who's black or Hispanic. It's harder to climb the ladder when you start out on a lower position.

yarou··on Succeeding Against the Odds Can Make You Sick
I agree that people, regardless of race, can end up ranking pretty high on the ladder of Western society.

However, it's pretty disingenuous to suggest that everyone starts out in the same position on that ladder.

yarou··on New Study Finds Performance-Enhancing Drugs for Chess
I didn't mean orders of magnitude in the literal sense, otherwise I would have included my IQ.

Judging from the fact that you created your account recently and your first post ever is negative about Adderall suggests to me that you have an agenda.

I'm sorry Adderall fucked up your life bro, but spreading FUD about it does everyone a disservice, especially for those who want to get into cognitive enhancement.
