xyzxyz998··on Monospaced Programming Fonts with Ligatures
Crazy idea but i'd like to see a monospaced version of Comic Sans Neue. The proportional version is very well done.
xyzxyz998··on Monospaced Programming Fonts with Ligatures
Most popular terminals use VTE. VTE doesn't support ligatures if that helps narrow your search down.

xyzxyz998··on Bash-Snippets: A collection of small bash scripts for heavy terminal users
Some tools are for people who live in terminal but want to do things outside of computers- weather/currency/stock et al. May not be related to everyone.

But there are some tools which are compute related and I'd recommend everyone try once:

1) cheat. Total lifesaver. I used to backup my histories but I no longer do so since most commands I use have an example there.

2) qrify looks good, not sure how often i'll use.

About crypt: I'd suggest installing openssl and using tools in there. Crypto is hard to get right, not to dissuade anyone from trying to create but as an end user, always use something widely used.

So what's happening here? The parent made a reasonable comment, without flaming anybody. All his children give evidence for him (except one but they weren't able to downvote) and yet the parent is downvoted. Votes don't matter but I'm curious about drive-by-downvoting. What does that signify? Fanboyism?
xyzxyz998··on Tim Berners-Lee Officially Supports DRM in HTML
I would ask people to get off Chrome & GitHub. Chrome for future of browsing and github for future of development. There are wonderful (I'd dare and say better) alternatives very easily available.

Nice trick, Fx has that built int too!
xyzxyz998··on Microsoft's Calibri font is at the center of a political scandal in Pakistan
I'm glad we're talking about fonts because I have a question that I want to ask this audience-

How many of you insist on choosing your own fonts in your websites, rather than just specifying families? I can understand if the fonts you choose are fancy. But otherwise, as a power user who has set default fonts for various families carefuly, I dislike having to read stuff in any font except my own carefuly chosen ones.

I hope websites defered to users somehow on this.

xyzxyz998··on Hard Drive Cost per Gigabyte
Looks like windows does RAID (win 2000) and pooled storage (whs, win8). And you can setup particular folders for periodic backup and retrieve history.

But I'd like to be able to retrieve every single version for desired partitions/folders and the ability to store to cloud.

xyzxyz998··on Hard Drive Cost per Gigabyte
Windows does have file versions, I can go in properties and do this but I think you have to set it up. I like your idea and I've been using git for the same (since I have very little binary data I don't feel bad using the free websites with a git commit -a; git push)

But this was another of my motivations behind this question- (which I didn't mention), why buy 1 4TB which will crash anyway but not 4 1TB. As people are getting more pro- I think Microsoft should lead with home RAID solutions. I know there was Windows Server Home but that's no more now. The OS should do integrated backup to various remote storages.

I want to hear from people who are:

1) Coders, not designers

2) Use machine only for production, nothing "fun"

Do you ever feel the need for going above 256 G?

I have 3 operating systems installed- Win10, Win7, Arch, About 20GB of media, Office 2015, etc on my primary production machine but I'm still using less than 120 GB. I'm asking because I'm wondering if any developer has a reason to not go for sub-100$ SSD ~ 256 GB and instead opt for 4TB of HDD?

xyzxyz998··on Ubuntu now available from the Windows store
Wow, you haven't even tried the thing once clearly.

Can you elaborate on what is it that is bad about WSL being on Windows? How does it make things bad for anybody? It's called choice.

xyzxyz998··on How To Go Viral By Using Fake Reddit Likes
To be fair, this is probably the only time I've seen the term hacked used correctly. I no longer know whether I should use it in this sense or the "incorrect but used by almost everyone" sense.
xyzxyz998··on 60 FPS Animations with CSS3
Yes, I noted the quotes but the comment was still useless because it doesn't add anything really informative here. Also, further muddying the water (of course after my comment) was your sibling comment which says anything above 30fps is a waste of priority.
xyzxyz998··on 60 FPS Animations with CSS3
Sarcasm doesn't carry well on the internet, if that was your intention (not all of us know everything about everything). Please refrain, specially on this board.
xyzxyz998··on Ask HN: Which sites you visit on a regular basis for knowledge and inspiration?
Least bad doesn't mean as good as it can get!
xyzxyz998··on Minimal PDF
That was informative, thank you.

I think a lot of people in the dev/power uesr community would mind paying $1 for a Kindle ebook where you note all your findings.

There have been so many instances where I wanted to do stuff with pdfs but ended up deflated.

> subset fonts

So you mean if a font has been embedded with three glyphs, 0x41=A, 0x61=a, 0x62=b, then string Aba would be \1\3\2?

xyzxyz998··on URLs are UI
Wow it does feel so much more readable than using an ampersand. I'd still prefer an ampersand because it plays well everywhere and the kind of people who'd look at url and try to understand would be too ingrained to ampersand anyway.
xyzxyz998··on Ask HN: Which sites you visit on a regular basis for knowledge and inspiration?
> Hacker news is an echo chamber focusing on computer posturing and self-aggrandizement.

I'll also add- it serves as a punching bag for people who can't speak up at their work- they vent their frustrations here by belittling everyone's work.

xyzxyz998··on Ask HN: Which sites you visit on a regular basis for knowledge and inspiration?
This site is a parody of what 90% of HN is. Cherry picking the worst parts maybe, but not exaggeration.
xyzxyz998··on Ask HN: Which sites you visit on a regular basis for knowledge and inspiration?
I visit n-gate.com weekly. I am not very well-aware of stuff outside css/js and lot of people here talk confidently about stuff they have no clue of, unopposed. n-gate reminds me how little people on this site know stuff outside of css/js/business. Rest are clueless wannabes trying to one-up each other.

My favorite comment will always be- somebody mentioned that Microsoft Band needs a realtime OS so someone proposed javascript vm. And there were 10 other people talking about it seriously.

I'm sure I'll be downvoted which will be further proof of what I'm saying. Not that I care really. I make an account a week.

Not what you're asking but something similar to BE: https://github.com/travisb-ca/nitpick

Also, your be usage experience may depend on how you're using it. In-branch/separate-branch/without-vcs? As a single user, I use it outside vcs and am reasonably happy with it.

xyzxyz998··on Bill Gates questions worth of space exploration for improving humanity (2013)
I'm not opposing what you're saying but I feel like the distribution is somewhat:

80% - Science and its marvels 15% - Humanity survival (IMHO not possible) 5% - So we know more and more and somehow fix problems where that knowledge may be applicable (is that what you're calling moral value)?

I do think that we should be better off spending money elsewhere. I don't know why Trump is so pro-space travel and stuff.

xyzxyz998··on Show HN: Carbide – A New Programming Environment
You've done a wonderful job. It takes courage to think in completely new directions, actually do something about it and then give it away- like a Buddha.

Sorry about the naysayers. Please remember that most of us on this forum are wannabes trying to one-up each other to make up for our failures. Don't blame us, we're all humans... :(
