xlm1717··on Please don't send me smart replies
I understand that Smart Replies takes away a very personal part of a conversation, and might even lead to just a couple of AIs talking to each other, but if it reduces sarcasm it can't be all that bad!
xlm1717··on Pilot-Wave Theory Gains Experimental Support
Replace non-locality with infinite universes, which is more troubling? The article does touch on this question.

Additionally, the article's aim was to demonstrate that the ESSW does not contradict pilot-wave theory, not to show that pilot-wave theory explains the results better than alternative theories, and it demonstrated this by showing that there is no contradiction if you take in account nonlocality.

The title is not misleading because the experiment described in the article does provide experimental support to the theory, support which ESSW aimed to take away. Importantly, it is not an experiment designed to show pilot-wave theory describes the results better than other theories.

xlm1717··on Hugo Chavez’s economic miracle (2013)
Better title would have been, Oil's Economic Miracle. A follow-up written today would then be titled, Miracle to Curse: How The Oil Crash Crashed Venezuela.
xlm1717··on Nate Silver Unloads on The New York Times
They sure dropped the neutrality when Nate Silver got mad at Jim Rutenberg for saying Silver missed the mark on his predictions. He definitely returned the high school lunchroom attitude back, and doesn't handle being wrong well at all.

Actually, in that sense you are a psychopath, since you are in good relations with most of your ex-girlfriends.

Also, how is not keeping an ex in your life a sign that you're overly emotional and can't get over a breakup? Keeping an ex out of your life is you getting over the breakup. Also, you can't be envious of someone you keep out of your life. More could be said about the rest of your list, which is just bad to be honest.

xlm1717··on Physics Makes Aging Inevitable, Not Biology
>They found that the shape of the survival curve remained essentially the same, but it was stretched or contracted as the temperature was changed. Creatures raised at lower temperature enjoyed a stretched survival curve, while worms exposed to higher temperature lived shorter lives.

So sci-fi stasis had it right all long.

xlm1717··on I'm a fucking webmaster
I don't see why you got downvoted. I 100% agree with you. It was simply not necessary. If you go around the web, even to large, reputable news sites, it seems more and more people are opting to not think about language and use whatever word first pops into their mind. To me, it's not about shock or ego boosting, it's simply mental laziness.
xlm1717··on Poultry Workers in Diapers as Bathroom Breaks Denied, Oxfam Says
This seems like something that should be fined heavily by the FDA. Definitely does not seem sanitary in the least.
xlm1717··on If Philosophy Won’t Diversify, Let’s Call It What It Really Is
>If you think an idea is worth teaching just because it came from a certain culture, you must not care if it's right.

They only care if it's diverse, not if it's right.

xlm1717··on Civilization 6 is coming in October, with big changes
Civ 5 and Beyond Earth both have tablet modes. They work very well.
xlm1717··on Civilization 6 is coming in October, with big changes
I have to admit I'm not a fan of the graphics. I had high hopes for Beyond Earth but haven't played more than 100 hours of it, as opposed to 1500+ with Civ 5. I hope Civ 6 doesn't disappoint like Beyond Earth did.
xlm1717··on Civilization 6 is coming in October, with big changes
Well, technically speaking Stellaris is post-cold war, by about 150 years. :P
xlm1717··on Civilization 6 is coming in October, with big changes
I would love it if Paradox did a Crusader Kings/Europa Universalis/Victoria/Hearts of Iron set in the modern era.
xlm1717··on Trump-Sanders Signal an Oligarchy on the Brink of Collapse
The irony with that is Rush never really endorsed Trump during the primaries. It was very uncomfortable for him, he at times refused to even talk about Trump.
xlm1717··on A Confession of Liberal Intolerance
You can choose political beliefs if you are aware of alternative political beliefs existing. If you live, work, and learn in an environment that is actively excluding political beliefs, so that only one political belief exists in your environment, can you really choose your political belief then?

It's debatable if nothing productive can come from sharing a department with people whose beliefs are different from your own, but it's actively counterproductive to exclude those people.

xlm1717··on State Dept.: Clinton IT aide's email archive is lost
Oops.
xlm1717··on Why Are Highly Educated Americans Getting More Liberal?
I would put my money down on 3) Insularity as the biggest driver of polarization over the past 20 years.
xlm1717··on Why You Can’t Lose Weight on a Diet
This has seemed a little suspect to me since it started making the rounds earlier this week. Does the set point not work in reverse? What I mean is, the article states "starts at 300 lbs", but no one starts at 300 lbs, people get there through poor diet. So, why doesn't the set point push them back to 200 lbs? It seems to me set point is not the complete story when it comes to weight.
xlm1717··on Safe from “safe spaces”
You can't always get what you want.
xlm1717··on Technology is destroying the idea of forgiveness
No, it is destroying the idea of forgiveness. The article gives the example of how data mining could be used to target individuals who an algorithm predicts could be likely criminals. This paves the way for discrimination and removes the presumption of innocence our criminal justice system is (should) be built upon. The criminal justice system is already unforgiving enough as it is.

The article didn't mention it, but the self-righteous outrage mobs that have become common since the rise of social media is also greatly destroying the idea of forgiveness. Once your reputation is destroyed by the social media mob, you face an incredible uphill climb to restore it.

xlm1717··on Outlaw Chinese Steel
I believe now that labelling free trade as right-wing was a ruse all along used by the GOP to sell free trade to their voters. I see the rise of Trump as a sign that voters see through the ruse.

There has been bipartisan support on Capitol Hill for TPP and TTIP. Free trade hasn't been particularly left or right recently.

xlm1717··on Long-time Iowa farm cartoonist fired after creating this cartoon
You would fire a long-time cartoonist because one cartoon wasn't funny, subtle, or provocative?

You have extremely strict standards!

xlm1717··on Ted Cruz Ends His Campaign for President
I'm not so sure this applies to most of the people. Trump is a very polarizing figure. There are segments of the population for whom what Trump says feels safe and good. At the same time, there are segments who feel outrage and disgust at what he says.
xlm1717··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
I had actually read about it last year. In the study, they used continuous glucose monitoring rather than glucose meter to track the blood sugar response to different foods precisely. They found that different people had different blood glucose response to different foods. The study only tracked participants for 1-2 weeks, but they do speculate on using personalized interventions devised from glucose measurements to treat and prevent such conditions as obesity and prediabetes. I decided to try it for myself.

xlm1717··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
Having a lot of muscle will increase your base metabolic rate. Being a serious powerlifter, I imagine the increase due to muscle was significant (speaking just as someone who reads into this, not as a qualified professional!). Also, being a powerlifter, if you don't maintain the muscles, they would atrophy, taking a lot of weight with them.
xlm1717··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
Buying a blood glucose meter is not an expensive investment (provided you don't really need it, ie. don't have diabetes) and it will pay dividends in terms of health. With a meter and about 200 strips and lancets, you can determine a big list of foods that raise your blood glucose and foods that don't.

I've been customizing my meals based on what my glucose meter tells me raises my blood glucose the least and I am losing weight. The weight loss is gradual, but the most important thing is I am doing it eating foods I will eat, setting up a diet I can stick to long term, and I know that this will be good for me because the numbers back it up. Like you, I've always liked meats and testing myself with the glucose meter shows that eating more meats and less carbs is good for me personally. I should note I am not diagnosed with diabetes, I just bought the glucose meter to guide me in what I eat.

In real life, he is probably laughing at Congress for trying to hold his country responsible.
xlm1717··on Could Cats and Dogs Feel the Same Emotions We Do?
Agree with this. The resolution the author reveals at the end, that simply playing with the cat more reduced anxiety behavior, almost makes me think that it wasn't that the cat was anxious, just that the cat was under stimulated and acted out to use up excess energy.
xlm1717··on Why you shouldn't exercise to lose weight
This is why I can't see anyone eating 4000 calories of fat without feeling so full they'll throw most of it back up.
xlm1717··on Unmasking the Men Behind Zero Hedge
I think you're just splitting hairs there.
