xela79··on Why time seems to pass faster as we age
yes awesome site! I remember this from when it was first published, very clearly explains why the passage of time changes during your lifetime, and also explains why some people search for new thrills around their midlife to try and get those extended experiences again, always trying something new, because just doing the things you were doing before is now perceived as boring.
xela79··on If You're So Successful, Why Are You Still Working 70 Hours a Week?
ya, also earing 204 million IRR / month, and very happy.
xela79··on Your TV Is Too Good for You
in that case, you also don't need a TV. or internet. or entertainment in general.
xela79··on Recognizing the limitations of cloud drives
indeed, how can this article be impartial, at least they didn't "sponsor" a random site to post the content, and they themselves post it on their blog. But it is very clear that it is hard to take anything written on the blog as truth, seeing as the solution is their own product...
xela79··on Why is no one making a new version of old Facebook?
> Now young people know from experience that little good comes from their parents and extended family being on the social network as them

the amount of young people who realize this and actually take action, if a very very small part, majority is just spoon-fed the new normal of these "social" apps

xela79··on Ask HN: Why isn't there a Rotten Tomatoes for consumer electronics?
> The internet used to be filled with nerds and people that are interested in things enough to seek information on the web.

and/or actually do proper testing, and share their results, in a consistent manner, but the effort and time is simply no longer worth it. quality content gets buried under 10 second video clips, spam sites, and your content gets copied by large websites. 10 years ago I spent up to 200 hours testing one video card, having build identical systems to do proper apple vs apple tests. But all that time invested, even then, was barely worth it from a commitment point of view. And if you publish such an article now, your viewership is so limited to a very select few. New generation simply doesn't know how a computer actually works, where as 30 years ago, you had to learn more than just the basics to be able to operate it.

xela79··on Show HN: RAM Prices
awesome site that geizhals, even if you don't need to buy from there, the amount of filters is just impressive. Take hard drives for example, you can filter on CMR HDDs so you don't get a HDD that is rubbish in your NAS
xela79··on End of General Avalailability of the Free VSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 7.x and 8.x)
Adobe Premiere on Windows was for a very long time the de facto standard, but them stopping to provide affordable personal usage perpetual licenses, just opened the gateway for alternatives, and Da Vinci Resolve really stepped up here, allowing to you run it for free with a majority of features available.

and ESXi free version with reduced features offered the same approach. This broadcom change will push the majority to alternatives, for personal and professional use.

previously there was basically no contender for polished enterprise ready hypervisors, small business were all VMware shops. These will all convert to alternative technologies, shifting the balance.

vmware might turn out to be the AS400 of hypervisors...

xela79··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal

xela79··on Microsoft's Fast
what browser? works fine in Chrome
xela79··on NetBox: a source of truth for everything on your network
test/test also works :)
xela79··on Untranslatable
this was posted before, many of the "untranslatable" things are perfectly translatable.
xela79··on Flowblade: Open-source video editor for Linux
I would say for amateur video editing, that DaVinci Resolve free edition is ideal candidate, you can go quite in-depth, or just drag & drop and add some transitions; previously I used imovie on mac too (even build a hackintosh first and bought imovie license $12) but it does not add that small extra that was needed.

once I started working with DaVinci.. game changer, from start to finish, with some advanced motion tracking, title overlays, in less than a few hours. Upside is also that there are plenty of tutorials available for DaVinci, from beginner to advanced

xela79··on If you don't genuinely love tech, don't work in tech
"if you don't genuinely love *, don't work in **"

cause work is life, right?

sigh

not as if you work so you can live, and you can absolutely work, do proper work, in a branch, without actually "loving" that branch, to earn yourself a living wage.

that dude needs to get off his high horse

xela79··on Happy Public Domain Day

xela79··on Nuclear smartphone 3V battery lasting for 50 years
not a very high quality source article indeed, first paragraph: "A Chinese startup has unveiled a new battery that it claims can generate electricity for 50 years with the need for charging or maintenance."

wauw, a battery that needs charging.

did they even read what they wrote?

xela79··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
Doom - duh! Wacky Wheels, (top down hotseat racing game!) actual software however... never.
xela79··on My 3-year experiment as a digital nomad
He would save himself so much money by going to ICE car, a reliable brand which requires minimal maintenance will save him so much money and he will be able to actually drive to somewhere with the trailer.

60 miles... with a brand new 40k car. Wauw

xela79··on UniFi U7 Pro
So their Wifi Pro 2.5GbE product requires an Enterprise Switch to be able to get 2.5 GbE https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/category/switching-utility/pr...

I hope they upgrade their Pro switch line-up so they are aligned.

xela79··on Baldur's Gate 3 Wins Game of the Year at the Game Awards

it helps that the dev studio is based in Belgium where loot boxes are banned by law :)

xela79··on Steven Spielberg Predicts 'Implosion' of Film Industry (2013)
they don't have to exclusive, you can have "quake" gameplay with good story telling; recent Half Life lore, should more than proof that fact
xela79··on You Shouldn't Make Friends at Work
you hit the nail on the head; you don't have to "befriend" all your co-workers, just find solutions together for the work related issues. During downtime, if you do happen to cross a like minded individual, do be more friendly, you never know if this person will in fact become a "bestie". I got plenty of friends, who left for other jobs, where years down the line, we still see and spend time with on a regular bases. so following this guy's advice on "don't be a friends with your co-workers" is just horrible.
xela79··on YouTube's crackdown on ad blockers intensifies
why do they think can decide what content you want to be downloaded through your internet connection and displayed on your devices? once the bits & bytes enter my network, you're free to do with them what you want, they have no say in what is done with that data. If it's filtered, that is not their decision to make
xela79··on Analyzing Starfield’s Performance on Nvidia’s 4090 and AMD’s 7900 XTX
knew I recognized this comment. Starfield looks perfectly fine, with some pretty impressive vistas to admire, and that with a RTX 3070 at 5760x1200
xela79··on Starfield’s missing Nvidia DLSS support has been added by a free mod
