xchaotic··on Sony Unlocks In-Camera Forgery-Proof Technology
What’s is the supposed business case for sharing raw, unmodified 42Mpix photos? And if they are still modified later on, and perhaps re-signed, that’s where I would attack.
xchaotic··on Given Apple's behaviour adding ads, what are the best Linux phones?
I think rather than looking for a Linux flavour you want to look at various companies business models and size to see if it can sustain the ongoing cost of releasing and supporting a phone, OS, security patches etc. So far, Apple still has a pretty low % of revenue coming from ads.
xchaotic··on It’s raining PFAS: rainwater is unsafe to drink even in Antarctica and Tibet
Exactly - lead was known to cause harm since well late Roman times I guess.
xchaotic··on Homebrew Bluetooth Headphones
These are overkill and way too heavy for headphones
xchaotic··on Cognitive decline linked to ultraprocessed food, study finds
I (and other) call Bs on classifying something as processed or ultra processed as inherently bad. Baby formulas, workout premixes, and also home cooking are all forms of processed food. It’s what you put in it and also at what ratio is what matters most. If you get processed food that has all the good oils and fiber and proteins like YFood or Soylent that’s actually more healthy than say eating “unprocessed” fried potatoes for example.
xchaotic··on AWS us-east-2 outage
Write an article on that because you make it sound simple. Or better yet, start a company that configures this for companies.
xchaotic··on Helium has revenues of $6.5k/month after $365M investment from A16Z
Investing into an illegally tapped coal power plant in Mongolia is about as safe an investment as investment in crypto itself.
xchaotic··on The Rise and Fall of the Manufactured Home – Part I
It’s really simple- real estate is the only casino where you are almost guaranteed a leveraged payout in the long run. So as soon as houses became an investment, the way to maximise profit is not to go for the cheapest but for the most expensive house you can afford.
xchaotic··on Fermented Chili “Open Sauce” – My most starred repo has no code in it
Almost any beginner programming course states that algorithms are like recipes for a computer. Conversely a recipe is an algorithm meant for imperfect humans. If a recipe isn’t code then what is ?
xchaotic··on High-intensity exercise, some new news
As he correctly states- even n1 can lead to science, especially if everyone published similar journals there’d be a lot of ns.
xchaotic··on High-intensity exercise, some new news
There’s the concept of Zones and you can measure the intensity directly with a power meter or indirectly with HR. Anything that reaches close to your sustained max HR or max power is considered high intensity as it uses different energy systems to produce muscle energy And yes there’s overwhelming research that for a non pro athlete you should only do one or two high intensity workouts per week (and pad with low intensity sessions to get enough training time)
xchaotic··on High-intensity exercise, some new news
Fat oxidation only ramps up once you depleted your glycogen stores. That usually happens an hour into an exercise or so. So doing short hiit session does not directly burn fat but does ramp up your metabolism for the rest of the day.
xchaotic··on ShotSpotter defamation lawsuit against Vice has been dismissed
ShotSpotter execs learn about Streisand effect the hard way. Living in Europe, I have never heard of the company, now I have.
xchaotic··on Purdue Starts Comprehensive Semiconductor Degree Programs in U.S.
Most people here are dunking on this specific industry not paying enough for skilled labour but the problem is more generic- that’s how we build the society around capitalism and we still seem to value capital more than labour.
xchaotic··on Inflation, part 1: On shelter futures
Ha, same here - read two articles and signed up. I really like the writing style.
xchaotic··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
Real life networking. Someone recommended me to another person who reached out directly to me. 7 years later I’m still loving the job.
xchaotic··on Ask HN: New job at BigCo. Everything has friction
A lot of the friction in the banks is for legal reasons - they HAVE to abide by certain protocols. If you treat that as an extra challenge rather than a hindrance it will be more rewarding.
xchaotic··on How This Ends
I actually agree that hiking too high is a very poor policy choice for a number of reasons but for your example of fuel, if you kill the demand for it, the price will not skyrocket. On the other hand, however this would also mean that the economy as a whole is dead so again not the best policy choice (but it is likely to rein in inflation)
xchaotic··on The new and upgraded Framework Laptop
I had a look and it looks like everything is upgraded- the chassis, the motherboard etc. So if you wanted to take advantage of all of the improvements you’d need to buy them all. At which point it might be less materially wasteful to but another, less recyclable laptop that uses fewer parts ?
xchaotic··on Fly.io: The reclaimer of Heroku's magic
It could also be a simple user error- there’s been stories on HN on how people racked up massive bills for example because CI was running continuously etc.
xchaotic··on Fly.io: The reclaimer of Heroku's magic
Imo it’s really simple, actually. Stop the service and delete after the next billing cycle. Price that in for regular price of the service.
xchaotic··on Amazon Q1/2022 [pdf]
No longer focused on growth it seems.
xchaotic··on Cryogenic CO2 could end rail delays caused by leaves on the line
Is it not going to wear down the tracks at an accelerated rate though? (Which also implies delays for maintenance)
xchaotic··on Cryogenic CO2 could end rail delays caused by leaves on the line
Obviously they forgot to add Sharks. Sharks with lasers is the ultimate solution.
xchaotic··on Are We Sixel Yet?
Looks like iTerm2 supports this already. Where can I read more about the format and the use cases? I’m already thinking of terminal based graphical RPG game…
xchaotic··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
As a shareholder of… (checking) 10 shares of Twitter I approve this on financial grounds
xchaotic··on Web3: A VC-funded gig economy of securities fraud
So? Doesn’t make any less complicated. Kiss
xchaotic··on Web3: A VC-funded gig economy of securities fraud
Why do you think you need the complication of blockchain for people to pay for art? Also a technicality but they’re paying for the NFT of the art not the art itself and some fees, which is not optimal.
xchaotic··on Folding bicycle small enough to fit in hand luggage
I think the Brompton with their 16” is the lowest I’d want a grown adult human to ride. Even in urban areas, there’s lots of uneven surfaces, speed bumps, pot holes, cobbles, you name it. So even 18” is a compromise - I live pretty rural and a 29” MTB with chunky tires and full suspension is as comfy as it gets, but also a must for rooty singletrack etc
xchaotic··on Arm to drop up to 15 percent of staff, about 1k people
That does not compute. How can you be committed to work and not care who’s leading the company?
