xcdzvyn··on Nginx has moved to GitHub
I feel this. Recently _some_ company, I have no idea which, has decided my IP is malicious and refuses to serve my requests. This has effectively banned me from a few websites, including a government service I pay taxes for.
xcdzvyn··on I'm blocking connections from AWS to my on-prem services
I'm slightly ashamed to admit I don't know what RPZ, PTR, or SPF are, nor do I understand the asides about AI or reverse DNS.

What precisely is his problem with Amazon?

Aged like wine.

Anyway, 0x83.

xcdzvyn··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
Similarly I find I sometimes enjoy listening to the radio more than Spotify because I don't feel forced to min/max my enjoyment. I have to listen to whatever is on.
xcdzvyn··on RuneLite – open-source RuneScape Client
I tried getting into OSRS a few weeks ago. I noticed the official Jagex client doesn't run on Linux, so I installed RuneLite. However Jagex recently mandated the transition of email/password logins to a fancy proprietary OAuthy thing that _requires_ their official launcher.

Apparently the kosher way around this is installing RuneLite and the Jagex launcher in Lutris or Wine, but I just gave up.

xcdzvyn··on NumPy-style broadcasting in Futhark
I've seen Futhark on the front page a few times recently, has there been a resurgence of interest for some reason?

Exciting if so. I think it's a cool language

xcdzvyn··on KeePassXC Debian maintainer has removed all network features
Fortunately Debian maintainers have a fantastic track record of writing ad-hoc patches for security-sensitive software.
xcdzvyn··on I before E except after C, except …
I dislike that people interpret this adage being violated as an example of English's inconsistency. The clearer conclusion is that it just isn't true.

I could say "every word in English starts with ß" and then point out that every single word violates this rule. What a crazy language!

But that would be silly. Not because English is crazy, but because that obviously isn't true.

xcdzvyn··on The best way to have complex discussions?
The communities are generally significantly smaller but yes. Двач, 8chan, lain, and sharty come to mind.

They're rarely "nice" places though (lain is fairly pleasant).

xcdzvyn··on I don't want to fill out your contact form
Yeah, Canonical asks you how you performed in your high school English class as if that's something you're supposed to know.

Is that really a valuable metric for a software engineer?

xcdzvyn··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
I don't. Deliberately exposing people to risk for fun?
xcdzvyn··on As private equity dominates wheelchair market, users wait months for repairs
Why would I buy something that kills me the day after the warranty expires?
xcdzvyn··on Stealing your Telegram account in 10 seconds flat
I don't want to spoil the surprise, but this is worth the read just for the "twist" at the end.
xcdzvyn··on Show HN: An extension to track your Wikipedia adventures
This is fantastic. Great idea!
xcdzvyn··on Google made me ruin a perfectly good website (2023)
Not only did they choose to make their website worse for money, doing so encourages Google to continue doing this.

This all coming from "an anticapitalist tech blog" humoured me a little.

xcdzvyn··on Dedoimedo reviews Wayland in 2024 and comes to sad conclusions
Testing multiple DEs would be great but I think there's merit to calling Plasma more Linux-y (or hacker-y?) than GNOME.
xcdzvyn··on Snowflake Arctic Instruct (128x3B MoE), largest open source model
Thank you.
xcdzvyn··on Building a full Django project, starting with a single file
I really wish there were something like this for Phoenix. I want to like it, but I feel a little inundated with all the codegen.
xcdzvyn··on Meta Horizon OS
Yeah - while I've never dived too deeply, I have modded my 3DS a fair bit and didn't know what the OS was codenamed. I've always just seen it called 3DS OS, native firm, etc.
xcdzvyn··on Pico.sh – Hacker Labs
I have a thing to sell you, it's only $50 and you'll definitely like it; it's great.

I won't tell you what it is though - I'm not here to hold your hand.

xcdzvyn··on The failure of the Domino's 30-minute delivery guarantee
It seems you and the GP agree, though, that gig work shouldn't be treated full-time employment, which was the topic at hand.
xcdzvyn··on Dangers of “decentralized” ID systems
I understand its shallow of me, but I stopped reading exactly here.

Your government needs to know who everybody is. That means illegal immigrants can't get drivers licenses, and that's kind of the point.

> Even IDs for undocumented people (such as Californian AB 60 driver’s licenses) require a foreign passport, national ID card or birth certificate, and can’t help people who have no state-issued identity documents at all.

> This existing ID system is harmful, inaccessible and a single point of failure

xcdzvyn··on I should have loved biology (2020)
Necessity is the mother of invention :)
xcdzvyn··on Short Stack: World’s smallest Nintendo Wii
Is this seen as any less of a "Wii" than a trimmed board? What if parts were replaced with newer, functionally identical ones?

This is kind of a Wii ship of Theseus.

xcdzvyn··on Framework's software and firmware have been a mess, but it's working on them
I must admit I'm honestly not impressed with my Framework. I'm sure it's decent for a Windows laptop - the repairability alone is certainly enough to set it apart there - but coming from a MacBook, everything's just.. worse.

Were MacBook upgrades not so expensive (all i want is 16GB!) and my love affair with NixOS, I'd probably have regretted buying one.

xcdzvyn··on Phanpy: A minimalistic opinionated Mastodon web client
Minimal graphically, perhaps; the homepage alone downloaded and executed 96 separate JavaScript files.

It does look pretty though.

xcdzvyn··on Stalwart mail server (self-hosted all-in-one mail server) now as an admin webui
Sounds malicious.
xcdzvyn··on Show HN: DualShock calibration in the browser using WebHID
I completely understand the desire to not implement such things, but I also understand why they exist.

Unfortunately, perhaps due to a mixture of elitism, protectionism, and market dominance, writing cross-platform software in any capacity, let alone cross platform software that requires low-level hardware access, Bluetooth, video, geolocation, etc., is far harder than it deserves to be, and using the web as an abstraction layer makes these things a million times easier.

edit: It's also far easier to distribute this stuff. I just want my video game controller working in slightly better order - I don't want to have to install some bluetooth library and then choose between an x86 Mac, ARM Mac, x86 Windows, x64 Windows, AppImage, deb, flatpak, .tar.gz, snap, my package manager (if it's even there), try install it, shit, it doesn't run on my distro, patch it, use it once, then uninstall it.
