wwkeyboard··on A homemade receiver for GPS and GLONASS satellites
If you want to view a site over an amateur radio link it can't include advertisements, and the link will be slow compared to any of the 802.11 modes. Plus lots of hams learned web design in the 90's.

edit: not an hour later I land on this site http://www.phonestack.com/farhan/bitx.html

wwkeyboard··on A homemade receiver for GPS and GLONASS satellites
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/wiki/index is a pretty good place to start. The ARRL has manuals that walk through the theory behind the exams for the US licences. The extra class book explains the theory of building a modern transceiver, starting with doping silicon to make semiconductors.
wwkeyboard··on Frequent sauna bathing can reduce the risk of dementia
At least they reference the original article, including the DOI. That being noteworthy is another indication of how bad most science reporting is.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: How do you organise/integrate all the information in your life?
You don't have to switch editors. For the past few years I've moved between rubymine, pycharm, and atom for coding while still having emacs open for my org-mode notes.
wwkeyboard··on Is Facebook’s Massive Open Office Scaring Away Developers?
If any one else wants to know more about these google "in ear monitor". That's the trade name for the headphones musicians use to hear the mixed product while also protecting themselves from the amplified sound.

wwkeyboard··on LoRa Range Testing in San Francisco
If you are curious about tropospheric ducting this[1] site shows openings determined by looking at what packets are coming through APRS igateways. Some of the LoRa stuff runs on UHF so it could be subject to similar openings(like the huge one over the midwestern US right now.

wwkeyboard··on Learning systems programming with Rust
That's because they are slides for a talk. As a general rule the better the slides are without the talk, the worse the talk is with the slides.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: How did NASA make reliable software if they didn't invent unit tests?
The "few hundred million for quality control" number still stands. In addition they were able to draw on everyone from the people designing the transistors through to the programers to debug problems. Not something many modern projects can do.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: How did NASA make reliable software if they didn't invent unit tests?
In addition to everything else mentioned here they spent a TON of money[1]. For example they spent what would be 3.6 billion 2016 dollars on Guidance and Navigation. If your current project could drop a few hundred million on QC I bet quality would go way up regardless of automated testing or not.

wwkeyboard··on GOES 3 satellite
AO-7 is still kind of going, again. It was launched in 1974! http://ww2.amsat.org/?page_id=1031
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: How do you take notes other than using paper?
I absolutely must have control over my own notes. The primary reason I'm using org-mode + dropbox is that I can replace that system with some other file-sync on my own if dropbox goes away.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
I'm pretty sure https://pinboard.in is only one person. Apparently a healthy skepticism about everything is useful for running your own SaaS.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: How do you deal with so many project management systems?
I've found the same applies to corporate organization tools. I manage my tasks separately with "update JIRA" being one of those tasks.
wwkeyboard··on VW Toys with Giving Up the U.S. Mass Market, and Dealers Fume
I thought VW belts were pretty easy to change: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQhfcdQf1QA

The similarity between vehicles is why I've stuck with Subarus, everything under a Forester looks pretty much like everything underneath an Impreza.

wwkeyboard··on GitKraken: git GUI Client for Windows Mac and Linux
You missed the point of the post.

edit: When you load the page there is nothing to convince someone to dig further. All it says is "trust us it's better".

wwkeyboard··on GitKraken: git GUI Client for Windows Mac and Linux
The lack of screenshots above the fold fails my sniff test. If it's so great show me, if not I wondering what's hiding.

The same thing applies for languages and frameworks, if the code is great show it off.

wwkeyboard··on Habits of cell phone usage and sperm quality
Or the 5th sentence of the abstract:

> Questionnaires accessing demographic data and characteristics of cell phone usage were completed by 106 men referred for semen analysis

And this article isn't recommending a change in behavior, only further study:

> Investigation using large-scale studies is thus needed.

wwkeyboard··on What’s Apple’s competitive edge going forward?
I think that simplicity of their product line drives some of the corporate sales as well. If I tell some random IT department to get a macbook, there is only so bad of a machine they will pick for me. HP, Lenovo, and Dell have some really shoddy machines at their cheap end. At a startup you can specify exactly what model you get, but when it's a large IT department saying "generic windows machine" is much more of a risk than asking for "a mac".
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: Are you programming on your holidays?
I'm working through stockfighter.io, lots of fun!
wwkeyboard··on Listening to satellites for $30
A Yagi antenna is probably the easiest directional, high gain antenna to build. There are a bunch of different ways to build them. Here is one using a tape measure http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Tape-Measure-Antenna/
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: How do you search for an appropriate English word?
I use this almost daily when I name a variable or function. It's useful to look for a more precise noun or verb, or see if they have other connotations.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: What are the best remote-friendly job sites for engineers?
Being the only remote developer on a team is very hard. You are often forgotten and left out of hallway conversations and over-the-shoulder meetings. Working remotely requires a very different set of self-motivation and prioritization skills in addition to communication skills. Someone offering to be the only remote worker as their first remote work experience is setting themselves up for failure.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but taking OPs advise will be much harder than working for a company that has established remotees.

wwkeyboard··on Why I'm Selling My Google Stock Grant
> I can't imagine any combination of individual situation and risk tolerance that would make holding a large amount of a single publicly-traded stock an optimal investment strategy.

It can make sense if you have a significant impact on the performance of that stock. It's pretty common to give the C-level executives a lot of stock in the hopes that they drive up the value of that stock. This is also what activist investors do; buy a lot of stock, get a position on the board, try to drive up the share price.

However, anyone taking advice from HN comments isn't in one of these situations.

wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: What are your best “soft skill” resources?
You might try Toastmasters. Once you get past the first few "nervousness" lessons they focus on how to convey meaning with speech. Every chapter is different, so YMMV. Several of the speeches you have to prepare cover persuasion, motivation, and how to structure a speech so that everyone remembers exactly what you want them to remember. They teach through having you give a series of 5-7 minute speeches, but I've found the practice helpful beyond giving a formal talk.
wwkeyboard··on Using Emacs and Git with Magit 2.1
I really live having good formatting and spell check in the commit messages. It's much nicer than the `git commit -m "blah"` messages. Sure I could use another GUI, but magit is very easy when I'm already in emacs.
wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: I'm owed 8k by a startup that's going under. What do I do?
It's a little late for you, but Mike Monteiro's "Fuck you, pay me!" talk has a lot of good information.

wwkeyboard··on Ask HN: Slow engineers, did you get faster? How?
The high value project is a great place to find the parts that require the least amount of effort on your part but will have the highest value to the company and deliver those first. As an engineer this feels like "cheating". It's not, you are being prudent.

I just finished reading The Effective Engineer by Ed Lau and highly recommend it( https://www.theeffectiveengineer.com/book ). It covers both concrete (like keep a daily log) and more general ideas(e.g. your work is measured by the value it produces for the company, not the effort you put into it).

wwkeyboard··on The View from the Front Seat of the Google Self-Driving Car
People still ride horses and we've had cars for over 100 years. I don't see driving going away, it just might be constrained in when and where you are allowed to drive(maybe like Autobahn in Chicago and Motorsports Ranch in Houston).
