wpdev_63··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
Is really that big of a deal that we have two types of connectors for cellphones sold today?

Why does EU think it's so important to have USB-C on iphone that they must pass laws dictating apple's business strategy?

It feels the EU is overreaching here, by alot. There are alot of other e-waste that's much worst than iphone cables and they serve as a solid competitor to the usb-c clusterf%^$ standards that's going on right now.

Can't be passing consumer laws imo to make things slightly more convenient for the end user.

wpdev_63··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
I didn't say anything about culturism in that comment.

My point still stands that the problems of overpopulation in the countries these people are from is just going to bring that problem to canada. The economy cannot support them.

Canadians today aren't having children so why are we bringing these people in? How is this in anyway moral?

wpdev_63··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
>Do you consider the United Kingdom, France, Japan, the United States, and Germany third world countries?

Ahh here comes the part where you call me a racist and immediately think your morally superior to everyone else in the thread lol.

Your trying making equivalence between western 1st nations that share most of the cultural values that exist in Canada vs 3rd world poor nations with population numbers higher than the whole north american continent that we should immediately treat the same otherwise it would be racist.

wpdev_63··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
Why must we compare ourselves to 3rd world countries that have terrible quality of life issues?

Maybe the canadian economy isn't able to support a decent quality of life and these population levels. Seriously go visit these countries these people are from and ask yourself, would you like canada to turn into this?! Let's be honest with ourselves.

Don't worry you can just label me a racist and devolve the argument around that instead of the fundamental issues with immigration today. Canada is going to turn into the countries where these people are from if there aren't cut backs.

wpdev_63··on The endless search for a crypto use case
Kinda surprised nobody is even hinting at the big elephant in the room. So I'll give the hint; filecoin.
wpdev_63··on The fall of Reddit: Why it’s quickly declining into chaos
The instant downvoting is a dead giveaway to what they're about. It's going to be interesting to see what rises from the "web 3.0".
wpdev_63··on C# 11 Preview Updates – Raw string literals, UTF-8 and more
Found out the other day the nintendo switch emulator ryujinx is written in C#. It's the first I've heard of a performant emulator written with a gc language and it's amazing. It's as fast as its competitor written C++ which goes to show that C# can be just as fast as language without a runtime with minimal gc pauses.
wpdev_63··on Ashton Kutcher’s non-profit, Thorn, supports EU plans for CSAM scanning
Apparently "trafficking children" is so wide spread and rampant that europeans must give up more of their privacy and their liberties for "security and the children". Welcome to politics in 2022!
wpdev_63··on TSMC to manufacture 2nm chips in 2025. Apple and Intel first to adopt
Ukraine is very different from Taiwan. One is larger than the size of texas and landlocked and the other is an island the size of rhode island. I agree with you in that china is less likely to invade but due to economic reasons.
wpdev_63··on Canada bans foreign home buyers for two years
They're about 10 years too late. The chinese have already moved their money into toronto looking at the demographics.
wpdev_63··on Zelensky video deepfake
Well they did one of trump and that was pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_jrebvmPlk&t=14s
wpdev_63··on The deceptive PR behind Apple’s “expanded protections for children”
I used to always get the latest and greatest iphone but with the politics and everything that's going on why would I want to spend more than the absolute minimum on my cellphone? There are plenty of wholesome things to spend money on other than tech.
wpdev_63··on EU plans to make Bitcoin transfers more traceable
>Stop fantasizing that the government cares about the shit you buy. This is not about you.

Government cares very much what people buy and worst yet companies care even more.

Believe or not society functioned pretty well before the surveillance zoo and people were able to spend their money without worrying about their privacy. For the 99% of people that aren't money laundering or tax evading, yes the right to privacy is important.

wpdev_63··on Off the Grid Messenger
It reminds of this project[0] using lora protocol and custom icb. The advantage of using lora is that it can go up to 25 miles and uses 1/10th of an amp when in use so it can last for years.

wpdev_63··on Microsoft's Introduction to Rust Video Course
Microsoft really could be using their resources much better than this... Seriously..
wpdev_63··on Star Citizen Progress Tracker v1.0
I would be pretty cool if there was a mass effect mmo imo. I prefer the lore of that game over whatever is in star citizen and bioware has actual experience developing AAA.

If EA had half a brain they would beatup robert and take his development money.

wpdev_63··on Google will consider lowering Play Store cut to 15% for certain apps
You're saying that the development tools, backend hosting, and other play services provide no value to developers? I disagree but at the same time google has been doing a less than great at promoting android apps and helping developers monetize their apps. Atleast compared to apple.
wpdev_63··on There are at least 10 different Microsoft design conventions in Windows 11
Kinda wish microsoft would make Windows 10 the last backwards compatible windows and start from scratch. Virtualize Win10 for backwards compatibility and start from a blank slate with modern design principles.
wpdev_63··on Matrix has become the messaging app of choice for top-secret communications
Briar[0] is suppose to be a bit more secure than matrix which uses google captcha.

wpdev_63··on Microsoft looks ready to launch Windows 11
QubeOS does what you are describing but it's obviously not as polished as a commercial product would be from microsoft. I believe chromeOS runs browser instances within their own vms and has pretty good security.
wpdev_63··on Microsoft looks ready to launch Windows 11
It would be interesting to see microsoft to create a meta operating system that would run virtualized instances of windows 10, xp etc. to run applications securely and in the way to easily backup/version. I would easily pay $200 for such an operating system with enterprise grade support. There's nothing on the market like it right now.

I hope microsoft can figure out how to successfully monetize the operating system market again. I don't like them putting all their eggs in the cloud marketplace.

wpdev_63··on Uber recognises a union for the first time
Uber's price directly correlates with the amount of business it does. It has doesn't have a monopoly on transportation and if the union pump up the prices then there will be less jobs. It's not like other union shops where they can more or less force a monopoly.

Uber was never suppose to be a full time job and by unionizing/legitimizing it, it's going to decrease ridership.

wpdev_63··on Valve is making a Switch-like portable gaming PC
Not necessarily right now but a few years down the road when it actually releases(though no one knows when they'll actually release knowing valve's track record).

Not sure why people are downvoting me....

wpdev_63··on Valve is making a Switch-like portable gaming PC
Just picked up the new macbook air m1 and I am staggered to find that I can play starcraft 2 and bioshock decently on a laptop that draws 30watts and is capacitivily cooled... Really just unbelievable.

So if valve could someone get ahold of some cutting edge arm processors in the next few years then this could be very viable(though I doubt they will get it out before the next version of the nintendo switch).

wpdev_63··on Nvidia cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards
I said it before and I'll say it again - the vendors are the criminals here. There are vital industries that need GPUs for their viability - video games, medical research, engineering etc. and they should filter out the robo buyers to allow these people to purchase the graphic cards at reasonable rates. Right not RX570s are going for $200 on ebay right now... A 4 year old mid-tier graphics card....

Just allocating some GPUs to a wait list would be enough.

For people like me who cannot wait for GPU to become available you can get a very cheap usb-hdmi dongle off of amazon for dual monitor support. It works well enough for what I need it to do.

wpdev_63··on LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online
Curious anyone would be willing to host a mirror on ipfs?

I personally don't care to watch violent videos but it did fill a much needed void that the YouTube censors created.

wpdev_63··on What is Chia cryptocurrency and why is it bad news for hard drives?
I don't blame the people buying up the GPUs to mine these cryptocurrencies but the vendors who allow them to do. It is absolutely criminal that they don't filter out these miners when they sell these products. They can easily make it possibly to only allow maybe 1 or 2 of these computers are shipped to a certain address or only one graphics card per a credit card. Whatever way they choose. Even putting a captcha to knock out the robo buyers would probably be enough.

They have an obligation to video game makers, hospitals, and other businesses to sell them so that people that need them for other purposes can purchase them at reasonable prices. It's also on the govt to make sure that this happens.

Just my 2 cents.

wpdev_63··on Bitcoin is a ‘boon for surveillance’, says former CIA director
Does anyone know what's going on with the kovri project that's suppose implement I2p tunneling for monero? It seems like the project stalled and the developer dropped off the face of the earth.
wpdev_63··on 7nm GPU out of China is said to rival AMD and Nvidia's
I don't doubt that China has the talent available to make great processors but for them to come out of the blue with a GPU that is 'competitive' these industry giants reaks of intellectual plagiarism.

It will be interesting to see what actually comes out and how the companies(and politics) respond.

wpdev_63··on Firefox 86.0
If anyone from the firefox mobile team is here: please fix the bug where you can't scroll through the tabs when they overflow. Also opening whatsapp links for some reason doesn't open whatsapp but chrome does. This bug and several other nuance things made me go back to chrome mobile which is unfortunate. Especially with the fact that chrome mobile doesn't support plugins.

I am a happy firefox user and the print preview is one of the very few things that made me open chrome backup.
