winthrowe··on Meta torrented & seeded 81.7 TB dataset containing copyrighted data
Profit at all costs is a political agenda.
winthrowe··on San Francisco seeks ban of software critics say is used to inflate rents
It was clear and understandable to me, but follows a format I've seen many times. Headlines in English tend to have a style that's widely used, but would not be considered good usage outside of headlines, which I could expect to be troublesome for non-native speakers.
winthrowe··on Canadian Tire Money
In 90’s New Brunswick it was practically legal tender. Accepted at basically every mom and pop store, and even many chains. Not so much since the turn of the century.
winthrowe··on Show HN: A Short IPv6 Guide for Home IPv4 Admins
Similar to v4 DHCP guard, configure RA guard on your switches.
winthrowe··on Forget privacy: you're terrible at targeting anyway (2019)
> As far as I'm aware, the wishlist has no other function.

It's also visible to accounts you've friended, for gift-giving purposes.

winthrowe··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
If you care about this enough to abandon old software, they built that and called it Windows S and few wanted it.
winthrowe··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
2. Achron from 2011 is an RTS fully and completely built around time travel as it's core mechanic, perhaps to the detriment of general playability.

Available on steam or direct.

winthrowe··on Mozilla Foundation places two-page advocacy ad in The New York Times (2004)
That's ancient and perhaps best forgotten.

More important in this day and age is since Firefox 91 there is a checkbox in privacy and security to automagically SSO using the account on the Windows 10/11 Account Settings page that Edge uses.

winthrowe··on How to find a domain's authoritative nameservers
Trace output was easier to read in the days when everybody trusted and there was no security.

Try reading this, with just the tool output, A and NS records, like the old days:

dig +trace jvns.ca | egrep ";|IN\s+A|IN\s+NS\s"

winthrowe··on The void in Calgary: How office towers emptied in a once bustling downtown
I agree with this.

Much of the square footage is devoted to entertainment pursuits that don't have a roof and close for the winter elsewhere in Canada.

winthrowe··on Amazon Is Lobbying the US Government to Make Pot Legal
Going so far as to actually smoke it is a hair too far.

Get a quality vaporizer and enjoy the full bouquet without the harmful combustion byproducts.

winthrowe··on Windows 11 is no longer compatible with Oracle VirtualBox VMs
Several reasons, but the biggest I see is Passwordless.

Windows 10 can act as a FIDO2 authenticator like a Yubikey, but needs a TPM to do so. They want this to be something that actually happens for the average user in windows 11.

winthrowe··on IPv4 vs. IPv6 FAQ
Not offering IPv6 is intentional misconfiguration in this day and age, and deserves shame.
winthrowe··on IPv4 vs. IPv6 FAQ
BellAliant in eastern Canada, the only provider of residential layer 1 fiber in my area, still isn't even assigning a /128 or /64, let alone proper delegation.
winthrowe··on The emergence of heat and humidity too severe for human tolerance (2020)
The traditional 5 dollar analog hygrometer uses a paper/metallic strip coil:

winthrowe··on The Framework Laptop is now shipping
What about a hex numpad? IPv6Buddy is a real shipping product, according to their longstanding website.
winthrowe··on BitTorrent Turns 20: The File-Sharing Revolution Revisited
My recollection is BitTorrent encryption has mostly nothing to do with real security, and almost everything to do with the cat-and-mouse against ISP middleboxes. Plaintext BitTorrent traffic was highly identifiable and blockable, but even simple obfuscation was enough to avoid them, so simple encryption was adopted.
winthrowe··on Starting in 2023, Windows 11 will require new laptops to have a front webcam
This looks like part of their push to passwordless. Decent camera plus TPM means that FaceID style unphishable FIDO2 credentials can become default moving forward.
winthrowe··on This is what Doom looks like on a holographic display
In my TrackIR config, I move my head left an inch, the projected head moves 6 inches. This is more useful than a even mapping in practice, but solidly breaks the 'looking through a window' illusion.
winthrowe··on This is what Doom looks like on a holographic display
As a TrackIR user, it feels to me like it should be possible to do something like this with the 6dof headtracking data from TrackIR, but basically nobody uses a 1-1 mapping that would produce a camera trick like this.
winthrowe··on Elon Musk’s anti-union tweet from 2018 must be deleted: U.S. labor board
Maybe someone else finds something more recent, but it looks like 20 years ago, unions got options at about half the rate of non union (table 1).

winthrowe··on Shops return to rural Sweden but are now staff-free
My understanding is shrinkage typically refers to the sum total of all product received but unsellable, whether from theft, spoilage, or or breakage.
winthrowe··on 30k U.S. organizations newly hacked via holes in Microsoft Exchange Server
I don't think that's an accusation against you, but I have to imagine there's a Shodan inspired darkweb site somewhere that takes crypto in exchange for bypassing all those noble restrictions.
winthrowe··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
Yes, you can: https://haveibeenpwned.com/DomainSearch
winthrowe··on List of All Current TLDs
CCTLD policies vary, but Canada should be one of the TLDs that this is a reasonable thing to expect: https://www.cira.ca/policy/rules-and-procedures/canadian-pre...
winthrowe··on A word for a value between 0 and 1 (inclusive)
They're equivalent, Raku defines both Ascii compatible and Unicode names for typical operators. I expect they used ≤ because it looks nicer.
winthrowe··on Remote access to production infrastructure (death to the VPN)
I think the point is more to block 1.0 and 1.1.
winthrowe··on Stop donating your customers' data to Google Analytics
This is the 'infamous' original thread in question: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8863
winthrowe··on One-quarter of the world’s pigs died in a year due to swine fever in China
Yes, entire herds are being culled and dumped in mass graves rather than being slaughtered to try to bring the outbreak under control.
winthrowe··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
As a 365 admin, I'm quite certain it's an availability joke.
