winslow··on A glut has used-car depreciation accelerating
Potentially. But I think it's also the fact that dealerships are leasing out the 500e at $99 or even $59 a month for 3 year deals. So why even buy a used 500e when you can get a brand new one for <$100 a month or $1200 a year.
winslow··on Show HN: Marina.io, an open source Docker Hub with ARM support
Awesome. Will definitely be playing with this. One of my biggest frustrations with getting docker on my pi has been the lack of support for arm builds and having to rebuild every image needed (which kind of defeats the purpose of docker hub).
winslow··on A CEO Who Pays Employees to De-Locate from the Bay
Do you have a job board with these postings? I'd be quite interested in researching something like that. Recently was trying to do that with the company I worked for and they were a little timid to do it I also had another offer I wanted them to match so I think the combo made them timid to counter.
winslow··on Home computing for $5/month
I really appreciate the reply! You definitely bring up great points. I suppose that's why we see the bigger names like Disney, Blizzard(Activision), EA, etc building out their own distribution/streaming channels compared to utilizing Netflix/Steam to avoid that 30% and keep a bigger chunk of the revenue. Obviously game sales are different than streaming TV/movies but I'd expect similar economics to be in play.
winslow··on Home computing for $5/month
Can you expand on that? It's an interesting parallel that you draw. I'm going out on a limb and implying you mean that the small price per month is going to eventually implode and engineers aren't going to be making as much money in the future similar to how a musician gets a very small portion of the cost of a music stream?
winslow··on Abandoned Soviet Space Shuttles [video]
For those interested in some video footage of animals in the radioactive zone a decent video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG-nwQBBfmc

TLDW: No massive mutations like VICE teased with the 3 eyed boars etc.

winslow··on Abandoned Soviet Space Shuttles [video]
I expected better from Vice. They were just drunk the entire time and didn't get to see the mutated animals or anything.

I wonder why they keep these shuttles abandoned compared to turning them into museum type pieces. Pretty amazing that these awesome machines are just abandoned on a military base.

winslow··on SpaceX successfully launches and recovers second Falcon 9 in 48 hours
That's pretty cool. Makes sense, especially with stage 1 being so light on re-entry that a single engine would have a TWR > 1.
winslow··on SpaceX successfully launches and recovers second Falcon 9 in 48 hours
Is that TWR (Thrust to Weight Ratio) for when all 9 Merlin engines are lit? Landing burn today had 3 lit if I recall correctly.
winslow··on Snap Inc. Reports First Quarter 2017 Results
While a very small market segment but I've noticed that my user demographic's snap story usage has been in rapid decline. The people whom I saw using snap stories the majority of time, have since cut their usage in half if not completely and switched to Instagram stories.

Going to be very interesting to see how they handle user growth & user engagement.

winslow··on Show HN: Posters of Your GitHub Contributions
That's okay though. Only way to learn is by getting something out there. You're way ahead of the game compared to most people dealing with scaling issues first hand :)

Keep up the good work!

winslow··on Contact Ben Horowitz for $20
So has anyone taken up the offer? If so do you mind sharing what you asked and what the response was?
winslow··on PiBakery – a blocks based, easy to use setup tool for Raspberry Pi
I was disappointed it had nothing to do with Baking ;)

Otherwise it looks good :) Anything that helps lower the barrier to entry for kids and other new comers to the rpi is a good thing in my book.

winslow··on Bored People Quit (2011)
Not sure if I am one the of "bored" ones yet. We have an interesting project at hand with Hadoop but my work just laid off the entire team around me that I was leading. It sure killed any belief I had in the company. I seem to be bored due to not believing in the company.

Great read though! I've been thinking lately how everyone has a bank of energy (morale, drive, enthusiasm, etc) for each job they take. Things like layoffs can use up big chunks of that energy each employee has for the company.

winslow··on The New Panama Canal: A Risky Bet
"Time was another issue. The contract called for the work to be completed in 1,883 days so that the opening would coincide with the 100th anniversary of the canal’s 1914 inauguration."

Boy do I love arbitrary deadlines!

winslow··on Credit-Card Debt Nears $1 Trillion as Banks Push Plastic
So we are back at the subprime lending model. Correct me if I am wrong but from my understanding this is what ultimately caused (or one of the biggest factors along with adjustable rate mortgages) the housing collapse and economic downturn circa 2007/2008. So how is this subprime lending any different via the credit cards?

We could hypothesize that credit card debt won't be as massive as mortgage debt and thus may not cause catastrophic events. However, on the flip side there is little to no collateral in credit card debt that a creditor would get in return of defaulting on your credit loan.

The more I look at credit debt, student loan debt, and fairly recently CDO's (Collateralized Debt Obligation) that banks are doing again we are setting ourselves up for failure again.

Anyone have any thoughts on all this?

winslow··on Uber Is Taking Millions of Manhattan Rides Away from Taxis
Really? Why is that? I would think with recent uptick of Uber that they could change that to make it a competitive playing field.
winslow··on A multigenerational hit: Student debt traps parents and kids
Look into using Hired.com (note: not all that apply get approval).

I used it when switching jobs and it help me land a 50% salary increase. I am not exaggerating that. It showed all the possible salaries that companies were willing to pay me before negotiation and interviews started. It helps show what you may actually be worth to employers. Obviously your milage may vary but 40k is extremely low for computer science. Now it obviously depends how good you are etc. For reference I struggled straight out of school as I did computer science minor with another computer degree as my major. However, once I landed my first job ($65K) it has been upwards every since. Best of luck and reach out if you'd like (or anyone else in a similar position).

winslow··on Adblock Sold to Mystery Company
Would putting it on the DNS work as expected? Hypothetical Example: Two websites have google ads WebsiteA and WebsiteB. I want to support websiteA by allowing google ads on there but not on WebsiteB. The only way to allow google ads to WebsiteA would be from the DNS which would also allow google ads to WebsiteB.

winslow··on 2015 Engineering Salaries Reviewed
While the data is from the Bay Area I find it's correct for my situation working in SoCal for a startup. It is at least a decent gauge to see if you are way below or above the salary ranges. Unfortunately, it won't help someone in a rural area.
winslow··on Disney's Hyperion Renderer
This is mostly due to the two companies being run completely separately. Resources are not shared between the two because Disney Animation is unionized where Pixar is not. It can get messy when you take non union work from Pixar and use Union work at Disney Animation and vice versa.

If they really wanted to dodge the NSA they wouldn't have released a press release about this let alone tell everyone about it. Sounds like a stupid PR stunt to me.

winslow··on Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free
You install the engine through the launcher. At least this is how it works on windows I assume it works similarly on mac.
