winningcontinue··on Learning to Read in Your 30s Profoundly Transforms the Brain
yes, but without the people supporting the local bookstore who will be supporting the independent authors we need to write the books we read. We need both.
winningcontinue··on Surgery students 'losing dexterity to stitch patients'
They just need to overhual the entire profession altogether. Surgeons should just supervise a live surgery, while attending physicians and assistants will do the actual operation. The person with the knowledge and information will oversee and manage the entire procedure, the lower level people will do the actual cutting and sewing. People with more specialized skills doing what they're each better out. Better outcomes.
winningcontinue··on DRM for chargers? Google Pixel 3 locks fast Qi charging to its own stand
Should be your call but laws open them up to liability so they don't allow you to just use anything you want. When something goes wrong, it'd be the phone that explodes and the HTC/Google part of the two companies has deeper pockets.
winningcontinue··on The Marvel API
even on their call page, the credentials are invalid. fail.
winningcontinue··on The rise of the robot farmer
this doesn't sound like it's even in the technology's infancy. prototypes are being drawn up in the labs. they don't understand any drawbacks. when they eventually come up with something, inevitably it'd disappoint and fail. I can't see robots making the complex decisions of harvesting individual plants with all its variables involved, especially at the scale to not fail. This is much more than three years ago. This is a cheer leading fluff piece.
winningcontinue··on We Removed jQuery
Disclaimer 1: We actually didn't totally remove jQuery as we have a few custom features and pages that use it, but for ~99.7% of our pages, it's gone!

Disclaimer 2: The following method isn't something we recommend if you rely heavily on front-end contrib modules, authenticated traffic, or parts of Drupal 7 core that depend on jQuery.

winningcontinue··on Even janitors have noncompetes now
similar jury trial for a commercial case I stood on. But this was outright fraud, in that one business partner accused the others of sending them an enitrely different document than what was read and agreed upon. The plantiff didn't read the contract for many years and didn't notice it until he found out he was missing out on a lot of profits. So yea, for things like your job contract it's worth putting the time in to know what's going on and ask questions.

Bought the phone and sold it at a loss more than a few months later for less than half. Camera is terrible and it did not at all improve with time. Screen to phone ratio was amazing but another drawback nobody mentions was the weight. for a 5 inch phone it weighed more than my previous Nexus 6p. Carrying it in my pocket made it heavy.
winningcontinue··on The next big restaurant chain may not own any kitchens
it's not been free market competition for a long time. I look out at the number of Pret a Mangers that office workers around me go to at lunch. It's like watching pigs going to the troughs to feed. The buildings empty, the pigs go to the next available spot and they return to their pens. They don't really give a shit really how long the lines are. Also fast food employees getting free market wages? They get minimum wage and if they work there for two years, they get a dollar increase to their wage. That's it, there is no lateral promotion.
winningcontinue··on Anything for this: The costs, benefits of life in elite sport
you can make the case that you're watching the people shoot up as an educational entertainment. There's a good group of people who don't know what drug abuse it like up close, watch it and learn from the experience of others. Also maybe the series doesn't create recurring seasons/episodes every year/week like sports leagues.
winningcontinue··on Lessons from the Last Swiss Finishing School
I loved the fact that they pointed out: The women weren't there to earn wealth but to learn how to look like they had inherited it. It's no surprise that there were so many Chinese there. Social status is an very conscious part of their society's psyche.
winningcontinue··on WhatsApp Cofounder Brian Acton on Why He Left $850M Behind
interesting idea that wealth is primarily created by tech innovation. Got a good source of reading on this? How would they address a few people concentrating wealth onto themselves?
winningcontinue··on Why are conversations limited to about four people?
thanks. was wondering how could something upvoted this high be behind a paywall without anyone asking for the paper itself. It's like people read the abstract and choose to discuss what they will.
winningcontinue··on Amazon’s pricing tactic is a trap for buyers and sellers alike
most shocking part is the NDAs with cities for the HQ2 bids require local governments adherence to dynamic pricing contracts. For one CA school district, that system would make them pay 12% more. So on top of the big and extended tax breaks cities have to give to win over Amazon, along with the exceptions to zoning restrictions that most builders have to adhere to, that's not enough. They also have to buy from amazon at inflated prices. Not a bad deal, if you're Amazon.
winningcontinue··on How to Design for the Modern Web
Medium is not doing any type of good job. Going on the website, i'm immediately flooded with a layout of pictures and headlines designed to gain my attention. Clicking on an article, I get two notifications that pop-up regarding their privacy policy and then their premium service. Their entire schtick is designed to distract you and keep you on their site for as long as possible, as part of a scheme to monetize as much out of every visitor. For a much better design, check out something like instapaper or it's competitors.

ROFL that reply to the recruiter. 'You know what they say: In business, you're either the earthquake or the losers falling into the cracks and landing in the hot magma'

winningcontinue··on What the Airline Knows About the Guy in Seat 14C
Privacy invasion and feeling creepy at the airline level is alright. I registered for the flight and paid for it through my ticket checkout. In addition, I'm usually part of their loyalty program when I fly. What I don't appreciate is what happened to me at a high end mall while on vacation in Spain. Walked into the store, the sales person smiled and me and called me by my name. I never met her before and that type of interaction was quite jarring. I was left wondering where have I seen this person for a bit, striking up a friendly conversation to jog my memory. Then she explained that a camera had captured and recognized me through my face on her screen. Creepy.
