windex··on Ask HN: How many of you are consciously downsizing your devices/going retro?
This should have been a user replaceable battery.
windex··on Ask HN: How many of you are consciously downsizing your devices/going retro?
I am moving away from devices that have inbuilt non user replaceable batteries. That's been my single largest gripe over the last couple of years. It also seems to be the easiest method for manufacturers to build in obsolescence into products. Once dead, the product gathers dust with me forgetting the whole cycle of having to get it repaired or serviced.

The other one is headphone sockets in devices. I want wired headsets, not dongles and missing DACs.

Non smart TVs and Displays. No, I do not want internet connectivity built into a display.

windex··on Impulse Induction Stove: boils water in 40s and has backup battery for outages
After having dealt with electronics, what Iam really bothered about is serviceability. Tired of having to toss out stuff that cant be repaired or comes in sizes that aren't standard etc. I am ready to go back to wood stoves.

Fraud becomes easier I guess.
windex··on Charging a lithium battery to 80% only?
If phones with easily replaceable batteries arrive due to legislation, it would be one major win, less waste and more peace of mind.

What happens to all the ChatGPT subscribers now? Sign ups are off the table for the foreseeable future I assume.
windex··on YouTube Premium Price Hike – Ouch
And people act surprised when Piracy starts ticking up. Most subscription services are tending towards cable in pricing with less convenience.

Non repairable devices should be hit with massive environment related taxes.
windex··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
I am hoarding older thinkpads at this point. The soldered RAM ones I am not touching. The older ones are cheap to upgrade and pretty snappy. I havent bought a new laptop since 2009.
windex··on First 'tooth regrowth' medicine moves toward clinical trials in Japan
I've given up on science being able to do anything other than for mice or create a new subscription service for lifelong meds. I suppose actual cures aren't profitable. I am tired of being cynical but that's the cycle we have all been on.
windex··on Louis Rossmann: Autodesk turns lifetime licenses into subscriptions [video]
Subscriptions are a scam. I am actively consolidating my payments and shifting to next best alternatives that give me one time pay options or open source and contributing there.
windex··on The hustle never ends and I'm so over it
I personally think all organizations want to be cults with unthinking followers. I read every inbound piece from "management" like they are propaganda leaflets with an implied threat of violence. It helps.
windex··on Schumer launches ‘all hands on deck’ push to regulate AI
A repeat of healthcare, this time for computing. It's 2023, the commons cant win.
windex··on The art of refurbing old computers
I see companies cycling out laptops in 3 years, and I keep finding many that are still under warranty. Why is this? I've bought a couple of them and I find them to be capable machines. Some of those machines have served me for over 10 years and continue to run except for the keyboards giving way or the CPU cooling going kaput.
windex··on Google Cloud Domains is to be fully deprecated as part of Google Domains sale
I get the feeling that Google's services are only for data harvesting. Once that is done or understood, they shut down the service.
windex··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
I think the next wave will focus on the emergent organization of information and zero shot solutions that some of these models seem to be showing in cases.
windex··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
I think the healthcare industry case in the US is a great example of how regulatory capture works against the consumer.
windex··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
They can only do this in the USA. The battle bottleneck is going to be GPUs and countries that have access to it will leap ahead of the US if arbitrary regulations are put in place to neuter LLMs in the US.
windex··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
Also the deal to make the browsing model to only use Bing. That's bait and switch. I paid for browsing, and now it only browses Bing. They even had the gall to update the plugin name to Browsing with Bing.
windex··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
This is why having opensourced models is important. This is also why a lot of the lobbying around wanting regulation is happening. Imagine this, the plebs get the neutered AI, the people at the top get raw Open AI GPT4+

All while assuming it was super private.
windex··on Lenovo profits sink 75% as PC demand continues nosedive
Lenovo's laptops have begun soldering things to the board making them less desirable.
windex··on India pulls highest-denomination notes from circulation
Nothing seems thought through with some of these policies. A lot of these types of governments see nothing wrong in making normal citizens run through hoops. Increasing amounts of vague rules are being brought in India like the credit card tax launched recently which requires you to go through a claims process at the year end. Last year there was the subscription related disruption on credit cards, etc etc. The list goes on.

Hilarious.

>The gangsters that were killed were a bit like the mafia in that sense

Except that some of them were rival politicians. I'd also want you to look at the number of criminals elected into power before you tell us that "but those killed were criminals, so it's okay." It's systemic rot. Due process doesnt exist in some places and mobs rule.

You see the issue I have with people like you on forums is that you depend on westerners not knowing the details of these things in your country. Your messages appear referenced etc showing that you took time to make those answers, but you seem to miss key points, selectively.

You haven't heard of Uttar Pradesh?

As a casual exercise, I would suggest you look for a graph of lynchings, riots, and raids in India especially of minorities and "others" for varying levels of trivial reasons by groups associated with the ruling party with patronage and overt support from it. Every festival season is open season for riots in many places. Execution style public hit jobs bypassing "due process" on rivals, criminals, and others are becoming more common.

I would also have you take a hard look at the fascist speeches of sitting ministers advocating for violence in India. All of these are documented and the perpetrators and sponsors of this are in government without consequence.

To make matters worse, the administration seems to be gnawing at some independence the supreme court shows by wanting to take over the appointments of Judges. It even gives judges plum positions post retirement for favorable judgements. Need I say more?

Without a course correction, I'll give it 10 years.

windex··on The world’s oldest ultramarathon runner is racing against death
At what point do you think that the advances in age beating tech in Medicine will actually kick in? I keep seeing optimistic headlines about research in mice etc with nothing to show for it later. About 10 years ago, I remember reading about how new research would make dental cavities go away. The same with age related research.

Are there things you are aware of that actually work and are accessible?
