windex··on My weird new hobby: Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps
I love doing this as well. I have something like this running on a large 4k screen. Something about looking up once in a while and seeing some other place, with the sounds of the city seems to appeal to me while working. Even helps me reset from the strange anxieties of modern jobs.
windex··on Used ThinkPad Buyer's Guide (2019)
Anyone have any pointers for sourcing genuine keyboards for thinkpads? I seem to run out of luck with them everytime.
windex··on Gulf States Accept a New Normal in Hormuz: Iran Is in Control
A world screwed by a mouth breathing MAGA cult. I guess democracies should have programmatic indicators when the idiocy levels start increasing. Countries that cross a bunch of "idiocy indicators" will need intervention.

There is something seriously wrong with american system where a felon can become president and steal openly.

windex··on The UK's War on Anonymity Has Come to America
I think we need to counter surveil those in power and their relatives.
windex··on Apple Silicon Exec Explains Mac Mini AI Demand and On-Device Future
You should try Google Edge Gallery and Gemma4 on your local pc
windex··on Show HN: Clawk – Give coding agents a disposable Linux VM, not your laptop
I use a raspberry pi for all my experiments
windex··on Apple Silicon Exec Explains Mac Mini AI Demand and On-Device Future
Yup, for openclaw and APIs you dont need a big PC. I run something lightweight on the RPI4 8gb. Many people run local LLMs which is where a mac is useful. Frankly I dont think you can beat the value of an openrouter subscription and API calls.
windex··on Fable situation update from David Sacks
There was a time I used to listen to the All In Podcast. Then Trump became president and these guys started gloating with glee about all the breakage that Musk and Trump were causing. Was quite the shock to me to see the all out happiness. That's when I stopped listening to Sacks and his crowd.
windex··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
They asked for a global AI moratorium and got one. Funny how things work out. Best of luck with the IPO.
windex··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
This is the kind of supply risk everyone should plan for. Depending exclusively on one country, one provider, or one model is not going to cut it anymore. I'd double down on improving opensource local models even more and getting harnesses, routers, and testing right.

The Trump administration should focus on things like the UFC fight etc.

This also looks like the perfect China shaped gap in the market if there ever was one.

windex··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
Windows 11 is what happens when no one speaks up at product team meetings. People nod their heads, get on with the build and the marketing team decides they want another 40 hooks into customer data for monetization.

Windows 11 today is a spectacular example of customer disrespect and disregard. MS believes it can manage with enterprise customer revenue alone. Well, best of luck with that, even enterprises are getting fed up.

windex··on I am building a cloud
Yes and an LLM checks it as well. I am yet to find a sysadmin task that an LLM couldn't solve neatly.
windex··on The noise we make is hurting animals. Can we learn to shut up?
During the Covid lockdowns in India, I saw birds I had not seen in decades. It was amazing; the skies had cleared up, and nature truly was recovering.
windex··on Ask HN: How is AI-assisted coding going for you professionally?
I moved out of software things myself and now do things around the home and outside more and more.
windex··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
A lot of people are finding the Mac Neo very interesting given how unfriendly the whole Win11 experience has become. Either MS learns or the market teaches them the same lessons IBM learnt.
windex··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
With the Mac neo, some of us will not have to tolerate Win 11. They were forcing us to upgrade, well, they made people upgrade to the Mac neo. An all metal Apple notebook that isn't actively user hostil is a massive quality upgrade for most people.
windex··on Ask HN: How is AI-assisted coding going for you professionally?
>so you can make fries and ketchup from the same plant!

We should be friends. I like your ideas.

windex··on Right-sizes LLM models to your system's RAM, CPU, and GPU
What I do is i ask claude or codex to run models on ollama and test them sequentially on a bunch of tasks and rate the outputs. 30 minutes later I have a fit. It even tested the abliterated models.
windex··on Will vibe coding end like the maker movement?
Far more people are coding and participating and creating things now than before. Doesn't matter what you call it. There is enough excitement.
windex··on U.S. Deports Nine Migrants in Secret, Ignoring Legal Protections
The US' honor system hasn't worked out with this level of rule breaking and brazen corruption. The Nazis seem to be on their way back to power.
windex··on CLI agents make self-hosting on a home server easier and fun
I had problems with tailscale being flaky about a year ago and it would stop responding taking down networking with it. I've since ripped it out and went with a VPS based wireguard for all PCs and mobiles. Stable since then.
windex··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Summary: Venezuela just lost its oil.
windex··on Global software engineering job postings outlook – 2026
India has a huge fake jobs problem. I think it is because of the number of "HR consultants" who constantly need to refresh their databases with "fresh" resumes. I've seen the same jobs being posted for over 8 years with no change whatsoever other than the keyword updates.
windex··on Why were all stories about the '60 minutes' leak removed from HN?
That's fine IF tech stays out of politics, but that's not the case anymore. US tech bros are buying themselves policy with this administration.

If tech is influencing politics and consequently, all of us, why should there be an asymmetry when the tech plebs want to talk politics?

windex··on Why were all stories about the '60 minutes' leak removed from HN?
I see a similar theme with most techbros or rich VC groups. They say they dont like politics but they move fast to influence policy by buying influence. See what's happening with Trump and the tech companies.

What tech connected leaders really hate is the plebs being informed and having an opinion on policy. I see the same thing with the All-In podcast. All round glee on that podcast with things that negatively impact the working classes.

Billionaires are for billionaires while controlling the media.

windex··on 'Ghost jobs' are on the rise – and so are calls to ban them
Atleast in Europe there are some basic rules around data collection. In places like India, linkedin is a free for all vacuuming up resume data. I've seen the same jobs on linkedin appear for nearly 4 years with no changes and hundreds of people applying every week.

You cant flag it on linkedin either. I guess LinkedIn's business model likes the fake job postings.

windex··on AI helps ship faster but it produces 1.7× more bugs
I think devs have now split into two camps, the kvetchers and the shippers. It's a new tool, it's fresh. Things will work itself out over the next couple of years/months(?). The kvetching helps keep AI research focused on the problem which is good. Meanwhile continue to ship.
windex··on Vibe coding creates fatigue?
This is why I document my ideas and then go for a walk. It also helps me stay within the quota limits.
windex··on AI agents are starting to eat SaaS
I dont think any opinion right now is going to be definitive. This is like mixing paint, the edges are still white, while the centre is colored.

What Iam seeing is that customers are delaying purchases of large expensive software. Prime example; SAP. ECC migrations to SaaS model RISE/GROW-PublicCloud are stalling, same with onprem S4 to RISE. I see a whole bunch of my customers instead go with retaining the core but modernize surround apps with intelligent custom apps without feature bloat. For now, SAP/oracle/whatever remains the system of record, the edges are going away. I guess the same is likely happening in other spaces.

This change is coming. Definitely. The current moats around SaaS will fall and the alternate ecosystem might not have moats at all.

windex··on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration
Google's interface, UX and information flow is complete spaghetti. You never know what you will find and where. There is no one you can call either. I suspect they abandon their products because 50% of potential customers abandon their cart due to the workflow.
