whorleater··on Attention Economy Is a Malthusian Trap
One could argue cloud services is just a mall for computers (VMs), computing services (managed databases), or computing time (serverless offerings).
whorleater··on The creeping IT apocalypse
My bad, I should've clarified "IT" in the NA sense.
whorleater··on The creeping IT apocalypse
How many solid universities still have IT programs? At UIUC as of 2016, the IT program was nonexistent.
whorleater··on How to teach Git
judging by the atrocious management of remote history I've seen at workplaces, "making work presentable" is pretty far down the line of priorities
whorleater··on Ask HN: How did you escape your safe 9-5 job?
I love this response so much because it encapsulates a SO style response of "why are you soon X, you should do Y instead". The person asked about how to escape from a job he perceived as meaningless and safe, not a job everyone perceived as meaningless and safe.
whorleater··on Generate your document site in 3 seconds
It's a static site generator
whorleater··on Algorithms, by Jeff Erickson
CS 598 JGE with jeffe which covered more advanced and niche algorithms was 10000% the most impactful cs class I've ever taken.
whorleater··on JIRA is an antipattern
>I'm not sure it's fair to criticize Atlassian for failing to fix the majority of dysfunctional organizations out there.

when JIRA is marketed by Atlassian as the tool that will make your dysfunctional organization functional, then yes, it definitely is fair

whorleater··on An Epidemic of Loneliness in America?
Letters to the editor are internet comments before internet comments were a thing. The intent was to display variety of opinions relating to a topic so you weren't beholden to just the newspaper's stance. Not totally sure why they continue to publish letters, I suppose they're usually higher quality than internet comments because they require more effort.
whorleater··on Going to university does not broaden the mind
This article literally says that while going to university does not make you a more well-rounded person (if we use "well-rounded" as a proxy for "broadened mind"), working makes you a less well-rounded person.
whorleater··on Python Data Visualization 2018: Why So Many Libraries?
I used root in astrophysics for a couple things, but that's hardly outside it's intended audience. yt is generally considered to be easier to pick up now instead though.
whorleater··on Transitioning Google Cloud leadership after three great years
Have you been using the same cloud abstraction tools I have? Terraform and Kubernetes all require more effort in dealing with cloud providers, not less.
whorleater··on China's brightest children are being recruited to weaponize AI
This comment is so incredibly patronizing ("oh it's good to hear you're one of the good Chinese") that I'd be insulted if I wasn't laughing so much.
whorleater··on China's brightest children are being recruited to weaponize AI
I'm Chinese and I can confirm that I am, in fact, a bloodthirsty monster fueled by vengeance as GP commented. In fact I am building a next-gen killbot in my basement as we speak. My education from the Chinese system has left me with no capability for individual thought and zero perspective of the outside world, and therefore all my fellow Chinese citizens are driven by stereotypical perceptions of Chinese culture, as Western internet commenters describe.
whorleater··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 iOS app
You shouldn't, but there's some vague notion that giant corporations have taken over the net and fighting against it is actively harming your privacy more than it helps. Is cloudflare better than your {ISP, self hosted, Google, etc} DNS servers? That's probably for an individual to decide.
whorleater··on Cloud Computing Without Containers
It's important to note that for caching purposes, you can already run VCL (Varnish Cache Language) on Fastly's edge servers.
whorleater··on In Amazon Go, no one thinks I'm stealing
I wonder if minorities shop online more often due to wanting to avoid racial profiling.
whorleater··on Sqlite: Code Of Conduct
>Your service to humankind may as well be a service to Christ.

You cannot say this and believe that this CoC is inclusive then.

whorleater··on Sqlite: Code Of Conduct
Because half the comments in this thread are saying it's satire?
whorleater··on iPhones are hard to use
>Also simple would be intelligent alerts for data usage, including alerts for apps that are known to use large amounts of data

Besides a user curated version of this, how would your phone know which apps use a lot of data? Sure, we can probably knock out youtube/Netflix/spotify, but then:

1. You really don't think Youtube/Netflix/Spotify are going to complain that Apple, by default, discourages people from using their app?

2. I'm personally uncomfortable with the idea of my phone collecting how much data I'm using per app and sending it back to Apple. Privacy is one of the reasons I buy an iPhone.

3. Setting this up leads to some very shaky experiences. How do dual sims work? What about data-only/voice only sims?

4. Bizarrely, some carriers bill traffic differently. T-Mobile, for example, bills Netflix traffic differently than other traffic.

This isn't a bad notion, but a blanket pop up actually has a ton of competing interests going into it.

whorleater··on Sqlite: Code Of Conduct
Because if you take it as a satirization of the adoption of CoC's, it's saying "we don't think CoC's address real problems and we'll do it with a general set of ideals that do nothing to solve problems".

Which ignores the very real problem of harassment in tech.

whorleater··on The Google Pixel 3 Is a Very Good Phone. But Maybe Phones Have Gone Too Far
I really don't know how to feel about this article, because it's barely a review of a phone, and more of a review of phone culture. The actual review of a phone is only a smidge more than a press release ("call screening is cool! cameras are good!"), but then it makes some nice digressions into phone culture, yet never seems to reach a satisfying conclusion?

I suppose this says something about the state of phones where "reviews" can basically be anything cause all smartphones are pretty much the same now.

whorleater··on You Want 20% for Handing Me a Muffin? The Awkward Etiquette of iPad Tipping
When I waited in college this sort of thing happened all the time, but that's kinda beside the point. I guess to me it's weird that tips convey a sense of whether someone "deserves" their wage, whereas there's nothing really dictating why a waiter "deserves" their money more than the cashier at a grocery store. Minimum wage jobs are minimum wage jobs, so is there a particular reason for the custom of tipping (beyond the usual "tipping helps a subset of people make more than minimum wage").
whorleater··on You Want 20% for Handing Me a Muffin? The Awkward Etiquette of iPad Tipping
This is a weird just world view though, because tips are a lagging indicator of job performance more than anything. If you accept the notion that you get tipped less because you are a poor job performer, what is the point of laws that force employers to make up your wages to minimum wage?
whorleater··on You Want 20% for Handing Me a Muffin? The Awkward Etiquette of iPad Tipping
"Employers make up to min wage if you don't get tipped enough" is the biggest joke, because if you don't get enough tips by the end of the night a few times, employers will often slowly push you out by only offering you unfavorable shifts, or outright fire you in states with poor labor protections.
whorleater··on It’s better to be born rich than gifted
Donating $5 million to get one kid into an university allows a new lab to be built. Or more scholarships to be offered for lower income students. Or better quality of life overall for the students on the campus. It feels slimy and unfair in that someone can just buy their way into college, but unless we start funding colleges in a much more sustainable way in the US, I'm okay with donation based admissions.
whorleater··on Business networking for nerds (2017)
Juniper switches are the only ones for me
whorleater··on U.S. Robocall Data
I think traditional spam (the "Nigerian price" type stuff) is on the outs these days, but phishing/spear-phishing is definitely more popular than ever.
whorleater··on Trump Just Signed a Law That Changes Life Aboard Airlines
At least for the major US airlines (Delta, United, AA):

- Group 0/pre-boarding is active military, disabled, and infants

- Group 1 is first class & mileage club people

- Group 2 is business class

- Group 3/4 is usually economy

- Group 5 is usually the cheapest basic economy people

You can usually get bumped up to Group 2 by getting the airline's credit card or having a bunch of miles

whorleater··on Competition is hotting up in the coffee industry
"Hotting up" is a British idiom meaning the same as "heating up". The economist is British. Not everyone speaks American English.
