whatthesmack··on Beginning May 3, 2023, U.S. travelers flying within US will need 'RealID'
That's what they said for the last five (or something) deadlines...
whatthesmack··on Lula Narrowly Wins Brazil’s Presidency
> Ffs, Lula isn’t “a criminal”. He was convicted by a corrupted federal judge, as our Supreme Court decided.

Important to note that some consider the leftist Supreme Federal Court to be the corrupt one in this instance. They literally banned social media speech that claimed Lula is corrupt.

whatthesmack··on The United States’ Unamendable Constitution
Why should the rest of the country subsidize your state's more burdensome tax regime? Removal of the SALT deduction just brings the federal tax code a bit closer to neutrality. If you choose to live in a place with high taxes, that's fine, but don't expect everyone else to help subsidize it.
whatthesmack··on Tesla’s ban on pro-union shirts is illegal and must be rescinded, NLRB rules
There are multiple perspectives within the issue, and labor is not the only perspective. And since it's the relations board, we can assume they're engaging with another party: employers. Why should the people providing the jobs not have a voice?
whatthesmack··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
That's not the Second Amendment. That's the NFA. The Second Amendment is very clear with its intent ("shall not be infringed"). It's the opinion of some folks that we have laws, like the NFA, that violate the Second Amendment.
whatthesmack··on Ask HN: Is there anything I can do with an Apple Watch without an iPhone?
Just did this for my 5 y/o with a cellular-capable Apple Watch Series 5, so when we go to a theme park soon we can track him if he gets lost and call him if needed. It's $10/mo extra on my AT&T unlimited plan and the watch gets its own phone number that can receive calls like any phone. Highly impressed with this functionality Apple and mobile providers have offered!
whatthesmack··on Florida governor signs bill stripping Disney of self-governing authority
This bill has nothing to do with free speech.

Disney--a massive two-faced out-of-state for-profit corporation that is silent on China's abuse of Uygur populations in Xinjiang--had special privileges that only local governments are usually afforded. This bill eliminates the special privileges of this and other similar districts.

This has been a long standing issue that many have wanted resolved. Disney has been known to abuse their privileges and avoid a massive amount of taxes they otherwise would have owed.

If it weren't for Disney advocating against the bill that bans sex-related teaching for K-3rd grade, there might not have been the political will to make this happen. But Disney exercised their free speech rights. And Floridians, through their elected politicians, eliminated an unfair business advantage of a massive out-of-state for-profit corporation. Democracy at work!

whatthesmack··on Why I'll never use Affirm again
> Disputing a negative hit to your credit score does not mean it gets removed.

I believe it usually does get removed immediately, but temporarily, until the credit reporting agency (CRA) has come to a decision on the case.

I've heard of folks closing on mortgages soon and out of nowhere, a past dispute winds up on their credit report as a negative item, putting the mortgage closing at risk. So they immediately dispute it to resolve the issue in the short-term.

whatthesmack··on Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?
I have been diagnosed with social anxiety, general anxiety, and depression. I've always felt socially awkward and shy. However, at 35 years of age I was finally diagnosed as ADHD-PI (predominantly inattentive). Treating that has basically eliminated the social anxiety and shyness, since it seems those existed through the lens of the untreated ADHD-PI. I'm still me and am surely introverted, but I can function in a social setting without feeling awkward or shy... the interaction feels natural and honest. While the folks around me noticed a bit of change, I noticed an enjoyment of life that I never seemed to experience before. I feel I am a better father to my children, which is the most meaningful part of the change to me.
whatthesmack··on [dead]
There's really little else to say to folks that don't respect others' right to speech they don't like or agree with.

The natural right to free speech is so important that it is explicitly called out in the very first of many constitutional amendments, which makes it fundamental to the USA.

It's really not unreasonable to refer to somebody who disagrees with this fundamental natural and human right, which has been a tradition in the USA, as being "anti-American".

Nobody has a right to be free from speech or ideas they disagree with.

whatthesmack··on VW fired senior employee after they raised cyber security concerns
I get this when using iCloud Private Relay. Not sure if it applies to you, but turning off the relay feature fixed the issue for me.
whatthesmack··on U.S. Political Party Preferences Shifted Greatly During 2021
> The religious right used it all the time after all.

I'm not sure about the accuracy of this, but it is attempting to use past bad behavior to justify current bad behavior.

You can't change the past. You can do something about what's happening right now. A lot of rational people want to cancel "cancel culture" right now because of the harm it inflicts on society.

whatthesmack··on U.S. Political Party Preferences Shifted Greatly During 2021
Except that nearly 100% of political donations from Twitter employees go to Democrats, so it is Democrat-aligned people making the decision about who get silenced and who gets high visibility on Twitter, which influences the extremists that try to get people fired. Heck, Democrat politicians have directly advocated this sort of activity, including physical violence.

Electing Republicans might get Section 230 updated to require platforms to be platforms and not a mix of all the benefits of platforms and none of the downsides of being publishers that are not neutral in silencing certain perspectives.

whatthesmack··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
Are you referring to all the children that were mistakenly given the live poliovirus from the first round of polio vaccines?
whatthesmack··on Youth suicide attempts soared during pandemic, CDC report says
> They show around 70-80% protection (with 3 doses for Omicron, 2 for earlier variants)

That protection level lasts for about two months and then nosedives to uselessness[0].

If we keep pumping people with boosters, the manufacturers and the media aren't going to be able to keep suppressing reporting about the resulting heart issues the mRNA vaccines cause in many people[1].

Again, the vaccines are astoundingly leaky and were designed for a variant of the virus that hasn't existed in any meaningful way for a while.

People with only natural immunity from any variant are shown to have much better protection than mRNA vaccinated and boosted people[2].

whatthesmack··on Seattle police faked radio chatter about Proud Boys during 2020 protests
To clarify, most Capitol tourists are still in pre-trial detention and facing illegal punishments like being denied necessary medical care. The media doesn't like those people, so naturally they haven't been covering the human rights abuses at all, which is why you may not have heard about it.

However, you may be thinking of the people that participated in the BLM/Antifa riots of 2020 who did spend a week in jail before they were bailed out by aligned political parties and subsequently had their charges dropped by politically aligned DAs.

whatthesmack··on Leaked Scripps records reveal automated mark-ups for hospital care
Why is it better? Non-profits don't have the efficiency incentive that for-profits do, as far as I understand it. I've read a few things that indicate non-profit hospitals are full of fiscal bloat, because there's no incentive to act otherwise. On mobile now, but can search for a few sources.
whatthesmack··on University of Florida bars professors from testifying in a voting rights case
> we don't have any voter fraud to speak of

You probably mean you're not aware of any voter fraud.

The whole objective of fraud is to have it not be discovered, so it's possible fraud has in fact been occurring and it has not yet been discovered (and/or nobody in a position to do so is interested in discovering it).

whatthesmack··on Gov Parson pushes to prosecute reporter who found security flaw in state site
There's bad, ignorant people on all sides of the political spectrum. There are plenty of people just like this governor that are in the other camp.

It's not useful to use a ridiculous situation like this as confirmation of your political beliefs.

whatthesmack··on Southwest operational meltdown as hundreds of flights canceled or delayed
What about people who can't get medical care like cancer treatments, because hospitals are firing people with natural immunity who don't need (and thus refuse) the vaccine?
whatthesmack··on Facebook Whistleblower Leaks Thousands of Pages of Incriminating Internal Docs
How is that "alt-right" (whatever that means) or a "conspiracy theory"?

It is a direct connection that would be looked into by anybody, including Facebook, who is investigating the information Frances leaked.

whatthesmack··on The US military has placed Lt Col Scheller behind bars
> Not surprised - he has clear mental issues

That's not fair to say.

He asked for accountability from military leadership that knowingly left Americans in enemy territory and executed a drone strike that killed children & civilians.

Thus far, the only accountability has been his removal from his position, which he already knew would happen when he made his initial recording.

He sounds like the only sane one in this scenario.

whatthesmack··on Tech billionaire: Facebook is what's wrong with America
What you're referring to is the theory. What you're replying to is the reality. Communism as implemented always results in an upper class and "everybody else". This was true for the Soviet Union, is true for China, and is true for Cuba.
whatthesmack··on OSHA to require employers with 100 employees vaccinate or test workforce
Isn't this very different, though?

Historically, mandated vaccines weren't mandated before we knew they were safe longer-term. We're still awaiting FDA approval for a majority of the available SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in the US, yet many folks would be mandated to receive one.

Many folks will see this as being mandated to be a test subject, which is why there has been substantial legal pushback against the mandate less than 24 hours after Biden announced it.

whatthesmack··on Wikipedia's ivermectin talk page shows editors' mayhem
India would like a word with you about that.
whatthesmack··on ERs backed up with ivermectin overdosers while gunshot victims wait: Oklahoma DR
> Ivermectin is not human medicine [...]

This misinformation, promoted by NPR, needs to stop. Lives are on the line.

Scientists who developed ivermectin won the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2015 for its use in humans. Here are some historical statistics on it's use in humans:

https://clincalc.com/DrugStats/Drugs/Ivermectin

Please learn the facts about this medicine. Here's a good summary that explains a bit about the politically partisan folks intentionally talking about the horse formulation of ivermectin, which some people have apparently tried to use:

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/ivermectin-explained...

Again, ivermectin is used in people. Some say it's one of the tools that helped India with respect to the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2.

whatthesmack··on GoDaddy is cutting off Texas Right to Life’s abortion ‘whistleblowing’ website
Thanks for the stereotypical reply to this issue. The linked article is condescending and smug, and nobody with anything better to do will read past the first few sentences with the author's "unique" opinion on Section 230.

Do you have anything reasonable that describes the position that Section 230 somehow doesn't mean what it plainly says?

whatthesmack··on Zoom court hearing postponed after accused found in same location as witness
I wouldn't say that only the state is capable of helping. Most organizations that help in these situations currently in the US are private, often faith-based, and non-profit.

Also to mention... to challenge preconceptions about who's behind this stuff, the current US president (who many would consider "liberal" or "leftist") made great efforts and progress toward locking up lots of people ("tough on crime"), especially minorities, in the past. The last president (who many would consider more to the right of the political spectrum) actually did a lot to reform and fix that, especially for minorities.

whatthesmack··on Handful of cities driving urban greenhouse gas emissions
This ignores the nuance that 500m of China's population lives a poor life in the countryside and are not really contributors to China's massive CO2 emissions. If you look at folks living in or near cities, China's per-capita numbers outpace those of the US by a wide margin. In other words... China has more polluting behavior to correct per-capita where the polluting occurs than the US does.
whatthesmack··on The Case Against the Covid-19 Lab Leak Theory
There wasn't general agreement either. There was a propaganda piece architected by Peter Daszak (Leader of EcoHealth Alliance, who Fauci's NIAID contracted with for gain-of-function research at WIV after Obama banned it), signed by a few scientists, and The Lancet published. The "general agreement" many folks may be thinking of is the general agreement amongst mainstream and social media that a lab leak shouldn't even be investigated and anybody that suggested doing so was a maniac.
