wharfjumper··on Ask HN: Did Twilio abandon SendGrid?
Would you be willing to share your requirements?
wharfjumper··on Ask HN: What do you consider the best way to protect a SaaS from bots?
Hi

We're developing a product in this area and I'd love to discuss some ideas with you. Email me if interested (details in profile).

wharfjumper··on Ask HN: Is Unlimited PTO a Scam
In most organisations where I've worked, there are a number of people who have very large leave balances that have to be forced to take time off. This presumably wouldn't occur where there is unlimited PTO because there is no liability accruing.
wharfjumper··on Anybody else thought about switching to/trying the Edge browser for a second?
Yes. It is my primary source of news from which I discover something useful at least once a week.
wharfjumper··on Ask HN: Which headset do you use for work?
I use these too and recommend them. They connect to phone and laptop simultaneously which is handy. And they have a busy indicator on the headset which I've waited years for. Rotating the microphone boom up mutes them which is also useful. Not noise cancelling microphone though so probably not suitable for noisy environments.

wharfjumper··on Show HN: I made an all-in-one desktop app with a no-BS approach to get work done
I would try this app but use Linux desktop exclusively
wharfjumper··on Ask HN: How do I stop companies from scraping my site?
CloudFlare Turnstile may help. Presumably it would require some coding by you to only display content once the test is passed by the client. I am not affiliated with CloudFlare in any way. [1] https://www.cloudflare.com/products/turnstile/
wharfjumper··on Ask HN: Work for mgr who's never heard of Joel Spolsky?
Been in tech for 3 decades. Use Stack Overflow almost daily. Embarrassed to admit I've never before heard of Joel Spolsky.
wharfjumper··on Atlassian Acquires Loom
So someone spent $205m in 2021 and got $133m back in 2023? My guess is that Atlassian does a similar write down in a few years time. I hope the winners in this deal try to make the world a better place.
wharfjumper··on The Rules of Margin Collapse
Ardour[1] is Digital Audio Workstation software with a GPLv2 licence. Surprised I've never heard of it before. [1] https://ardour.org

wharfjumper··on ServiceNow Insecure Access Control to Full Admin Takeover
Can you elaborate? A customer is in the process of implementing (Tokyo version?) it and it seems to have an intuitive, responsive UI. I'm judging it against Atlassian and Oracle EBS so I have low expectations.
wharfjumper··on Ask HN: Is there an e-commerce platform that doesn't suck?
Do you (or anyone) have feedback about Odoo? I've read quite a bit of bad feedback online.

wharfjumper··on Show HN: Similarity Search Engine for Equities
How is the similarity score calculated? Nike and Google have about the same similarity score relative to Apple.
wharfjumper··on Show HN: Similarity Search Engine for Equities
Apparently a 10-K is a detailed financial report for US public companies https://www.investopedia.com/terms/1/10-k.asp
wharfjumper··on Molly White Tracks Crypto Scams. It’s Going Just Great
I think the logical flaw is in the assumption that AML checks are a bug in traditional money transfer systems when in fact they are a government-imposed feature (largely following on from September 11 and the expanded scope of the FATF[1]). Therefore the same rules will eventually apply to cryptocurrency financial transactions negating many of the advantages that an unregulated process has when compared to a regulated one.

So the real question is: what is the technological benefit offered by decentralized ledger-type technologies versus traditional ones? The answer for many is that the technology is much worse in fundamental ways. Additionally the governance issues of a decentralized system or organization are very challenging to address.

wharfjumper··on Microsoft plugging more ads into Windows 11 Start Menu
I hope Microsoft continues to degrade Windows which will result in improved competition.
wharfjumper··on Deposit insurance maximization as a service
Too many words for my limited brainpower.
wharfjumper··on Ask HN: WWYD? Built a company valued at $1B and may walk away with nothing
You ask "WWYD?". I would secure the funding and then leave immediately.

But my opinion is irrelevant. What you should do depends on what's important to you. Money, health, family, career, status, mission etc. You have achieved something incredible and learned more than you can probably appreciate right now. I wish you well.

wharfjumper··on The day Windows died
This is not my experience either personally, or with my 70yo father in law, or employees all running Linux distros. The experience is excellent apart from battery life. My son who games on Windows hates its constant random 100% CPU usage and compulsory reboots.
