weston··on Ask HN: Your thoughts on returning to college to “refresh” a career?
Oregon State also has an online computer science post-bacc program. I believe it's the same degree that on-campus students receive. You can do it full time in one year or take one course a semester and do it in four years. I believe the course is about 28k total iirc.
weston··on Ask HN: Recommended CRM solution for a SaaS startup?
Thanks for the shoutout! For OP - Streak (YC S11) works on both Gmail and G Suite and we have both free and paid versions. Give me a holler at weston(at)streak(dot)com with any questions! I'm on the support side and would be glad to help.
weston··on One Hundred Books in April from Hacker News
No idea, but either way, I agree that it's a great book! I'll be sure to check out that other one, thanks for the rec!
weston··on One Hundred Books in April from Hacker News
Hey OP,

Great website! I read a book that was recommended on HN probably 6 or 7 years ago and I've spent the longest time trying to remember the name of it. My local library that I borrowed it from doesn't keep checkout history records so they couldn't look it up for me.

I looked at your website and sorted by all-time and found it: "Winning Through Intimidation" by Robert Ringer! I had even remembered the turtle on the cover but still couldnt't find it by Googling. Thanks for the site!

weston··on Juicero Is Shutting Down
Even founders of failed startups deserve a chance to relax.
weston··on The Odin Project – Learn Web Development for Free
Odin, iirc, is for people who are more self-guided. Viking seems to be for those who need more help (mentors, tutors, etc.)
weston··on The Decline of Investment in San Francisco Startups
Couldn't a company that big add a second office in Oakland?
weston··on Tesla drops 7% after Goldman Sachs says the stock is worth $180
You could also invest in the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) fund, which is an ETF of 365 tech stocks.
weston··on How Hunter S. Thompson Became a Legend
It's called Gonzo journalism and Hunter S. Thompson popularized the style in the 1970s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonzo_journalism).
weston··on How Hunter S. Thompson Became a Legend
"Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" is one of the best books I've ever read. I made the mistake of reading it on an airplane on my first trip out to Las Vegas. The book is so funny that I'm sure the people sitting next to me thought I had a few screws loose because I kept laughing so hard.
weston··on Ask HN: How can I experience SF and Silicon Valley in two weeks?
Rent a car and drive down to Santa Cruz and walk along the beach. Also, go hiking in Big Basin State Park, which is very close to Santa Cruz.
weston··on Nearly half of Houston's 2017 valedictorians were once ESL students
From the article:

"In the Houston ISD, nearly half of this year's highest-ranking students once struggled to speak English, making them among the largest groups of non-native English speakers to be named valedictorians and salutatorians by the district since 2007. About 44 percent of Class of 2017 graduates were once English-language learners, the district reports."

"While Spanish speakers make up the bulk of English-language learners, there are about 100 different languages spoken by students and families in HISD."

weston··on ‘The Wire’ – Game Day
Excellent read. Still arguably the greatest tv show ever made. The Wire is essentialy a classic Russian novel but in the television medium.
weston··on UH Researchers Report New, More Efficient Catalyst for Water Splitting
Hi Dang, I submitted the article. I was trying to use the r/futurology article title which was, "University of Houston physicists have discovered a catalyst that can split water into hydrogen and oxygen, composed of easily available, low-cost materials and operating far more efficiently than previous catalysts, reported in the Proceedings of the Natural Academy of Sciences."

HN has an 80 character limit for titles so I had to cut it down drastically from that.

weston··on Sprint, SoftBank Said in Informal Deal Talks With T-Mobile
After reading Tim Wu's "The Master Switch" a few years ago, this can only be bad for consumers leading to less choices in the marketplace. Just one step closer to returning to the monopoly days of Ma Bell.

More competition leads to better innovation and better pricing for consumers.

weston··on Longreads is increasing reporting
Same here, I love Longform! I save them to my Instapaper and read them when I have downtime or am stuck somewhere (like a waiting room).
weston··on Ask Jessica Livingston: If Founders at Work were written today, who'd be in it?
She could also focus specifically on YC companies and their success and/or failure stories.
weston··on Ask Jessica Livingston: If Founders at Work were written today, who'd be in it?
I thought the best chapter was on Phillip Greenspun of ArsDigita. Phillip was forced out of his own startup by his board and he eventually maneuvered behind the scenes to regain control.

If there's a "Founders At Work 2.0", more stories about failures, mistakes, and how people learned from those failures+mistakes would be super helpful. Most startups aren't an overnight success or a unicorn with "rocketship" style growth. Learning more about the non-sexy, non-linear successes can be just as useful than reading about the unicorns.

weston··on Behind the Scenes of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel
Canada actually has a lot of organized crime (Sicilian & Calabrian mafia groups as well as biker gangs like the Hells Angels), it just isn't reported on much in the States. Not all drugs flow through Mexico: Cocaine often moves across the Atlantic from South America directly to the port cities of Toronto, Montreal, and Hamilton. Interestingly enough a lot of that cocaine then flows south to the US from Canada to cities like New York and Detroit.

The US-Canada border is more than twice the size of the US-Mexico border, yet has only 1/10th the amount of Border Patrol agents.

Canada has very lax anti-organized crime laws compared to the US, which is why the mafia has been able to thrive up there. Google the Rizzuto crime family for more info.

weston··on Dropbox Secures $600M Credit Line Ahead of Expected IPO
Lots of negativity in here, but I'll say I really enjoy how incredibly simple Dropbox is and has remained since it launched.

It's so easy to explain how it works to my non-techie parents ("It's just another folder on your computer, except it backs up your data automatically").

I hope Dropbox continues to thrive.

weston··on Uber to Suspend Autonomous Tests After Arizona Accident
That's "news" for the majority of publishers in 2017: Clickbait headline designed to generate traffic to sell ads. Actual journalism and content becomes secondary.

It makes you appreciate actual journalism.

weston··on $100k to move your startup to Austin, TX
The real headline of the article is "Five entrepreneurs get free plane tickets to pitch for $100,000 in seed funding from Austin’s top angel investors"
weston··on 'Once Upon A Time In America': A Butchered Film Rising Up As A Phoenix
If you like this movie, I highly recommend the book it's based off of: "The Hoods" by Harry Grey.
weston··on Ask HN: Non-technical readers of HN, why are you here?
Good question: I'm fascinated by startups and I came across HN and I've been reading this site since around 2010. I now work for Streak (YC S11) in support and I'm learning web dev on the side.

Also, even if a reader of HN isn't a hacker, there are tons of interesting articles about technology and other topics that are interesting as well.

weston··on Georgia Tech Offers Online Master of Science in Analytics Degree for Under $10K

weston··on Ask HN: What are the best books on startups that discuss failure?
Great, I'll check it out!
weston··on Ask HN: What are the best books on startups that discuss failure?
Awesome, thanks for the recommendation!
weston··on Ask HN: What are the best books on startups that discuss failure?
Thanks for the book recommendation! The books I'm looking for don't have to 100% focus on failure, but just include it in the overall story.
