webwielder2··on The data center boom is concentrated in the U.S.
[flagged]
webwielder2··on Oliver Sacks put himself into his case studies – what was the cost?
I actually set that book down while reading it and said, “this sounds made up.” Ahh the quiet satisfaction of witnessless vindication.
webwielder2··on A Lawless Nation – Friends don't let friends visit America
Re-electing Trump is the world's biggest own goal since Bush decided to invade Iraq based on vibes.
webwielder2··on How to draw an outline in a video game
Side note, whatever happened with the great Unity pricing debacle? Did developers end up moving en masse to Unreal and Godot? Or were Unity’s walkbacks and contrition sufficient to keep it a going concern?
webwielder2··on Brazilian velvet ant is ultrablack
The number of variations produced by evolution is truly astonishing. Dizzying to think of every species of the past 500 million years that we will never know.
webwielder2··on How did human butts evolve to look that way?
Man is rivaled only by horse in quantity and quality of butt.
webwielder2··on What happened to the world's largest tube TV? [video]
Interesting to see what people are passionate about.
webwielder2··on The Power Mac 4400
6400 on the other hand was up there with the Color Classic, Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, and PowerBook 500 as objects of 90s pre-Jobs desire.
webwielder2··on How We Got the Lithium-Ion Battery
Invented by Ford and Exxon. Can’t make it up.
webwielder2··on The rectangular cows of Art UK (2018)
People think that art from the past must have all been done by masters, but just as with any pursuit at any time, most practitioners are mediocre to bad.
webwielder2··on Marine worms made at least some trace fossil burrows called Bifungites
(1858)
webwielder2··on Stapler: I remade a 32 year old classic Macintosh app
One could do anything far less conveniently.

webwielder2··on Divers discover Roman mosaic
The algorithm gets bored, demands new forms of hyperbole in headlines.
webwielder2··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece (2023)
Why do people care about checking the weather in detail so much? Tomorrow it will probably be like today, unless it does/does not precipitate.
webwielder2··on Lost by Schoolgirls: A display of 17th century papercuts
What's normal to [them], amazes us! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McbdzzqVtDA
webwielder2··on Who Owns Your Wireless Service? Crooks Do. (2019)
I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that a comparison between the Trump and Biden administrations in efforts to police the telecom industry would show a marked difference in both effort and effectiveness.
webwielder2··on Redbox will shut down, corporate parent is being liquidated
It's funny that the one of the guys who turned MoviePass into a scam was also involved in Redbox.
webwielder2··on Large Horse
Eh, it's pretty big. I guess.
webwielder2··on The UK can go back to being the richest country in the world
Just as soon as “Step 2: ???” is worked out.
webwielder2··on The Origins of DS_store (2006)
> For Mac OS X we decided to rewrite the Finder from scratch.

I would think that the file manager for an entirely separate operating system being written from scratch would be a foregone conclusion.

webwielder2··on Japan wants to build a cargo conveyor belt because it’s running out of drivers
Or they could allow 25,000 immigrants in with generous incentives to be truck drivers.
webwielder2··on Trilobites killed by volcanic ash
It’s just amazing that fossils even exist. Thanks, random natural events and processes for showing us what the freakin’ distant past looked like!
webwielder2··on The story, as best I can remember, of the origin of Mosaic and Netscape [video]
I recently read Michael Lewis's "The New New Thing," which posits that Netscape was a get-rich-quick scheme by Jim Clark to fund a computer-navigated sailboat. He knew that Microsoft would render the company obsolete in six months, and bet that investors wouldn't glom on to that fact quickly enough. And boy was he right!
webwielder2··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
Does Uber regret shutting down its autonomous efforts? The problem has emerged as a tractable one. Or were they just too far behind and the capital expenditures too high to even remotely consider continuing? Does Uber exist in ten years?
webwielder2··on The tiny chip that powers Montreal subway tickets
So how much more powerful is this chip than the ones NASA used in the the Apollo program?
webwielder2··on Tsutomu Yamaguchi – A man who survived both atomic bombings (2023)
Is it a testament to the Japanese rail system that he was able to get to work in Nagasaki the next day after Hiroshima was f*cking nuked?
webwielder2··on Waymo issues software and mapping recall after robotaxi crashes into a pole
"Recall" really needs to be retired as a term.
webwielder2··on Show HN: Shortbread App – AI-powered, romantic comics for women
Is there a standard, user-friendly way of generating consistent AI images yet? Or is it just starting to emerge in patches like the tool here? Because DALL-E for example is a complete crapshoot; it has no ability for fine-tuning or persistence across images/iterations.
webwielder2··on The Scully Effect
No one ever remembers/points out that in the show, Scully was ALWAYS WRONG. Like, every single time. It was aliens or a monster that did it, guaranteed.
