watty··on The Paradise Papers: How Ridiculously Easy It Is for the Rich to Avoid Taxes
I disagree. Some of those are related to technology or are an interesting new phenomenon but in this case it doesn't fit.

The guidelines specifically state that this would be an "off-topic" submission. If these types of topics are wanted then the guidelines should be modified or a separate section should be created.

watty··on The Paradise Papers: How Ridiculously Easy It Is for the Rich to Avoid Taxes
Guidelines for submission:

"Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon..."

Since the rich avoiding taxes isn't some new phenomenon, this is off-topic.

watty··on Schneier: It's Time to Regulate IoT to Improve Cyber-Security
That's ridiculous, why? I'd understand some sort of certification process and requiring certified products to have ample warnings but why should it be illegal?

If I want to buy cheap hardware or software that isn't certified I should be able to.

watty··on Tech Industry: “We desperately need more developers”
It's not abnormal for a company to have senior-level openings and no junior openings.

My company for example is also "desperately" in need of a senior developer / architect to fill in a role.

watty··on How we do Vue at GitLab: one year later
There's vuex-saga as well. Something built in would have been nice because even though sagas are cool, the learning curve is steep enough for me to avoid it in projects.
watty··on How we do Vue at GitLab: one year later
It looks like VueX supports async out of the box. That's a huge win IMO.
watty··on Airline revenue from extra fees increases
Travelers do for a variety of reasons.
watty··on Billionaire Insys founder charged in U.S. opioid bribe case
Let's keep comments relative please. Systemic racism is a problem but has nothing to do with Insys.
watty··on Becoming Foolish
I thought it was a good read and gave me a little motivation to learn Haskell. I upvoted... is that a problem?
watty··on Show HN: Mockoon – mock REST APIs in seconds
I disagree. Only after I clicked on your link did it occur to me what you were trying to say.

I think it's a stretch. If the word is that taboo to you then what do you call those striped tail critters who get in the garbage? Rac--n?

watty··on The Fraternity Paradox: Lower GPA, Higher Incomes
Were you in a fraternity? I'm not saying you're wrong but I can't think of a single fraternity member who has their job due to some other fraternity member.

Maybe we were a weak fraternity but my opinion is that the higher earnings is due mainly to being above average socially.

watty··on U.S. To Collect Social Media Data on All Immigrants Entering Country
Ah, yes - wouldn't want the American government to look at your public profile information which you voluntarily posted online.
watty··on U.S. To Collect Social Media Data on All Immigrants Entering Country
Maybe I'm being contrarian but how is this a big deal? I'd expect the government to be collecting all public information for its citizens and those visiting the country - why not? This isn't private info, it's publicly posted social media information, which is VERY easy to set to private if you wish.

If they were collecting private info or browsing data, sure.

watty··on Magit Kickstarter fully funded
It could be that I would only need 10% of this knowledge, I get it. I really wasn't intending to "punish" it, simply stating that over 100 pages of detailed docs for a Git UI can be intimidating.
watty··on Magit Kickstarter fully funded
I came to the same conclusion but I admit I didn't spend too much time looking at it.

I first visited their docs: https://magit.vc/manual/magit.html#Introduction

And saw that it's over 100 pages (printed).

watty··on Aaron Hernandez Found to Have Severe C.T.E
It has nothing to do with murder and everything to do with suicide. The family is arguing that CTE caused or contributed to his suicide.
watty··on Facebook is 'silencing' Rohingya Muslim reports of 'ethnic cleansing'
I think it's safe to assume that they mean free "legal" speech.
watty··on The New Preschool Is Crushing Kids (2016)
This has got to be regional as my kids are in preschool and I've never heard anything remotely close.
watty··on Top medical experts say we should decriminalize all drugs (2016)
That's great but the original comment implied that all of the above would stop. My comment refuted it, your comment is agreeing - in that it wouldn't stop it but may reduce it.
watty··on GraphQL Patent Infringement Issues
It's a real threat, just blown way out of proportion. The second Facebook leverages this patent clause on ANY company, React is dead and everyone will migrate to Preact / VueJS, etc.

This means that the React patent card is a one-time play with HUGE repercussions. Facebook isn't going to target your little company or startup and worrying about it IMO is foolish.

watty··on Top medical experts say we should decriminalize all drugs (2016)
I don't understand - why would cheap/free drugs prevent gun battles, car break ins or OD'ing?

As far as I'm aware, junkies still need money to eat/sleep/drink and very few have a reliable source of income. All gun battles aren't over drugs, and would still occur. And not all overdoses are caused by tainted drugs.

watty··on Nano ID: A tiny, secure URL-friendly unique string ID generator for JavaScript
Good points but this comment reeks of arrogance. It absolutely does occur in other languages, why would you assume it doesn't?
watty··on Harvard and the Making of the Unabomber (2000)
When someone goes crazy they don't lose the ability to use sophisticated language. I feel like people are reading the words and respecting the sophistication yet ignoring the meaning. What is he actually saying? Nothing that makes sense, hence the crazy part.
watty··on A CEO Who Pays Employees to De-Locate from the Bay
This seems pretty genius. There is a surplus of highly skilled engineers in the Bay Area who are getting mediocre pay (when cost of living is taken into consideration). This allows Zapier to attract more of these highly skilled workers and not pay a premium to those in the bay area.
watty··on Google's stance on neo-Nazis 'dangerous', says EFF
It's the opposite - they believe that banning them will get them GOOD publicity, and it has. Look at how many people are talking about OkCupid today for banning that Nazi in the Vice video.
watty··on Google's stance on neo-Nazis 'dangerous', says EFF
So true. I had to create a separate Reddit account to have these discussions about internet freedom and refusing service because people assume I'm a white supremacist / Nazi.

I'm not, I just think it opens up some interesting discussion as to what we can or can't discriminate against.

watty··on Airport lounges will let anyone in, provided you can fake a QR code (2016)
Apparently it's ok to create fake barcodes.
watty··on Vermont Medical School Says Goodbye to Lectures
Sounds interesting, source?
watty··on Arrest of WannaCry researcher sends chill through security community
>> The fact that he was arrested with little to no evidence...

Do you really think they are loosely tying Marcus to Kronos with little to no evidence? Why go through all the trouble? Just because they haven't shared evidence in a sealed case doesn't mean they have no evidence. It's safe to assume there is evidence and it'll be interesting to see what it is.

watty··on Arrest of WannaCry researcher sends chill through security community
Firearms are legal. If you create an illegal firearm (banking trojan), and did the same, yes - you'd be partially liable.
