watmough··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
No phrase terrifies me so much as 'Entity Framework'.
watmough··on American Fast Food Took Over Kuwait and Made Its People Obese [video]
That's probably just portion size, which seems to be an American disease.

I'm from the U.K. originally and I regard US portions as typically about 3 or 4 meals.

Further, I've just managed to drop my weight from 188 to 168 lbs just by regarding this as a hard rule, and just generally eating a bit less than I need.

watmough··on 2018 MacBook Pro Review
Yes, on my Air now. It's like my old G4 12" AlBook, just a no-hassle, always there laptop.
watmough··on Apple staffers reportedly rebelling against open office plan at new HQ (2017)
Wow, new to me too. I had never thought of that.

Oh Christ, it could be awful. Luckily, and as an unremarkable looking male, I'm still clinging to a cube, and the noise there is bad enough.

watmough··on The Nixie Tube Story: The Neon Display Tech That Engineers Can’t Quit
Man, just another reason to be grateful to the Burroughs Corporation.

Here's one of the main ones:

watmough··on Forgotten Employee (2002)
Oh man, I so miss slow times at work.

  * Flight simulator (on a Pentium Pro)
  * Reading Red Dwarf scripts
  * Posting on Slashdot
Nowadays it's all I can do to keep up.
watmough··on How Peppa Pig became a video nightmare for children
Finally something that traumatizes me, as much as my children.

In all seriousness though, my daughters moved into the same room for about a month in response to the 'Killer Clown' (pennywise etc.) stories that were doing the rounds in their elementary school.

And just to emphasize how scary stories and TV can be, I'm only now getting over my deep unease whenever I think of the scarier parts of City of Death, and Sapphire and Steel.

watmough··on Back to the Future of Handwriting Recognition
I did something like this in Visual Basic and submitted it to PC PLUS in the UK, back in the early 90's.

It was (yay!) published as recognit.bas (VB) and I'd be really happy if someone still has a copy.

It recognized just numbers but the basis of operation was similar to the linked article.

watmough··on Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning (2010)
Yeah, my 7 y/o got a bit off her depth in a hotel pool once and was doing this. In fact she did it like 3 times, and I had to rescue her each time.

So it's really stuck with me that people drown 'very quietly', and to stay alert whenever my children are in water.

watmough··on Stopping the RSI pain that almost destroyed my programming career (2016)
My experience of eliminating RSI:

1) Consider getting a big trackball and learning to use it with your wrong hand,

2) Get a better keyboard,

3) Work slower,

4) Walk as much as you can,

5) Lose weight,

6) Manage stress.

In common with many others, I believe there's an emotional and/or stress context to pain, and you need to fight conditions such as RSI on multiple fronts.

watmough··on Inside the 76477 Space Invaders sound effect chip
Lol, I have a couple lying around I had earmarked for building a midi interface for. Maybe my 8-y/o daughter will 'grow into them' as she is the only person in the house with any ability to play keyboards.
watmough··on Why it’s so hard to fix banking: An interview with Simple’s exiting CEO
I had no idea this was the case. That's shocking.

If I need cash, I walk into a Chase branch [Not my bank, but conveniently near a Thai Restaurant I like to visit] and just ask for cash advance against my VISA card. Done by a teller, there's no ATM fees.

watmough··on Cannes Interview: Christopher Nolan on a new “unrestored” 70mm print of “2001”
Playing in LA.

Any way to know when it is coming to Houston?

watmough··on Bike Share Oversupply in China
I think that's actually literal fire-hose, rather than rope. It's pretty handy for delimiting R/C car tracks!
watmough··on Show HN: 8-bit Sounds – Studio2600 for the VCS (Atari 2600)
Wow, that's really neat.

I knew the sounds to be wrung from the VCS were quite varied, but they really did hit a pretty good set from pureish tones to heavy distorted noise.

watmough··on How long does it take to linear search 200MB in memory?
Hmmm, the Boyer-Moore indexing in Go takes 2 x as long as the naive linear search.

Now I feel bad for wasting an hour wrestling with Go weirdness to get my program to compile.

watmough··on Why are diapers so expensive?
It was a huge relief to get the children weaned, and off the giant vats of Similac ... I feel that was probably even more expensive than the diapers.
watmough··on MacOS finally gains external GPU support
Are you sure? I have a gtx 970 working on the maxwell drivers on el cap but no luck on pascal.
watmough··on Ask HN: How do I explain a resume gap after taking a sabbatical?
It's BS that this is a problem.

I have various breaks in my resume, including for layoffs, working on my own things etc.

Just have a reasonable narrative and you'll be fine.

watmough··on Lead is even deadlier than was feared
I believe that lead in petrol / gasoline still exists as there are not one but two effects from lead.

One is that lead helps promoting burning of the gasoline versus explosion or knocking.

Two is that lead is a great lubricant for the valve surfaces, preventing them eroding, leaking or sticking as they open / close. Eroding causes the engine to lose compression and efficiency, and sticking (as I have experienced first-hand) can cause a major engine failure by breaking the mechanism that opens/closes the valve.

watmough··on Norris Numbers – Walls you hit in program size (2014)
I hadn't come across this before, and sure enough, looking at the current personal project I'm working on, it's composed of 3 main files of C++, a Windows program, a parser [1] and a custom OpenGL control [2], each is 500 - 600 lines.

For me, I use Stepwise Refinement [3] to get to this point, but to get further, I have to start breaking out a more abstract approach. I found this definition of Structured Programming that puts it very nicely [4].

There's also a perhaps self-imposed wall, where you might trial a solution and implement a prototype, then use that to realize that it no point in pressing on without some serious redesign of a key component. For my example above, the rendering part is old-style OpenGL, which works pretty nicely at 60 fps, but I'm holding off doing more until I can slot in and benchmark a better approach using vertex buffers and shaders, with the goals of enabling me to shape and scale the renderings in an abstracted coordinate system, and scale to rendering hundreds of files instead of just one.

watmough··on Inspector – A drop-anywhere C++ REPL
Hopefully this is relevant, but you can certainly kick off nvcc -ptx in a shell to generate ptx files, then just load those in through driver calls.

I'm totally planning to do something like this for some bulk data processing I have in mind.

watmough··on What people actually do at WeWork
Yeah, that stood out as some serious asymmetry.
watmough··on MS to Give Windows 10 a ‘Modern’ Overhaul with Light Weight Polaris Windows Core
Yes, look at the bits used by Microsoft Office ... Win32.

I could believe the flashing (when running over RDP), glitchy, sluggish Outlook 2016 is using some of the new stuff. It's not a success in my view.

watmough··on Linus Torvalds: “Somebody is pushing complete garbage for unclear reasons.”
A masterpiece of writing! A tour-de-force!
watmough··on British 15-year-old gained access to intelligence, pretending to be head of CIA
> He used similar methods to access Mr Brennan’s AOL account and eventually Gamble was able to access his emails, contacts, his iCloud storage account and his wife’s iPad remotely.

Too crazy.

watmough··on Does Anyone Find Joy in Programming
Yes, but I've been super skeptical of the latest fad for most of my career.

Nowadays, I'm working on improving areas that I have neglected, and following my instincts of trying to program with as little 'baggage' as possible.

My project of the last week or so has been a program to generate colorbars according to the cubehelix technique, and I'm using this as a UI testbed for doing all the latest hi-dpi hi-jinks to support nice screens in Windows 10.

I'm also programming in the Petzold-98 style, with nothing much more than the Windows headers, using VS Code with MSYS2, g++, gdb and the stl.

It is certainly refreshing, and relatively joyful to be free of the various layers of crap that are usually pasted into your programming life, obscuring the relatively simple Windows API.

The Advent of Code also has been a total high spot of the year. I completed it, and whilst not getting any actually leaderboard point, I did write code for all the challenges, and managed to develop as programmer whilst doing it.
