want2know··on The Lithium Mine Buildup Is Outpacing the Electric-Car Boom
Well maybe this is different in the US but in Europe electric cars are easily 20% heavier than similar models.

The traction idea is not absurd. Tesla owners claim the tires last around 25000 kilometers instead of 60000 when the drive 'insane' all the time.

Takeshi Uchiyamanda was always talking about the environment when he talked about hydrogen. And even now he sees that battey cars are taking off he still stand by his point.

But that is all marketing talk?

want2know··on The Lithium Mine Buildup Is Outpacing the Electric-Car Boom
There are other problems arising for electric cars: road tax.

Electric cars are way havier than most cars and have so much traction that road maintenance will be much more expensive when everybody has an electric car.

This is why countries like Norway and the Netherlands are thinking about raising the road tax for electric vehicles.

I also think this is why brands like Toyota are still thinking about hydrogen cars. They still don't believe 100% in electric battery cars.

want2know··on The human body is already close to thermal limits in many regions
Your comment is absolutely unhelpful.

What is your point? Should we kill everybody over 70 years old?

Because: there is no overpopulation, and if there was it is not caused by too many babies but by people living longer.

When it comes to CO2 by agriculture: we are eating way too much (meat).

want2know··on The Problem of Mindfulness
I guess I will be downvoted for this but it always amazed me that so many people in HN are religious when it comes to mindfulness, Buddhism and meditation.

There is no scientific proof that there is any difference between relaxing in an chair and meditating following a strict form. The core is: it is very good to give the brain a brake in our busy times.

But it is also proven that it can be dangerous to give the brain a break when you have a troubles mind. Things can emerge from the depths which you should find help for.

A nice writeup about this is an article from 2016: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mindfulness-wellbein...

But there is also more recent recearch that backs this up.

So: meditation/relaxing can be very good to reduce stress and to think more clearly. But take care: "Meditation is not a therapy"

want2know··on A Pixel Is Not A Little Square (1995) [pdf]
The same is true for digital audio.

We are so used to see the visual presentation of samples that look like a bar diagram, that a lot of people think analog sounds better because the curves are smoother.

Chris Montgomery has a great talk about this.

want2know··on What Stress Does to the Brain
I have a comment in this thread about stress that might help you.

About anxiety: talk to a psychologist and keep doing things you like.

want2know··on What Stress Does to the Brain
Your stress is the result of responsibilities or the feeling of responsibilities you can't control.

First step is to figure pout what you feel you are responsible for but are not. You can quit that part immediately because that responsibility only exists in your head.

Then there are responsibilities you have, but can't control.

Then there are multiple options. For example:

Stop having that responsibility. For example tell that you can't take it anymore (not always possible).

Ask for help so you can fullfil the responsibility with someone (not always possible).

Take responsibility. Change your life if your way of living is holding you back from taking responsibility (not always possible).

It helped me a lot to think about it because there are a lot of responsibilities in your head that don't exist. A demanding company with an unrealistic and unreasonable planning is not your responsibility. Your well being is.

want2know··on What Stress Does to the Brain
Some time ago I had a long period of intense stress. It is amazing how much it changes your mind and body.

Muscles contract causing all kinds of insuline problems, your hormones become a mess, and all this is raising stress levels more because you don't know what is going on in your body.

And then an anxiety disorder is right around the corner.

And when everything is ok again your brain produces stress hormones when you hear a sound that would trigger you earlier or just a smell or a color.

I think this is the most difficult part to get back to normal:

The brain brings you in stress mode for no obvious reason. Then you have to reason about it so the stress goes away and you will slowly reset your brain.

But I doubt the paths in the brain will ever go away. It will be like a overgrown path in the end but it is still there.

want2know··on How Much Water Do You Need to Drink?
What is now also known, and not very clear from the article, is that sipping water throughout the day is not very good.

As the article is pointing out, a lot is happening when you drink water. And sipping all day means the body never gets rest from the 'water intake mode'.

So it is best to drink water until you have enough when you feel thirsty.

Edit: this was studied by Thomas D'havé, Leo Pruimboom, Tim Noakes, and others

want2know··on Teenager can walk again thanks to Dutch 3D printed spinal implant
It is most likely made of welded titanium particles as others point out.

Imagine a thin layer of titanium dust. Then shine a laser on the points where you want to weld. When done, add another layer over it and repeat.

Or imagine a nozzle which sprays titanium dust. Directly after the nozzle there is a focused laser point. When the dust goes through the laser it welds together. So when you do this close to a titanium surface you can add more titanium to it.

And there are other methods for 3D printing metal. But most of them are just advanced welding techniques.

Dell computers are very easy to open. Desktops even don't need screws. Laptops might have some screws but that's about it.

That is also how they keep repair costs low.

I always think they are better designed than Apple computers and today they even look nice.

want2know··on I Took Apple To Court And Won, Twice
With Dell I got the same experience. My power supply stopped working. Next day they came to my office and replaced the power supply and main board as well, just to be in case.
want2know··on How to solve a maze using shaders (2017) [video]
The first comment is about the constant Tau.

I never heard of Tau so I had to look it up and came across this: "pi is a confusing and unnatural choice for the circle constant."

So now I am confused.

If a cicle has a diameter of 1 the circumference is pi.

Can someone explain in what context pi might be confusing?

Because the sinus/radians always relates to the radius instead of the diameter?

want2know··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
Yes but it has more costs involved than just this.

For example the statistics of the brands Sony and Canon are now wrong and the budget of advertising is still as it was yesterday. So the bookkeepers have a lot of exta work to get this straight.

want2know··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
Yes. It is a little more complicated than I posted earlier, but the point is that not all parties agreed on the arrangement so there was no arrangement.

In the Netherlands this also happened some times on webshops.

And everytime a judge ruled people had to bring the goods back or should pay the full amount.

The reason is that it is very clear for the buyer it is a mistake. And almost all webshops have a legal notice about wrong or false prices.

want2know··on Ask HN: How to deal with constantly getting cut off in work discussions?
What works but can be hard to do is to direct you to the person who was interrupting you, look them in the eye and say something like: sorry I was talking and you interrupted me. And then continue where you left off.

This way you just name what they did without giving it too much weight or judgement.

want2know··on Russia’s permafrost is melting and it could have a devastating global effect
I even believe in ten years the world will be completely different.

When a country like India lacks drinking water a huge mass of people will be on the move.

In Europe food production is in trouble. This will also cause a lot of trouble and people will start to move to better places.

Maybe we will survive but that's indeed different from 'we will be fine'.

want2know··on Cities: Skylines Is Turing Complete
The game is most about traffic management. This is not very surprising because the company behind it was focused on traffic games.

I like the game a lot. But to be fair: you must download a good traffic control mod to setup traffic lights and road settings to keep the traffic under control.

want2know··on Landfill is underrated and recycling overrated
There is a lot of talk about it and the conclusion is that there is no need to take action.

The estimated max is 11 billion because the birthrate is very low right now.

The 'problem' is that we live longer.

want2know··on AI made from a sheet of glass can recognise numbers just by looking
Well you can implement a solver in hardware as well which will be very fast.
want2know··on AI made from a sheet of glass can recognise numbers just by looking
This is why what we now call AI isn't AI.

We now have the computing power to use a huge training set to set the parameters of a function. But after that it is like this glass.

I really like this as example. It shows how a function reads numbers by visualising the trained function.

But companies (Darpa for example) are already making the next step to AI: creating a realtime feedback loop to update the trained function.

The outcome of that will be scary AI as far as I'm concerned.

want2know··on Sugary drinks and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort
Well I meant as bad as drinking too much water.

When your weight is 70kg you can safely consume 2800mg per day. And that's a lot!

want2know··on Sugary drinks and cancer risk: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort
Aspartame is bad for your in large quantities. The safe standard is 40mg/kg/day.

So my guess it is safer than sugar.

Claims that artificial sweetners are bad fall into the category of drinking litres of water in a short period of time.

want2know··on Preserving Laptop Stickers on MacBooks
There are only 7 colors at best: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. That's pretty much it.
want2know··on Preserving Laptop Stickers on MacBooks
It's sad to see that in this thread most people jump in conclusions because they only assume there is only one reason why people put stickers on laptops.

Without giving it much thought you place people in a 'category' that only exists in your mind.

There are a million reasons why people put stickers on laptops. And also a million why people don't.

I guess it's best to keep an open mind and don't think you know why people sticker.
