vulcan01··on More annoying macOS 15 Sequoia prompts: Bluetooth
Macs without input devices (Mac Mini/Studio, iMac) are stationary devices. The devices that primarily contribute to accurate Find My info must be portable, since fixed locations wouldn't help much.
vulcan01··on macOS Sequoia is available today
Bluetooth does work. See the hardware support matrix here: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/M1-Series-Feature-Su...
vulcan01··on Writing a C Compiler: Build a Real Programming Language from Scratch
Zig is moving away from LLVM (https://github.com/ziglang/zig/issues/16270) and Rust has added Cranelift as a debug backend (https://lwn.net/Articles/964735/).

Not sure about Jai.

vulcan01··on I Hope Rust Does Not Oxidize Everything
It can also compile to JavaScript (instead of the BEAM) so you can use the same language for backend and frontend work.
vulcan01··on Mastodon forms new U.S. non-profit
The post is pretty clear about why they're currently a for-profit - their non-profit status has been revoked by the German tax office for unclear reasons. It's better to give people the benefit of the doubt when they are open about what's happening.
vulcan01··on Apple/OpenELM: Efficient Open-Source Family Language Models
Yep, AML is basically MIT + some stuff about patents. One wonders why they do not use the Apache license instead.
vulcan01··on An electric new era for Atlas
I believe the pledge is "don't give weapons to / install weapons on robots." Boston Dynamics do sell to various police departments and armed forces, but don't have weapons.
vulcan01··on Mornington Crescent
There is an esoteric programming language inspired by this: https://esolangs.org/wiki/Mornington_Crescent

(It can sometimes be seen at codegolf.stackexchange.com)

vulcan01··on “Wherever you get your podcasts” is a radical statement
My understanding (and I might be wrong here) is that the BBC not-podcasts are for folks within the UK, since the globally available ones have ads, right? I'm not in the UK, and am subscribed to several BBC podcasts, none of which have been not-podcasts.
vulcan01··on jj init – getting serious about replacing Git with Jujutsu
A shell alias can fix this.
vulcan01··on Mistral CEO confirms 'leak' of new open source AI model nearing GPT4 performance
According to the article, it will be open source, but it's not open source now.
vulcan01··on I just wanted Emacs to look nice – Using 24-bit color in terminals
That is what kitty's "custom SSH wrapper" does, if I understand correctly. Each time you ssh into a server, it will copy kitty's terminfo file if it doesn't already exist.

I use the ssh kitten, it works fine.

vulcan01··on Jane Street's "Figgie" Card Game
Figgie was discussed very recently, which is probably why it didn't get any upvotes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38679078
vulcan01··on ML Engineering Online Book
It's used in most high-performance computing clusters (except for the folks that are still on Torque, I guess).
vulcan01··on The New York Times Launches a Strong Case Against Microsoft and OpenAI
> libel requires "actual malice" which means the libeler needs to know that their statements are false

Creators of LLMs (OpenAI in this case) should know that their LLMs regularly provide false statements.

vulcan01··on The curse of the goitre in Switzerland
Based on their third paragraph, I assume they mean that people are not eating enough iodine.
vulcan01··on Unbricking my MacBook took an email to Tim Cook
How would they know it was a different person? Part of the point of enrolling your device in Find My is preventing others from doing so.
vulcan01··on Discord is down
Oh, I see. I don't think that's possible, though I'm sure there's a mod for it if you're willing to use a modded client (and break the TOS).

What you can do is mute channel categories and then collapse them, which I do for some servers.

vulcan01··on Windows Protected Print Mode
My family has an HP printer. My father uses Windows, and has had to install an HP app to scan documents. My Mac, on the other hand, can connect, print, and through the built-in "Printers & Scanners" panel in System Settings, or through the Print Center app.

I think this is probably a solved problem. Windows would have to support whatever API Macs use.

vulcan01··on Discord is down
You can mute servers in Discord, at least for the past year or so.
vulcan01··on Firefox Keeps Getting Faster
Do you use an extension to manage your tabs? I haven't experienced this on stock Firefox, but a few years ago I had Tree Style Tab installed and it would occasionally do this.

(I now use Sidebery.)

vulcan01··on The Qatargate Files
GP was just pointing out your (repeated) spelling mistakes, I believe. Qatar, not Quatar.
vulcan01··on Governor of Amazonas wants to charge Amazon royalties for use of the brand
Slightly OT, but do you have Greek ancestry? It would be interesting if your last name was "Greek" in French because that was your family's distinguishing factor a long time ago.
vulcan01··on Show HN: Advent of Code CLI
This is probably for people who are trying to get on the leaderboard.
vulcan01··on AirJet makes a MacBook Air perform like a MacBook Pro
The Linus Tech Tips video says that it's a commercial product for use in factories where dust and other airborne material mean they can't use fans for cooling (apparently, similar previous products from this company used passive cooling).

However, the marketing images on the product page don't match with this; there's definitely a lot of images of use at home. I'm not sure whether it's a consumer product or not.

vulcan01··on Naev – open-source game about space exploration, trade and combat
However, if I remember correctly, stealth in particular is not really considered and is dismissed as impossible. Campbell does a good job of demonstrating tactics to hide ships, though.
vulcan01··on The world nearly adopted a calendar with 13 months of 28 days
Caesar changed it to start on January 1st because the Roman consuls took office then on that day.
vulcan01··on Show HN: Sshx, a web-based collaborative terminal
Or tmux. I guess neither are as intuitive as clickable buttons though.
vulcan01··on Oxide Hiring Process
> self select for people generally later in their career or with a much bigger safety net

They're still basically a startup / pre-stable revenue, and most folks at startups are not risk-averse. So I'm not sure this bias really affects them at this stage of the company; even if they didn't have this hiring policy the people who want to work at startups have the same characteristics.

vulcan01··on How many billions of transistors in an iPhone processor?
> there was a web-based game where you did exactly that

This is the one I played some time ago: https://nandgame.com/
