vr46··on My ranking of every Shakespeare play
Oh Lord, SRB in the Almeida’s Richard II was a chore, good at despair but the play was pared down and confusing instead of challenging.
vr46··on My ranking of every Shakespeare play
Hamlet has all the best lines, but by god do you have to slog through so much of the play to get to them, including Ophelia's endless wailing. I've seen it half-a-dozen times and it is never ever not a slog in some way, not with Andrew Scott, nor with Benedict Cumberbatch or Paapa Essiedu.

It's just a bloody long play, or feels like it, and I imagine in Shakespeare's day, audiences wandered in and out of the auditorium casually to stretch and top up on booze + vittles whereas now you're fused into the seat on arrival and too stiff to get out at the interval without a winch.

vr46··on The world’s most liveable cities in 2023
Not all people born in Europe are caucasian, you know!

And the OECD argues that major world cities often have more in common with each other than other cities and towns in their own countries, in both demographics and challenges, and I find Vienna to be less of a world city in the demographic respect.

vr46··on The world’s most liveable cities in 2023
An FB friend is forever blathering on about Vienna and while I think it’s a nice city, her photos and my own limited experience suggest that it’s a great city to live in if you’re Caucasian - how diverse is the place really?
vr46··on Show HN: Software Developer salaries in Germany by technology and city
Hamburg recently, I was offered 2K less than the polite minimum in the range I had to suggest (the company never suggested any range to begin with, should have been a warning). Offer was 75K, I was very unimpressed, TBH. Huge company.

vr46··on Ask HN: How to live a alcohol/drug free lifestyle?
Alcohol is an acquired taste, and so are low/zero-alcohol beers - if you can slowly get used to the better wheat beers you give yourself a ton of headroom in pubs. I quit the booze with the drinkless technique in which you measure your booze consumption over a period and then set yourself targets. I still love pubs, however, but manage to not drink now.

I kept meeting high performance people who didn't drink - like, all the people I met in a three-month period - and that helped. In the UK, people get a bit angry when you tell them you've quit the booze, which is quite funny, but they'll get over it.

Not sure what mocktails you're drinking, but a virgin bloody mary or pina colada seems fairly innocuous?

vr46··on BBEdit: Where Respect Is Due
I have fond memories of writing HTML with it, and various other things, but I almost never use it anymore. The regex playground is awesome but I never think to use it, even though I still keep a licensed copy around.

I use Neovim a lot more and then perhaps VSCode, as I live in a world with a lot more going on and a lot more integration with other tools, a very different world to that which makes BBEdit a go-to app. Also, I don’t think it’s that impressive with large files. Still, gotta respect a hit.

Power to Rich Siegel.

vr46··on M2 Ultra Chip Benchmark Results Reveal Impressive Performance Gains
Agreed - I picked up an MBA as a second device for a job and then switched my main laptop to an M1 Max for development, photography, music and usually all running at the same time (IntelliJ, Photo Mechanic/Capture One, Logic Pro) and the performance just isn't an issue, in fact, there are NO hardware issues at all, except maybe I could do with even more disk space.

I once inhabited a performance-driven sphere, but it turned out that there was a ceiling on what I needed. Absolutely no doubt that many people who run different workloads will still be delighted with more performance, but for many of us, Apple are looking at a massive drop in upgrade sales soon...

vr46··on Gen Z is drinking less at concerts
True, yet the data shows they're not drinking as much outside pubs or venues either. The price rises have been here for decades, my old local landlord pointed at the Stella tap and said, "you can't be premium in pubs and cheap in supermarkets" to underline the price/value issue that you pointed out, and breweries have been squeezing venues for YEARS, forgetting staffing costs, etc.

I quit the booze years ago and it turns out that I/we overestimate hugely how much other people drink. Right now, Gen X and Baby Boomers are keeping the drinks industry alive, I think :D

vr46··on Gen Z is drinking less at concerts
My mate - for some unknown reason - bought a pub and lamented that "the kids aren't drinking anymore!" which anyone who goes to a lot of gigs could have easily observed. Booze is the worst, even though it can be awesome.

Personally, I think weed is horrible, and not just the smell. I once thought weed was as harmless as a banana, until I saw the state of my friends who've smoked a lot of weed for multiple decades, they're just lethargic and fugged-up, often distant, but who knows if it was the ultra-strong stuff - skunk? - that was all the rage.

A lot of other drugs have popped up in casual use, though. The stuff just gets delivered now, like a pizza.

vr46··on Classic components could be replaced by rubber in next-gen loudspeakers
I was wondering much the same, except I note that my pal’s massive Quads and the older radiator-like versions at uni were still crazy heavy due to the power supply (I assume) and they were a bit short on warm bass, perhaps these “new” speakers run on a trickle of power and produce bass like a Cerwin-Vega for all I know?
vr46··on Effect of repeated low-level red light on myopia prevention
Miyosmart lenses for kids have proven to be excellent so far, but I have become happy with my myopic superpower of magnification. Just hope my eyes don’t fall apart internally as I get old.
vr46··on Effect of repeated low-level red light on myopia prevention
Heh, once again, my old optician John Rose in London is some years ahead of the curve, I’ll be darned. He’s had this red light therapy bed installed at his practice for a few years now.

vr46··on Show HN: I created a game to memorize the fretboard
It started working! No idea, I’m going to try and fiddle with the browser and try to break it again. I did see a few JavaScript errors in the console but not sure if they were caused by: a) my blacklisting at DNS level b) my browser plugins c) other security setup locally

But I will let you know. Good job btw!

vr46··on Show HN: I created a game to memorize the fretboard
Signed up for mailing list but app is completely broken for me on Firefox, won't start at all, couple of errors in console, but nothing in Privacy badger or Ublock.
vr46··on Living sound forever: The genius of Wendy Carlos
Sadly, I fear Wendy has already vanished from current culture as I cannot access her work, only reams of writing on her. I have the Clockwork Orange LP that I bought in Canada for $5 back in 1998 but attempts to get much else have failed. It’s just too expensive, and while I can be a fan of the artist, I would like to be a fan of the art.

Maybe whoever inherits her works will make it available for a new generation to discover, and hopefully there’s enough writing and analysis that contextualizes her achievements.

vr46··on Planned obsolescence: Apple attacked for the “serialization” of its spare parts
I don't think this is quite that simple, because one user's authority could potential trump everyone else's in a company or group, once a vulnerable device infiltrates the system. Having trusted authorities works well when everyone has to rely on the security of the device. Once you can bypass that authority you effectively have a cheap MITM attack.
vr46··on Show HN: The Leica MPi: A Leica M2 with a Raspberry Pi-Powered Digital Sensor
I had an F2AS for many years, excellent viewfinder indeed, 0.8x, the same as non-HP F3, but quite a beast to carry around. The ME Super had even bigger magnification but probably not a 100% coverage screen.

I only sold the F2 motor drive last year, and that was ridiculous too, ten AA batteries for the MB1 battery pack. Cannot believe I used to take that thing to parties for kicks 20-30 years ago.

The UK drivers licence expires at the age of 70, and henceforth must be renewed every three years after that point.
vr46··on Repelled by high car prices, Americans are holding on to their vehicles longer
Funnily enough, just today I’ve decided, or submitted to, running my current non-EV car until the death (it‘s, or mine).

I’ve only got 20 years left on my driving licence and I can’t imagine affording a comparable EV (I drive a 2013 Audi 3.0 Biturbo A6 with ALL the trimmings) and then having to modify the house to get a place to park and charge - just for a car.

vr46··on Show HN: The Leica MPi: A Leica M2 with a Raspberry Pi-Powered Digital Sensor
Indeed - that made me laugh. I've a single ZM lens left over after I sold my M9 and I'd really like to get it back to active duty. The price of ANY M-mount camer body is excruciating.

I really liked the project info regarding shutter speeds etc, and I'm considering trying this out with a Nikon FE2 I don't really like and picked up for £100 some years ago, but I suspect even these cameras have gone up in price. I might make another pinhole camera for the RPI sensor, that can be done with an old body cap and any camera-like box.

vr46··on Pigz: Parallel gzip for modern multi-processor, multi-core machines

  }
vr46··on BBEdit is 30 years old as a commercial product
I think it replaced BBEdit Lite IIRC?
vr46··on Why the Ferrari F355 sounds so good
I had an 800 and it was slow and heavy to my mind, was not devastated when it was stolen.

We didn’t see too many 400s in the UK, I think they were all unofficial imports but was a long time ago to remember.

Mate has a VTR1000 Firestorm if that’s what you meant? Outstanding bike, extremely hard to keep under 100mph, fuel tank was genuinely stupidly small. The SP1 and 2 were the superbikes IIRC and different beasts to the Firestorm, never had the pleasure of riding one of the superbikes. But yes, a Duke 998 over an SP1 I think.
