voodoomagicman··on Graphs that show America’s health-care prices are ludicrous
The problem isn't the insurance negotiating a discount - it is that if your insurance has agreed to pay 80% of the cost of your care, and then is able to negotiate a discount, you should pay 20% of the discounted price, not 20% of the pre discount price.
voodoomagicman··on Why I left Google (2012)
So he goes to microsoft?
voodoomagicman··on Show HN: Weekend project, Intro.js
Ahh, was looking for some new css property - it looks like it just sets position:relative on the content it wants to highlight, and then uses z-index.
voodoomagicman··on Show HN: Weekend project, Intro.js
How do you achieve the effect of the rounded corner box w/ box-shadow masking the overlay, but allowing content to show through?
voodoomagicman··on Free transportation for life
You are wrong about battery replacements - they are $8,000 to $12,000 dollars depending on capacity, and batteries are covered by an 8 year warranty.
voodoomagicman··on Are We Suffering From Mobile App Burnout?
The idea of theft of 'digital goods' is absurd.

Goods are defined as "commodities that are tangible, usually movable, and generally not consumed at the same time as they are produced".

Theft is defined as "the act of stealing; specifically : the felonious taking and removing of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it"

Access to New York Times articles is not a tangible commodity, and bypassing the paywall in no way deprives the New York Times company of access or of a unit of access to the article.

voodoomagicman··on As Surface Goes On Sale Today, Microsoft Seeks to Reinvent The Tablet
I don't think it is fair to say it undercuts the price - the cheapest surface matches the cheapest ipad 3 at ~$500, while apple still offers the ipad2 for $400.

The surface does offer more storage at the $500 level, but the ipad has a higher resolution screen.

voodoomagicman··on As Surface Goes On Sale Today, Microsoft Seeks to Reinvent The Tablet
I think that is much less likely now that microsoft has bought a stake in nook.

* Get it for the same price as an ipad with 3x the screen resolution
voodoomagicman··on Congressman warns FTC To Leave Google alone
The reason that google punishes paid links and link networks is that incoming links are a huge component of pagerank - if these weren't punished, it would lower the quality of their search results.
voodoomagicman··on Battle between generations due to baby boomer debt legacy
Some practical arguments against a sales tax: - It is a disincentive towards spending and would hurt the economy - It creates a black market, encouraging tax avoidance and organized crime - It incentives consumption abroad

And some in favor of progressive taxation: - Letting the lowest earners keep their money can be cheaper than taking it and then giving it back through inefficient social services - Tax cuts on low earners translate to increased spending better than tax cuts on high earners

Regarding fairness, how is it fair that one person is born to wealthy parents and inherits $5 million while another inherits nothing, but unfair to set tax rates based on income?

voodoomagicman··on The Measurement That Would Reveal The Universe As A Computer Simulation
Are you implying that concepts of people in your mind are themselves self aware?
voodoomagicman··on 3D printing: The PC all over again?
This printer uses photolithography vs FDM used by reprap and makerbot - it works by using a laser to solidify photopolymer. These printers are capable of very high resoltion, but the downside is that their substrate can cost hundreds of dollars / liter.
voodoomagicman··on Remove your alarm safety net and fix your sleep
I have always found getting out of bed early to an alarm painful, and would often snooze my alarm long enough to skip morning classes in college.

Now I work with no fixed schedule, and I don't set an alarm at all. I find that I naturally wake up early and feel well rested. My theory is that waking up for an alarm would often wake me up in the middle of a sleep cycle, whereas waking up naturally I get up after a cycle ends.

voodoomagicman··on Kickstarter is Not a Store
I think you have a good point, but wanted to point out that you already can restrict the number of rewards available when starting a project.
voodoomagicman··on Samsung Galaxy S4 due in February
It is interesting to see the different perspective on Apple/Samsung in the korean vs american press.
voodoomagicman··on Organic Food Isn't More Nutritious, but That Isn't the Point
It is extremely unlikely that GMO animal feeds have any measurable effect on the meat you end up eating.. i have no doubt that your diet is healthy, but it seems like you are irrationally excluding more sustainable foods in favor of less sustainable ones. Would you be willing to do a blind test on GMO fed vs non GMO beef?
voodoomagicman··on You'll never be Chinese
I found this article fascinating, and I would love to read your take on it.
voodoomagicman··on How low (power) can you go?
There is still a limit on lens size that is very hard to work around.. i think that by scanning, a camera like this could function as a pinhole lens, but the effective lens size would only be the size of the single pixel.
voodoomagicman··on The Oatmeal's lawyer responds to FunnyJunk
In addition to an apology, I think FunnyJunk could turn this pr loss into a win by: making some face saving joke about the bear love thing, matching donations to charity, and explaining why they think user generated content on the web is important and the responsibility to police it isn't theirs.
voodoomagicman··on Backbone.js views done right
I did read to the end. What you end up suggesting includes: - rendering the view's elements as html in the parent view - creating all of the views and binding callbacks for all of the views to 'render' on the parent view - triggering all of the callbacks to render the views - each of which pull their element from the first view using a jquery selector.

I guess the advantage is that re-rendering the parent will re-render the subviews instead of re-creating them? Unless you need that, it seems to me like this is a lot of mess compared to just adding @$el.attr 'id', "row_#{@model.id}" to the child view.

voodoomagicman··on Backbone.js views done right
Why not just append all of the views in TableView render, and then have TableRowView set its own ID in its initialize or render method?

I think that would be more concise and straightforward.

voodoomagicman··on FamilyLeaf's (YC W12) Y Combinator Application
I don't think drugs are incompatible with being a responsible and productive person either. I think that they are negatively correlated with being a responsible and productive person. I think a search will turn up a lot of evidence to support that.

Pot isn't the worst thing ever, but it isn't going to help you start a business or become a great programmer. While you are high, you will be worse at reasoning and your working memory won't be great. This makes it harder to write code. There is also a legal risk, justified or not.

Drugs are a frustrating topic to debate. On one side there is a huge amount of misinformation intended to scare people away from drug use. Then, in reaction to that and coming out of the cognitive dissonance of millions of people doing something that they know isn't good for them, there is a ton of 'pot is good for you because it comes from the earth' bs on the other side. I think people on the internet (and apparently on HN) tend to be in the latter group, and I feel like it is worth pointing out the downsides.

voodoomagicman··on FamilyLeaf's (YC W12) Y Combinator Application
I am not saying that there should be hard rules. Just that there is a stigma there, and that it is there for a reason. Would you invest in a company with technical founders who got high every day?
voodoomagicman··on FamilyLeaf's (YC W12) Y Combinator Application
Totally, and I am definitely addicted to caffeine. Luckily this only improves my work :)

The difference is that I think very few people would say "Let's remove the stigma from alchoholism."

voodoomagicman··on FamilyLeaf's (YC W12) Y Combinator Application
It IS addictive. It can't cause withdrawal symptoms, but absolutely is addictive, like gambling or sex or any other activity that triggers your reward system. I know I felt addicted to pot, failed to quit smoking many times after making the decision to, and kept smoking daily for a year after I had stopped enjoying it. If not addiction, what would you call that?

If you can be sure that someone is reliable, then you are right, there is no reason to have a problem with their drug use. When you are hiring someone or making the decision to invest money with them, you rarely know enough to be sure. Using drugs is a HUGE red flag there, and should say think twice before hiring this person / giving them money.

voodoomagicman··on FamilyLeaf's (YC W12) Y Combinator Application
As someone w/ drug use in my past, I believe very strongly that the stigma around it is deserved.

I would think very hard about hiring or investing in someone who used marijuana, or who decided to sell marijuana (a bet with a big risk for very little reward), or who thought that using drugs was cool enough to include it on an application. Speaking from experience, marijuana is addictive, saps ambition, and makes it difficult to think hard and think logically. Anyone who has tried to code or do math while high knows exactly what I am talking about.

Wesley, obviously you have grown and been very successful since. I wish you only more success, and you are already far ahead of where I was at 19 (still smoking too much pot).

Your service looks very cool, but your logo is fantastic! Did you guys design it yourselves, or did you hire someone?
voodoomagicman··on Tevatron confirms a 115-135 GeV Higgs
Does anyone here have a good understanding of what the higgs boson is supposed to be?

If I understand correctly it is supposed to be the carrier of masss. At the same time its proposed mass is larger then the mass of a proton or electron. How can mass not be quantized to multiples of the value of a single higgs boson?

voodoomagicman··on How to build fast HTML5 mobile apps using backbone.js, zepto.js and trigger.io
So how does the monthly payment work? Is it just to use the packaging tools, or will your apps already in the stores break if you stop your subscription?

I am a javascript developer, Trigger.io seems cool, and I wouldn't mind paying to make it easy to write in coffee instead of java and objective c, but I wouldn't want a splash screen and wouldn't want to be locked into a subscription.
