voodoomagicman··on EPA bans asbestos, a deadly carcinogen still in use decades after partial ban
PFAS are different from soap in that your body can't break them down or excrete them well, so they bioaccumulate. Eating soap is absolutely not good for you, and if it also built up in your body people would be really worried about small exposures to it.
voodoomagicman··on Ask HN: What is the easiest way to get a PhD?
This is sort of begging the question why? There must be an interesting story behind the need.
voodoomagicman··on Lisa Su saved AMD – Now she wants Nvidia's AI crown
and Trader Joes / Aldi
voodoomagicman··on Fake account and $8 blue checkmark wipe $20B off Eli Lilly's market cap
It's not correct to say 'inflation went up'. While inflation was not 0 and prices went up, inflation went down.
voodoomagicman··on Sketch: Proud to Build a Truly Native Mac App
There is a really useful free tier - I think the paid tier mostly includes collaboration features.
voodoomagicman··on I Hope the Search for Extraterrestrial Life Finds Nothing (2008) [pdf]
This is newly interesting in light of the recent pentagon UFO revelations (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/23/us/politics/pentagon-ufo-...). While these have low credibility, and even if true are likely not extraterrestrial, finding life on mars would change this calculation.
voodoomagicman··on [dead]
What non consensus and correct views are you thinking of?
voodoomagicman··on Questioning the Lambda Architecture (2014)
I was curious too - "Paul Galvin wanted a brand name for Galvin Manufacturing Corporation's new car radio, and created the name “Motorola” by linking "motor" (for motorcar) with "ola" (from Victrola), which was also a popular ending for many companies at the time, e.g. Moviola, Crayola."
voodoomagicman··on Lidar Company Velodyne Debuts $100 Auto Safety Sensor
This is pedantic, but RADAR relies on photons as well - radio waves are just a different frequency of EM radiation vs visible light. A RADAR system emits photons that are reflected and hit a sensor like LIDAR does (or like a camera with a flash does). I think your point that having more diverse sensors is safer stands though.
voodoomagicman··on Facebook's underclass: staffers enjoy perks, contractors barely get by
I agree with the spirit of your comment, but FB certainly CAN pay 15% raises to their lowest paid employees - I imagine w/ very little impact to their bottom line.
voodoomagicman··on Consumer expenditure survey illustrating the income divide
This implies race by referencing stereotypes in a way that I find objectionable - noticed you getting downvotes and figured its worth giving some constructive feedback.

voodoomagicman··on Is Peter Thiel still a Y Combinator partner?
edited to correct spelling
voodoomagicman··on Peter Thiel will speak at GOP convention
Thiel is supporting Trump, but I don't think anyone is suggesting he would be vice president.
voodoomagicman··on The American Dream Is Alive in Finland
This is a good point, but I think individuals care a lot more about their percentile than you would expect - their benchmark for whether their income is 'a lot' or 'a little' is how much they see the people around them making.
voodoomagicman··on 23andMe Is Monetizing Your DNA the Way Facebook Monetizes 'Likes'
I'm a 23andme customer and the aggregate data being used like this is exactly what I expected and is a big part of the reason I signed up.

There is a lot I don't love about Pharma companies, but when they use this data to develop or better target drugs, they are advancing science.

voodoomagicman··on Bluetooth LED bulbs
It's my impression that the Chinese have more of a maker culture than almost anywhere else - it's a country full of people who grew up in villages and have now built factories and started companies that manufacture most of the world's stuff.
voodoomagicman··on Tesla's 'Autopilot' Will Make Mistakes. Humans Will Overreact
I don't know why you would confidently write 8 paragraphs on something you clearly don't know much about. Here are a few corrections:

- tesla does have hands on wheel sensors

- tesla does not use stereo cameras (autopilot uses a single forward facing camera combined with radar and sonar)

- the second crash 'from yesterday' you linked is from May

voodoomagicman··on Airbnb's impact on cities
Sharing has some different meanings:

- give a portion of (something) to another or others.

- use, occupy, or enjoy (something) jointly with another or others.

The first one has a lot of positive connotations, and 'sharing economy' startups are definitely taking advantage of that, but I think the second is a totally valid use of the word when talking about 'home sharing' or 'car sharing'. It's actually hard to think of a better term to describe those.

voodoomagicman··on Tony Blair: Brexit’s Stunning Coup
Well there is this (extreme poverty to fall below 10% of the world population for the first time): https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/oct/05/world-bank-e...

I think globalization played a big part.

voodoomagicman··on UK votes to leave EU
Not at all - I think that is human nature, and how we all behave. I just don't think its justified - if you asked most people to describe their moral frameworks, I don't think many would say 'the value of a human being is a function of their distance from me'.
voodoomagicman··on UK votes to leave EU
I would answer no to it - a blue collar worker from india absolutely deserves the same opportunity as a worker in Europe.

I agree, we are a long ways from the public accepting open borders. I just think its important to point out - as a society we have rejected racism, but we are blind to the fact that exclusionary nationalism is it's strict moral equivalent.

I would challenge anyone who disagrees to come up w/ an explanation why racism is immoral, that does not also apply to birthplace.

voodoomagicman··on UK votes to leave EU
Yes, I think that is bigoted.. Why does the blue collar worker from Eastern Europe deserve less opportunity than a blue collar worker from Sheffield? How is discriminating against some group of people based on what country they were born in morally different than discriminating based on race?
voodoomagicman··on Pull request acceptance of women versus men
> 6. Women have lower acceptance rates as outsiders when they are identifiable as women.

This is awful - I think it would be good to have some discussion around what we can do as a community to improve this?

voodoomagicman··on Tesla's Model X Was a Mistake
It doesn't seem like a myth at all - tesla could be the Apple in that its vertically integrated w/ a tightly controlled supply chain and an ecosystem producing lock-in (superchargers), capturing the high end of the market and most of the profit in the industry.

GM and BWM would be the android device manufacturers - assembling 3rd party components, poorly differentiated, initially not competitive on quality but eventually catching up, while competition w/ each other prevents any of them from achieving profits comparable to Tesla.

voodoomagicman··on AI is transforming Google search – the rest of the web is next
Yeah, but maybe that is all brains are too?
voodoomagicman··on Goldman Sachs May Be Forced to Fundamentally Question How Capitalism Is Working
Neither of these things seem 'sociopathic' or 'psychopathic' in any way - maybe 'ignorant' or 'misinformed'?
voodoomagicman··on Mixed reality outfit Magic Leap nets $793.5M
I think from the demos, it's pretty clear they won't be ale to 'draw black' - BUT - I think thats probably OK. Additive only AR could still be a really cool product, could still be widely adopted, be worth $5 billion, change the world, etc...
voodoomagicman··on Voxel Quest January 2016 Update
Want to register some support for what I see in the video - the banner looks cool, but I'm a lot more excited about the more detailed procedurally generated terrain in the video.
voodoomagicman··on Facebook Paying Employees to Move Closer to Work
And furthermore - if employees do buy up residential real estate, they now have an incentive against rezoning to allow higher density (and increasing supply -> potentially lowing the value of the very expensive assets they just purchased)
