voodoomagicman··on Tesla Energy
The battery costs $3000 - that is likely a cap on the cost of the work involved in producing it.
voodoomagicman··on Beijing to Shut All Major Coal Power Plants to Cut Pollution
Are you sure this is right? There must exist more than 25 coal plants in the world? Do we expect to hit this budget w/in a year? Is this coal plant much bigger than most others?
voodoomagicman··on Reasons not to use Facebook
I dislike Facebook because social networking is a natural monopoly and they have managed to grab ahold of it.. they have replaced some of the open and decentralized nature of the internet with the centralized and closed service they control. Competing with or replacing facebook will be very difficult because everyone's friends are already on facebook.

Wouldn't it be great if someone at harvard had come up with an open social networking protocol instead?

voodoomagicman··on Why are glasses so expensive? (2012)
check out zennioptical.com, you can find frames with lenses included for 10-30 dollars.
voodoomagicman··on The Miracle of Minneapolis
what neighborhood is that?
voodoomagicman··on Hi, It’s Google Corporate Development
I have tried this as well - it was definitely not as simple as taking the double integral.

In my experience moving and the stopping the phone would always end up with the two accelerations not exactly canceling out so that the calculated position would drift away from the true position at a constant rate.

Even applying a floor to velocity to eliminate the drift, the distances calculated for simple linear motions were consistently off by ~50% in either direction.

This was a few years ago so sensors may have improved - have you actually done this in practice and found it to work?

voodoomagicman··on Ask HN: What is the best JavaScript stack for a beginner to learn?
I agree - I definitely think its worth exploring a few. A good first framework to try is Backbone.. Backbone would not be my choice if I were starting a serious new project today, but because it is small, simple, and has very approachable and well annotated source code it is an easy framework to pick up and understand deeply. I would recommend reading through and then implementing a simple example like a to-do list, and then taking an hour to read through the annotated source.

After doing a small project with backbone, other frameworks like react + flux / angular or ember will be easier to pick up, and the tradeoffs they make will be easier to understand.

voodoomagicman··on Theater Chains Decline to Show Sony’s ‘The Interview,’ Citing Threats
Can anyone argue that it would not be a good thing if Kim Jong Un were assassinated? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisons_in_North_Korea
voodoomagicman··on Etsy acquires Grand St.
I had to look it up, but a B-Corp is a 'Benefit Corporation' - it voluntarily takes on a legal obligation to consider social good as well as profit in its decision making process.
voodoomagicman··on Lytro Announces New Light Field Camera
Another interesting application is as a display. A display w/ a lens array to pixel configuration matching the one of the sensor is able to re-create the light field for 3d viewing.
voodoomagicman··on Jony Ive shakes up Apple’s software design group
Imagine a pink phone w/ a flowery case and a software ui styled to look like starcraft controls.
voodoomagicman··on Google Now for Chrome
I had the same problem - I was able to fix it by going to about:flags and disabling 'enable experimental ui for notifications'. This prevents chrome from using the native osx notification center, and instead uses a bell icon in the menubar. It also fixed the weather notifications issue for me.
voodoomagicman··on In Some Ways, It's Looking Like 1999 in the Stock Market
The thing is there is not a clear way to have a market control the creation of new money - the choice is between central control of the money supply and a fixed money supply.
voodoomagicman··on Tesla Can Topple the Car-Dealer Monopoly
But how many people buy cars? Dealerships profits / car salesmen's wages come at the expense of car buyers as much as car manufacturers.
voodoomagicman··on Scientists Say Their Giant Laser Has Produced Nuclear Fusion
In this case it is clear he is talking about utilitarian expected value rather than personal expected value. He receives no personal benefit by uploading the paper, but reading it provides value to others at ~0 cost to anyone.
voodoomagicman··on The “middle class” myth: Here’s why wages are really so low today
The income range for the middle 3 quintiles is actually about $20k - $100k.

voodoomagicman··on Why I switched from Ruby to Go
does anyone know what the library he is using is in the example ruby code?
voodoomagicman··on SpaceX Grasshopper 744m test flight [video]
The idea is not to slowly fly to orbit and back - it is for the stages to fall to earth and then decelerate from terminal velocity to a gentle landing. The reason for these tests is to develop the technology required to do that.

According to Musk, fuel accounts for only 0.3% of the costs of a launch, so a re-usable rocket could achieve significant cost savings even though it would require more fuel.

voodoomagicman··on Twitter’s female “problem”
what have you ever done that is worthwhile?
voodoomagicman··on Families Hoard Cash 5 Years After Crisis
What you are missing is that my spending is your income, and your spending is mine. As a thought experiment, if everyone were to stop spending entirely and pay down debt at the same time, no one would have any income.

In a more realistic situation - when a big chunk of the GDP is used to pay down debt, the resulting decrease in spending causes the economy to run below capacity and unemployment to be high. This is why low interest or stimulus is helpful - it encourages the economy to produce at its full capacity even though spending by individuals is reduced. This is necessary UNTIL private debt has been payed down and the economy is able to run at full capacity on its own.

voodoomagicman··on The Kickstarter Culture Wars
I just deleted my Kickstarter account and let them know that I will not be backing projects unless they change this policy.

I urge others who care about science, the environment, and the human condition in general to do the same.

voodoomagicman··on A Year and a Half With a Nissan Leaf (Part 2): The Summer Drive
For lots of people, considering the cost over five years after gas savings and incentives, the leaf actually works out the be the cheapest car available.
voodoomagicman··on Carmack talks practical use of Haskell, Lisp in game prog at Quakecon keynote
I write ruby and javascript all day, and while I make plenty of errors, I find that they are rarely related to types. What are you working on where you regularly run into these? I hear this argument often enough that I assume there is something to it, but I struggle to understand it.
voodoomagicman··on Project Loon
Missiles that can are much more expensive than baloons
voodoomagicman··on Are coders worth it?
Do you realize there is actual back breaking work - and coding isn't it? And that making $100k after 5 years is still about twice the median income for a family, and goes a lot farther in places with a low cost of living than it does in New York or the bay area. And that if you want a higher paying job, it is on you to find it and get hired?
voodoomagicman··on 2013 Nissan Leaf Review
Wow, it is also wrong - the tesla does have many of those features.
voodoomagicman··on Tesla: a little bit Apple, a little bit Google, and about to be huge
I think you answer your own question here:

"Bottom line is what do I get by buying an Electric car exactly even assuming it is the same price as the gas vehicle? How important is the gas savings when you weigh that over the lack of utility in other areas?"

...

"People buy cars on emotion not rationality. It's the same reason someone wants 4 wheel drive even though they might only need it a few days per year."

voodoomagicman··on “The Tesla Model S is our top-scoring car”
The most similar BMW and Audi are the 7 series and A8, they are priced pretty comparably to the Tesla before any fuel savings.
voodoomagicman··on Take pride or fuck it
I think it is an analogy to brownian motion - the random movement of particles in a fluid.
voodoomagicman··on Graphs that show America’s health-care prices are ludicrous
As an international student, what would the consequences of just not paying that bill be?
