vonklaus··on Alphabet's Project Loon says it will run the program with fewer balloons
The kind that grants a monopoly to ISPs which allows Avg. Americans to have 1-2 choices for internet >10mbs. There was a 1 Trillion or greater global roll up in the last 2ish years.

I think that google was likely meeting friction somewhere in the process, prob everywhere. I am sure they also got pushback internally but I figure launching in major cities w/ 10-20 year better cable would be profitable. Especially since that industry is insanely profitable

vonklaus··on ICANN has taken my site hostage
That is a loaded question, but still the answer is "of course".

If ICANN can seize a domain for a clerical error, they can seize one for a crime. If measured by the American standard of innocence first, then a 3rd party would make & prove their claim and the 3rd party would have the domain seized or defend themselves.

Also, I could beat the current system with a gmail account and a vanilla visa gift card.

What about this loaded question, which is also as absurd:

Shouldn't piracy claims and "alleged" victims of revenge-porn post and a continually update their contact info publicly online. Should you be able to hide behind anonymity(1).

1. There is a difference between anonymity, and non-public.

vonklaus··on Alphabet's Project Loon says it will run the program with fewer balloons
I think that is political.
vonklaus··on CockroachDB beta-20161013
Hey man, didn't realize you left Stripe but did sort of notice Jepsen getting more serious. Jepsen has phenomenal reach:

Interesting and hilarious coverage of technical complexity which assumes just enough knowledge to engage a keen novice while seemingly engaging seasoned experts in the field.

Thanks for that. Your entertainment firm is a bit out if my wheelhouse, but it's such a crowded space and you end up getting really tied down. Maybe get acquihired for an Iditarod team, but I reckon this is more scaleable.

Posts are great. Tganks

vonklaus··on CockroachDB beta-20161013
Wow. Probably fundraising and getting out front of googles new consumer spanner service. I just started experimenting w/ cockroachdb and it sounds/seems great. They def are campaigning hard, landing a Jepsen test and a lot of posts/articles last couple.

I am pulling for them over G on principle. I infer they know people at Stripe where the Rethink team & Aphyr are so hopefully they can learn from them and build an awesome product. G has lost a lot of battles on UX, Docs, attitude and just general product. They have won a lot of battles on sheer size & resources. Be nice to have this stick around.

vonklaus··on Why Google’s Spanner Database Won’t Do as Well as Its Clone
Not even close to Google caliber engineer and I was also struck by that mis-characterization
vonklaus··on Nobody Knows What They're Doing (2013)
I agree with the premise but not the conclusion. Worked at/have seen a few start-ups close up; people don't know what they are doing-- I mean this in a "cliff jump build parachute" way not pejoratively.

With that in mind, you have a fragmented ecosystem and a lot to gain. I don't think people are organized or agreeable enough for an "illuminati"-esque conspiracy, but people and groups can scheme so well here w/ little oversite.

Article seemed to say that small specific task goals can get done but because some large groups can't execute a large scale goal there is no "scheming". I disagree.

vonklaus··on Craigslist Is Ugly, Janky, Old School, and Unbeatable
I am saying the profitabls challenger is just a server probably hosted nearly free on AWS or Azure through sponsorships. Being profitable is great and I applaud that, but my point is what is the magnitude of success? This likely is a lifestyle business and it is disingenuous to say it is a CL competitor.
vonklaus··on Craigslist Is Ugly, Janky, Old School, and Unbeatable
I almost always fight the SV meme that largely founders focus on throwaway trivial ideas. I just think this is so stupid. Craigslist is one of the few companies that isnt greedy, is community driven, and if there are examples using there outsize market to kill competitirs or act nefarious-- I havent heard them.

I did 3 craigslist deals in the past 2 days. Got coffee with a stranger at 2am who let me flash an os to a drive he sold me for cheap..at 2am.

Craigslist is the email of startups. It works well enough, its a cockroach, and other substitute & complimentary companies fill its gaps. Ebay, etsy, amazon, tradesy, ect.

This isnt even a problem. I have done hundreds of deals and havent had a bad experience. Have others; Absolutely. Do I think its common, not in my experience. I suspect the percentage is low, but I dont have data.

Craigslist is what ai would like to see other companies model after, simplicity, community and no greed.

I may be alone, but i find this absurd and destined to fail. Is it profitable? Probably, but show me that balance sheet. Probably founders not oaying themselves, a tiny server and an apartment. I dont want to belittle the founders, they must have had a terrible experience, but this doesnt seem like a profitable or good strategy at all

vonklaus··on Government accused of 'full-frontal attack' on whistleblowers
Not sure if hyperbole, or if you missed the U.S. election cycle. However, I assure you, many people can imagine most dysfunctional, deceitful, lunatic-filled version of politics and are in fact watching it unfold in front of them...
vonklaus··on Government accused of 'full-frontal attack' on whistleblowers
I just watched zero days, a great documentary about stuxnet. It is important to realize-- and this seems to be the films thesis, that secrecy is extremely damaging. It took 20-30 years for bioweapons, nuclear weapons, and chemical weapons treaties to be enacted and this process hasn't been started with cyber.

Attacking whistleblowers is damaging because it is postponing inevitable discussions that need to happen and interfering with discourse nations need to have within themselves and with other counter-parties.

vonklaus··on The Wall Street Journal to Close Google Loophole Entirely
it's unclear if you do not realize thousands of people make their living full-time as promoters on social media. They literally pay rent with money that was paid to them proportionate to their retweets. Or if this was hyperbole to underscore your disagreement with a freemium business model
vonklaus··on NSA contractor indicted over mammoth theft of classified data
Look, I am pro-snowden and I am very skeptical of the DNC hack being Russia. That said, the shadow brokers got the equation group tools from somewhere.

Do I think this is the "official story", No. Of course not. But in terms of actual national security threats; not just the ISIS/Russia/ect propaganda-- a contractor bringing home terabytes of data is worrying. This is actually a huge threat to NatSec. This isn't whistleblowing this isn't treason; it's incompetence. Whether this is where the shadowbrokers kit came from or this is a patsy, this is irresponsible.

The information this guy had is almost certainly leaked. Whether he had a "convenient" penchant for bringing his work home and became the fall guy, or whether his home was compromised, or whether he outright sold them, its obvious this was dumb.

I don't love the NSA/FBI ect. But they are gonna do what they do so they might as well do it securely.

This appears to work. The "settings" tab appears to say that safesearch is on but this overrides it. Not sure if for the session or just a oneoff but nice to know and gets the job done.

Going to check out some other "bangs" now im aware.

vonklaus··on NSA contractor indicted over mammoth theft of classified data
These are hardly comparable. Petraeus should likely have been punished more and clearly got special treatment, but if we are to believe the article this was certainly a security breakdown.

This seems to have spanned 2 decades and was a much larger trove of docs. Petraeus certainly avoided much more substantial punishment due to his position but that doesn't make this incident legit.

vonklaus··on IBM Bans Remote Work Company Wide – Move or Leave
Working in the office is something I have always wanted as a frequent remote employee. I think it is great for communication and for the culture.

This specifically is very heavy handed. IBM apparently had a culture that supports this, so it is probably more akin to a layoff than a policy change. It says 30 days to conform-- not nearly enough time to make such a decision nor have this properly aligned culturally.

This may be good for morale among those disallowed remote work, feeling the company now provides "fairness" across all departments. I still think this looks like a layoff/ageism as they are comitted to hiring 25k more employees and married folks with children likely to be less mobile.

I like on site teams. I think remote work has a place, especially for those who have absorbed a companies culture, but this doesnt seem like the way to do it.

vonklaus··on What Vizio was doing behind the TV screen
but then Vizio wouldn't make a profit. The FTC has to make sure these companies continue to be profitable while itself appears to be semi-competent. Similarly, Verizons supercookie "crackdown" was laughable. FTC stands for Fuck the Consumer because that is their primary objective.

edit: I phrased the above incorrectly. I meant to imply that the FTC is beholden to these companies and largely does their bidding. Except in narrow circumstances, the FTC really is a tool of the major corporations it is supposed to regulate.

Fuck the FTC.

I use ddg for search. I like it but it is a hassle to have to toggle safe mode every time. I wish they had a url/alternative to toggle this literally every browser load.
vonklaus··on Whonix – A desktop operating system designed for advanced security and privacy
Used parrotOS 2 years ago. I think it was newish then. Liked it a lot. Was fairly polished then. What do you use it for and what features do you like most?
vonklaus··on My Farewell to Twitter
Went into the article assuming it was another anti free speech whine piece. Was pleasantly surprised that it was more generally about social media, MH, and a dependency cycle.

This pervades social media culture and as is noted in the article-- a user knows it is taking a toll but the rush is a driving factor. It is like drug, or any addiction-- captivating and hard to break.

Decent article, nice change of pace from other articles recently.

vonklaus··on Snap commits $2B over 5 years for Google Cloud infrastructure
Counterpoint: Maybe the agreement is breakable or they know they can resell the resources. This metric could be a good way to trick "tech savvy" analysts who don't care about total users.

I assume spending this much would give them a below market discount and they could recoup some of their losses if nec.

All this assumes it is a positioning tactic w/ a hedge. Maybe, they will just build a developer ecosystem a don't want to bifurcate their engineering output. If twitter fails, it would validate this choice as they can pay a slight premium and if their metrics increase build infrastructure in 2.5 years w/ more info to spec it

vonklaus··on Facebook Has Been Intentionally Crashing Its Android App on Users (2016)
I made & deleted a profile on Facebook ysterday for branding a product. Yelp and google biz as well.

In my experience, it provides little value for startups except in narrow arenas (cause or nprofit/physical consumer product) and is a time sink.

It reminded me of what a pain it was and it was worth having an hour as a sunk cost. If you are raising, it provides a minimal amount of validation and credibility, but time is much better spent elsewhere

vonklaus··on GitLab.com melts down after wrong directory deleted, backups fail
I just really like gitlab. I am not personally affected by the outage, but as far as collosul fuckups go, I think they will do their level best to fix the issue, be transparent about it and do what they can to make it right.

We'll get a really good measure of the company by how this turns out.

vonklaus··on How Uber and Airbnb Won
Uber has a >2$B burn rate. I agree with you. I think GM can win if the execute the complex coordinatiom of Lyft, Cruise & Car Manufacturing but I don't see uber winning as anything but an acquisition
vonklaus··on Secret docs reveal: an FBI with vast hidden powers
Labels are the problem. Democrats and Republicans, liberals, conservatives ect is creating a false sense of choice.

The problem has a solution: states right. ~400 million people will never agree on a leader or have their beliefs encapsulated by 1 person/party.

More choice, more parties, more power distribution

vonklaus··on Secret docs reveal: an FBI with vast hidden powers
> make destruction of the system hard

One might argue it already is. Then you have a bad system with a lot of friction to change it.

vonklaus··on Dropbox Paper
After looking this over again, it kind of seems like a blogging platform. I'm going to DL it later, but looks like it could be a sneaky way for them to enter the content publishing space.
vonklaus··on Dropbox Paper
Finally, they released google docs. I jest, buy I am going to give them (Dropbox) another shot. Google docs is very frustrating. From dumping me into an unorganized pile of text w/o folders to just enough features to make it complicated to do basic stuff but bot enough to do advanced...or even normal stuff.

Dropbox has done some annoying stuff w/ their offerings, but i'm going to try paper out and if I don't get burned after a few months i'll upgrade to paid.

vonklaus··on Hollywood as We Know It Is Over
Hollywood isn't over. The "we" in the article title is hollywood, i.e how it understands itself. We as HN, and pretty much everyone else knew this in 2010.
vonklaus··on Parse is shutting down today
A key takeaway from this; and one of the main reasons parse failed-- don't name a company or service after an extremely generic programming term.

Parse failed for a lot of reasons but I hated it because the documentation was terrible at the beginning and used to get me stuck in a forever loop of links. So I searched for additonal info:

"Parse javascript"

"Parse website library"

"Parse programming"

Admittedly contrived examples. But the point i am making is pretty clear.
