volandovengo··on Many McGill Education Students Cannot Calculate an Average
Why is this #1 on the homepage?
volandovengo··on Google Inbox
I'd love to see the data behind why this justified a team of 100+ people making more than 100,000 per year to re-invent email.

Does the typical email user have an inbox which is half empty? Do users just read email that seems exciting? Do users want to just glance at their email periodically?

volandovengo··on Airbnb in the City – New York State Attorney General's Report [pdf]
AirBnB has added a crazy number of prompts letting you know that you are probably in violation in the law when you attempt to list a place in NYC.

Between income tax, hotel tax + the likelihood of the govt or management company coming after you, I think AirBnB is looking a little less enticing to regular people in NYC to rent their homes.

volandovengo··on WePay (YC S09) Launches WePay Clear, a Stripe Competitor with Fraud Protection
Thanks for the details.

When you offer this fraud guarantee for e-commerce sites, I'll be your first customer.

volandovengo··on WePay (YC S09) Launches WePay Clear, a Stripe Competitor with Fraud Protection
I find this hugely compelling. Fraud protection is a huge time sync for most e-commerce providers.

Bill - could you please explain some of the fine print? Are all chargebacks covered? Do you provide the ability to select which countries to accept payments from? Thanks so much!

volandovengo··on Apple is propping up a fundamentally broken payments industry
The credit card companies don't do fraud protection - they practically encourage it with how little of checks they provide.

When customers issue a chargeback, they almost always side with the customer, leaving with the merchant with very little recourse. As a merchant, you just lose the money.

volandovengo··on Apple is propping up a fundamentally broken payments industry
At some point the credit card industry is going to get disrupted. It's so broken + they take on so little risk that it's just a matter of time.

My belief is that bitcoin coupled with the right payment experience will disrupt the industry at some point. I would highly suggest reading Marc Andreessen view on the subject: http://blog.pmarca.com/2014/01/22/why-bitcoin-matters/

Regalii - New York - YC Summer 2013 - http://www.regalii.com

We're searching for a full stack ROR developer to join our small team backed by top investors. We're looking to pay market rates and share equity for the right person.

We're particularly looking for somebody who would get enthused by challenge of brining remittances into the 21st century. These days, 90% of international money transfers still involve somebody walking to a western union like institution and sending cash. We think this process can be way easier for both the sender and the receiver.

If this sounds intriguing, please watch our techcrunch disrupt video (http://techcrunch.com/video/startup-battlefield-sf-2013-fina...) and drop me a line to say hello (naysawn) - naysawn@regalii.com

volandovengo··on The 11% for IE11 challenge
Cool idea. Unfortunate that they limit things to the first 11 responses.
volandovengo··on Behind Microsoft Deal, the Specter of a Nokia Android Phone
i still don't complete understand why you can't just buy a phone nowadays and install either android or windows phone os on it.

shouldn't this be the strategy which microsoft pursues?

volandovengo··on How To Create A Productive Routine
Can anyone actually maintain all of these? They seem easy to write down but hard to actually maintain over the long term...

volandovengo··on Microsoft Research turns Kinect into sign language reader
It is a shame that things like this aren't made into shipping products.

Maybe at some point they will integrate research into the product groups so that we can still really cool (self driving car cool) projects coming out of Microsoft

volandovengo··on San Jose State suspends online courses
I recently interviewed many students who were taking online classes as opposed to in person classes.

I was surprised to learn that most chose to do them online so that they can cheat on the tests. Free from instructor supervision all tests were open book and thus were much easier than taking them in person.

While many of us have high ideals for online education, I've learned that the majority of students get a degree for the diploma first and the education second.

volandovengo··on The Rise and Fall of Couchsurfing
I've couchsurfed pretty extensively and I think it is hands down the best experience for travelling solo. It is one of the few sites online which I really think has tangibly improved people's lives.

Is there really another way to show up in a spot and instantly be plugged into a community who introduces you to their friends and wants to hang out with you?

volandovengo··on iOS 7
Totally. If they had announced a back button, I would have been ecstatic.
volandovengo··on iOS 7
Very unimpressed. They put lipstick on a pig. iOS was in need of a big update and this isn't it!
volandovengo··on US intelligence mining data from 9 US Internet companies in broad secret program
If you are interested in looking into this more, I highly recommend the documentary which is coming out called terms and conditions may apply. It explores how companies are giving this information to the govt willingly + it is stated in their terms and conditions.

This is the trailer: https://vimeo.com/57182041

ALM is that is where the money is. Higher-ups in orgs are much more willing to pay for oversight and management features than language features.

volandovengo··on New college grads: Don’t sell your time for a living
lol. well put.

i do think there is wisdom in joining a startup run by veterans out of college. at least then you get the experience in running a startup.

if you join a big company, you get educated in the skills needed to succeed at a big company, which unfortunately are very different to the skills needed to doing something on your own.

i do like his quote though that it will take about 10,000 hours to get good at anything...
