volandovengo··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
Isn't it amazing that Paul Graham hasn't updated his CSS in 20 years?

Paul - spend a few tokens to give me a text size I can read?

volandovengo··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
Thanks Eric - been a fan of your work for years! I remember Steve Blank bragging in his early courses that you evangelized his work to the masses. I applaud writing a book on the challenges of making a business that is net good for society. I've personally found that there are just so many forces pushing towards the status quo (make more $$), that it's really hard to create a company that prioritizes public good.

How much do you blame our values of our society for creating corrupt businesses? Are corrupt businesses just a mirror of our own values?

Thanks for the thorough analysis.

Wish articles like this were not written optimized for SEO. They’re much harder to read!

volandovengo··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece
Does anyone know why apple acquired them just to shut it down?

It doesn’t seem like the weather data was unique - what was unique was its user focussed design.

To acquire it just to shut it down would have only made sense to me had they actually folded the design of dark sky into their weather app and put their founders in charge of the app. Doesn’t seem like that happened

God bless the internet!
volandovengo··on “Privacy”.com–Yeah Right
Privacy.com is a great service. I use them all the time to generate 1 time use card numbers for sites & then cancel the card so they cannot mysteriously charge me. I've been with them for years & their CEO is a wonderful & smart person.

When you're allowing strangers to perform financial transactions - you're taking on risk that the money that is sent needs to actually be funded. They need to conform to KYC laws like all fintech providers - so yes, they will require knowing a little bit about you to operate in the United States like all financial institutions.

volandovengo··on Launch HN: BlackOakTV (YC S21) – Netflix for black people
There are a lot of efforts to increase diversity in media.

One effort that has been happening is providing incentives to have diverse top of the line staff on productions so that they share their stories and angle on things.

We at wrapbook (https://www.wrapbook.com) at making it easy for productions to measure their diverse staff so that we can incentivize diversity down the line.

volandovengo··on U.S. Labor Secretary throws support behind classifying gig workers as employees
I happen to have co-founded a company (Wrapbook) that makes it easy to work with gig-based workers as employees. The entertainment space long ago settled this fight and classifies everyone as employees, not as contractors, even when they work a single day.

This fight has nothing to do with independence and only has to do with employers trying to save some 15% of an employee's wage in taxes & keep themselves off the hook if people get injured on the job.

The savings are real - somebody making $1000 a day - classified as an employee, costs an additional estimated $150.

You can pay short term workers as employees pretty easily (we facilitate it).

volandovengo··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
I've unfortunately become a payroll tax-witholding specialist.

You're required to withold taxes in the state that work is performed. If you're working from home, that's your work location.

You should get refunded for your CA taxes at the end of the year if they are being withheld.

volandovengo··on The internet is an SEO landfill
Would suggest that SEO is just one of many tactics to acquire users. I bet that from this article - you'll get waaaay more customers for your early stage product than ranking on google would have gotten you at this early stage.

I used to be obsessed with SEO - now I realize that many companies, search just isn't the best way to acquire customers. I saw this - currently investing in SEO and moving up the rankings steadily because long term - it feels like a great source of brand awareness.

volandovengo··on Spotify to Apple: Time to Play Fair
For a long time I've been confused about the rules of monopolies. Microsoft got into a lot of trouble when they bundled IE into Windows so much so that the US threatened heavily to break up the company.

Fast forward a decade later and apple, google and amazon bundle a crazy amount of unrelated services into their platforms without the regulators raising an eyebrow...

volandovengo··on MailChimp deleted my account with no warning
MailChimp likes doing stuff like this.

When I once travelled to Ghana, I discovered that because I was in Ghana, they blocked my entire account without warning.

volandovengo··on Microsoft Edge and open source collaboration
This is HUGE!

Microsoft throwing away the IE engine in favor of one more or less standard rendering engine is a huge win for web developers everywhere!

It's also something that would have been unimaginable in the Steve Ballmer era.

Thank you!

volandovengo··on Ask HN: Is Google failing at UI/UX/design simplicity in its products?
Overall, Google at the very least has published their Material Design guidelines that are very good.

https://material.io/design/

That said, I'm annoyed that they are shutting down inbox. The UX of it was amazing.

volandovengo··on Ask HN: CSS for developers
Quick question: Have you tried to formally learn CSS?

I think you can get by with layouts on 80% knowledge from just tweaking things but to really be able to go start to finish on a frontend layout, I would suggest investing the hours to know things like what the difference is between a fixed, absolute and relative positioned element or the difference between padding and margin.

There are plenty of youtube series and the like, they just require the investment of time.

volandovengo··on Canada legalises recreational cannabis use
I would offer a contrarian perspective on this development: this isn't good for society.

While for sure we don't want people going to prison for smoking a joint - this also isn't necessarily good for society for corporations to promote recreational legal drugs. Was it a good thing for the tobacco and alcohol industries to basically run amuck in their advertising campaigns all over the world? Are we better as we world for it?

Better thoughts than my own are in this TED Talk on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klafHRlhNg4

volandovengo··on Wells Fargo Hit with $1B in Fines
I've interacted a lot with the larger banks and been flabbergasted at how they view the world.

Banks, big and small, regard the consumer operations of the bank as a cost center, which they should do as little as possible to maintain. In fact - I believe the only reason that they even have public facing consumer branches is largely to get access to capital as cheaply as possible. Every proposed improvement to the consumer experience is viewed in the light of "how is this going to make the bank more money." If a direct line from improving the customer experience to make more money can't be drawn, the bank won't do it.

Long gone are the days where banks provided a core function to the vast majority of society. They just exist to enrich themselves.

volandovengo··on Ask HN: Would you pay to have a penpal?
I’m sure somebody would pay.

Sure there may be proxy services out there that cater to these needs, but this isn’t to say that they can’t be improved.

Check out also the number of companies that are doing some version of digital therapy.

Would recommend reaching out to the people that are using other support channels and hearing their stories and thinking of ways to support them.

volandovengo··on Cuomo Declares a State of Emergency for the Subway
6 million people ride it every day.

Where are you getting your numbers from? Other countries build subways that are better and cheaper than they are in America.

volandovengo··on How to be like Steve Ballmer
Despite his public perception, he's incredibly intelligent. He has an IQ of 150.

His strategy of being a fast follower worked great for Microsoft when it had crappy competitors - it was ill equipped to deal with good ones like Apple and Google.

volandovengo··on TvOS for Developers
Anyone understand why they didn't launch this as a chromecast like USB stick vs. a standalone box?

Surely price point will be a big issue with adoption.

volandovengo··on Vancouver’s high-tech hurdle: Attracting top-level talent
The challenge facing vancouver is that the population can't afford to live there. While there may be a few tech companies in town, overall, the city doesn't have an industry.

Canadian visa policies got all kinds of foreigners investing big money into real estate in the city while not creating any actual jobs in the process.

So there isn't much of an economy supporting the city + thus a pretty small talent pool for any prospective startups to draw from...
