vincentpants··on Taking apart the 2010 Fisher Price re-released Music Box Record Player
Confirmed. Depending on pvc's point in it's lifecycle, it's either offgassing hydrogen chloride which turns into hydrochloric acid when inhaled, all the way to releasing dioxin when incinerated, and dioxin is considered the most congeners. You can get the same effect when burning your pcb. One of the deadliest fires in US history was the MGM Grand fire in Las Vegas and iirc all of the fatalities were due to the fumes from the burning pvc carpet and none were heat related.

vincentpants··on Biologists Rethink the Logic Behind Cells’ Molecular Signals
I’m not entirely convinced that the line between organism and ecosystem is that clear cut. I think you’re just expressing an observation at a different octave et al.
vincentpants··on HTTP Status 418 – I'm a teapot
Came to mention this. It really was a fantastic joke. May it rest in peace. pours one out
vincentpants··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
Co-founded our local Hackspace, the first Mini Makerfaire, pushed for many municipal computer parsable open data initiatives. Lobbied for additional bike lanes and bike parking in our downtown corridor. Optimizing resource management for North American manufacturing (pending & hopeful). Giving talks about how there will be no techno salvation as long as we live under the Leibensweise formed by a civilization driven by resource extraction (capitalism). Sending supplies to protestors at Fairy Creek, and above all am currently making bread and eating it. And it’s so far from enough. What are you doing?
vincentpants··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
NPR isn’t the source of our anxiety, it’s people that don’t listen or take this seriously that do, like you actually. If you’re not actively trying to fix this, then you are part of the problem.
vincentpants··on 9/11 changed architecture and urban design forever
This. The biggest changes were the rapid increase of nationalism and the low brow security theatre at our airports. Almost all security procedures and implementations were borrowed from Ireland and Israel’s learned lessons. I do think 9/11 added lots of stanchions, by an order of magnitude, but that doesn’t count as architecture imo. Sad to see fast company publish this.

Dannnnnnn the mannnnnnn! \o/

Edit to keep this comment from being completely useless: we can all thank Dan Bricklin for the spreadsheet.

Thank you!
vincentpants··on Strange domain names that developers bought
I used to own hairwaytosteven.org. Wish I did more with it. Such is life. Edit: copy pasta cleanup.

vincentpants··on Demand for air conditioning is set to surge by 2050
Huh what? Source?
vincentpants··on Going forward, Unity devs will need Unity Pro to publish on consoles
Sounds like this is specifically for the switch. Which I’m finding to be a great platform for indie devs IMO.
vincentpants··on Giraffes are as socially complex as elephants
“Advanced”. “Fairer”. (In massive air quotes) lol. Like the advanced and fair culture that is responsible for all the permafrost melt this year? I dunno man, I think it’s the inverse of that. I think all those that adopted Capitalism are at the bottom of those subjective lists you just mentioned.
vincentpants··on My Steam Game Revenue Stats
I know what Yerba Mate is, I’m even drinking some now! I even managed to start a Yerba Mate scene at my old work. And considering how many dev stations have gourds among their vinyl toy collection makes me think there were a bunch of Canadian video game developers googling Yerba Mate at some point. I imagine this game can do well with a little bit of niche online community spelunking. We’re out there!
vincentpants··on Giant tsunami from dino-killing asteroid impact revealed in fossilized ripples
This is a great reminder that not all heroes wear capes. Thank you for your service.
vincentpants··on Israeli Spyware Maker Is in Spotlight Amid Reports of Wide Abuses
I recently read that ancient Viking society’s focus on raiding and pillaging eventually produced a caste of incel males who were not strong enough to come back without any spoils from battle and thus were never considered attractive by both men and women. Is that what happened to you? What’s your excuse?
vincentpants··on Technology Traps (1978) [video]
Totally curious as to why you think so. I feel so lucky to have grown up watching connections. I even see the decline of this kind of education programming as the seasons progressed.
vincentpants··on ‘Dragon Man’ may be an elusive Denisovan
But it could! I’ve always suspected some form of domestication syndrome affecting our species. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestication_syndrome
vincentpants··on Yamaha MOTOROiD
Seconded, and thank you for pointing that out. Apologies for the terrible juju to everybody who read that. Nothing good comes out of outbursts like that, especially on the internet.
vincentpants··on Yamaha MOTOROiD
Homie, it has nothing to do with you or your work commute. Cyclists have every legal right to be on the road as a car and if a shoulder lane isn’t safe enough to cycle on then it’s safest and recommended and the law to take up a whole lane to ensure assholes like you don’t risk their safety/lives by trying to squeeze past them in the same lane. Best to just treat them as a car and try to practice patience.
vincentpants··on Parler social network sues Amazon for pulling support
They, along with trump and the rest of dissidents, deserve much much much worse. You can’t stage a coup and not expect repercussions.
vincentpants··on What killed Quayside, Sidewalk Labs’ ambitious smart city in Toronto?
The prospect of handing off city data to further product development for an American corporation to then sell it back to said Canadian city sounded and still sounds pretty dubious no? I mean we didn’t say no to smart cities, we just said no to alphabet. Great call imo.

vincentpants··on Polari: The Lost Language of Gay Men (2016)
First thought that came to mind was "Oh hey, I know almost all those words in the first list thanks to Monty Python!" My mind is blown.
vincentpants··on So You Want to Open a Small Press Bookstore/Artist-Run Space? A Cautionary Tale
Could it have been that the author's business/community structure could have affected its outcome? I found having a more horizontal do-ocracy, membership-driven community model. I'm convinced that was essential to helping persist a few orgs that I've participated in cofounding. This CCC document [1] really drove that philosophy home for a few of us up here in Vancouver, BC. Highly recommend the read!

That being said there is a lot of toxicity I've seen coming from other spaces. Noisebridge on Mission St. is the first to come to mind. That being said it's still around and kicking!

I'd love a 'coupon' to register for this site. This would be the perfect test bed for hosted node.js tools.
