vincentpants··on Who owns Express VPN, Nord, Surfshark? VPN relationships explained (2024)
Yes. Very much so. PIA was purchased by a British-Israeli corporation called Kape Inc. which has been a known bad-actor in the past and is a giant red flag when looking for VPN options. (edited away the brevity)

Also curious. Any mods or @dang: is there a reason why this was flagged?
vincentpants··on How malicious AI swarms can threaten democracy
Isn't the jury still out on that statement? Pretty sure we've been experiencing the long-tail cultural decomposition caused by the effects the industrial revolution brought with it with the exception of a 20 year opportunity to change our trajectory as a species. I think getting out of this conundrum alive will require de-segmenting our cultural narrative around how we got here.

edit: typos/grammar abound.

vincentpants··on How to disappear– Inside the world of extreme-privacy consultants
Do any of the sites he browses use cloudflare for DDoS protection? Does it use recaptcha to verify that he's human? Do the sites he browses have servers that are housed in a beligerent nation state? Did he use dns servers in a beligerent nation state? I feel like if the answer is yes to any of these might make most of this article moot.
vincentpants··on Withnail and I (2001)
This movie is absurdly good. And it seemed to leave a lasting mark for a while too. I love how the drug dealer in W&I got to play the same character and tell the same m&m's story in Wayne's World 2. "... and I beat the man with his own shoes..." chefs kiss
vincentpants··on Target suffers 10th consecutive week of foot traffic decline since caving on DEI
Yeah, it has been a reckoning. I’ve never seen liberal boomers and gen x-ers get so organized. I’ve only known the opposite in my lifetime. It’s been great to see and I’m here for it. Keep this up and you’ll turn the hosts of The View into leaders of an armed militia.

It actually was what I was wondering. Thank you @Dang!

Wow, it got to the top of the front page so fast! Weird!
vincentpants··on Tree Calculus
So wait. How is this not a lisp? And consider that a compliment, we need more lisp in our lives.
vincentpants··on Structured Outputs with Ollama
Wow neat! The first step to format ambivalence! Curious to see how well does this perform on the edge, our overhead is always so scarce!

Amazing work as always, looking forward to taking this for a spin!

vincentpants··on AAA Gaming on Asahi Linux
AFAIK the M3 is going to take a lot longer as the asahi team leverages apple silicon in their CI which means mac mini servers and the M3 generation never got their mac mini. Of all the generations to finally take the plunge into apple silicon, I had to choose the weird one... (typing this on an M3 mbair and not on linux sigh)

vincentpants··on Internet Archive: Security breach alert
Oh no! I didn't know their IPFS initiative didn't pan out. What happened to it? I am surprised how hard it is to google. I remember interviewing for a role on that team at the archive to help move it to filecoin. Was so happy to hear that the effort was underway to decentralize their datastore. We need this more than ever.

Curious what advantages this has over mosh?

vincentpants··on Does “building in public” work?
> If you follow enough indiehackers like me, Twitter/X will start recommending posts for you.

I think there's your first problem right there. I recommend seeking dev communities on more federated social networks. I have found there to be more support and less clout/lore building than on Twitter. And supportive communities ship products!

vincentpants··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
I just noticed my use of 'mostly' which unintentionally is doing more heavy lifting than it should. I was incorrect to use that word, but the point remains.
vincentpants··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
A lot of what I have been following is from here[1] and mentions: - "Today's attacks exposed many members at various levels. While the group says many of those injured are medical staff or administrative personnel and not fighters..." as well as - "Then we started seeing CCTV from inside shops and supermarkets of these small explosions targeting people doing their groceries or paying at the checkout.

Then for hours on end [we heard] the wail of sirens. The internal security forces were asking people to get off the streets because traffic was overwhelming the city."

And from my understanding of that region's geopolitics, isn't Hezbollah a political party? So this is like reading about a nation state blanket bombing targets that are of members of the Republican party right?

vincentpants··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
Weren't these people mostly emergency responders? Like doctors and EMTs? And yes, killed several, but also injured thousands? I'm a little concerned by the vocabulary used in the op title.

Listening to an AI generated discussion-based podcast on the topic of anticipating the scraping of deceased people's digital footprint to create an AI copy of your loved one makes the cells that make up my body want to give up on fighting entropy.

Linking a previous hn discussion regarding the flourishing lcd casio watch mod scene. They stuff these cheap watches full of sensors, stm32 micro-controllers, screenmods & everything. It's great stuff.

How the hell is True North even on here??! They are an Alex Jones-level conservative crisis actor resource that doesn't have the best track record of being accurate. Is there a better link out there? Flagging this post in the meantime...
